Chapter 7: The Turbid Mortal World

After Hu Mei’er departed during that long cold night, Lu Yun had no choice but to carry the infant back to the kang to sleep. But he had barely lain down for a short while when footsteps sounded behind him. Lu Yun hurriedly turned around, only to see a fierce woman standing beside the kang, glaring at him with a face full of anger.

Seeing Hu Mei’er return unexpectedly, Lu Yun couldn’t help but feel puzzled and quickly asked, “Did you forget something?” Upon seeing his sighing and dejected appearance, anger flared in Hu Mei’er’s heart. She immediately swung her whisk and shrieked, “I forgot to take your dog life!” In her fury, she wildly swung the whisk in all directions with a most vicious manner, frightening the infant into crying again.

Lu Yun panicked, “You… what exactly do you want to do? Didn’t I already give you the jade seal?” Hu Mei’er cast a sideways glance at Lu Yun and said viciously, “Go die.” With that, she extended her hand coldly and said, “Give me the child.” In his bewilderment, Lu Yun didn’t know what she intended. Hu Mei’er scolded delicately, “Give him to me!”

After pondering for a long moment, Lu Yun handed over the infant, though he secretly remained alert in his heart. Hu Mei’er snorted, kissed the child’s cheek, and said:

“Good baby, don’t sleep with the stinking man. Sleep with mama – mama is fragrant.” With that, she cradled the infant and returned to the kang herself. After receiving her gentle care, the infant seemed very comfortable and actually closed his eyes, falling asleep on his own.

Lu Yun sat on the cold ground, feeling utterly dumbfounded, not knowing whether this woman had gone mad or foolish. In his stupefaction, he also lay down on the ground and fell into a deep sleep in no time.

The next day, just as dawn broke, Lu Yun suddenly received a kick from behind. Greatly startled, he quickly grabbed his long sword and looked back, shocked to discover that Hu Mei’er had already awakened and was holding her whisk, glaring at him viciously. Lu Yun exclaimed in alarm, “You… what do you want to do?” Hu Mei’er said coldly, “Miss is hungry – why aren’t you going to cook breakfast?”

Lu Yun looked completely horrified, not knowing what this woman’s intentions were, and said in panic, “Aren’t you returning to Beijing? Isn’t Lord Jiang waiting to use the jade seal? Why aren’t you leaving?” Hu Mei’er sneered, “I’ll leave when I want to leave and stay when I want to stay – what right do you have to control me?” Seeing Lu Yun gaping with his mouth open, staring at her in confusion, she couldn’t help but blush and spat, “Hurry up and cook! Catch rabbits! Otherwise I’ll slaughter you for food!” Lu Yun didn’t dare disobey and went to pick some wild fruits and mushrooms as he had done the previous evening.

Watching Lu Yun hurry back carrying plain fruits, Hu Mei’er scolded, “Why do I only see fruits and no meat? You’re being lazy!” Lu Yun coughed, “Don’t keep getting angry. The rain has stopped outside – if we light a fire, our tracks will be exposed. If you want to eat meat, I’ll go hunting again tonight.”

Hu Mei’er’s face reddened as she thought, “A thirty-year-old woman struggling with a baby – I’ve roamed the jianghu for ten years yet I’m still inferior to this bookworm.” She didn’t know that Lu Yun was well-versed in military affairs and could participate in strategic planning even on battlefields, so these trivial jianghu matters naturally couldn’t stump him. She grunted and handed the infant back to Lu Yun for feeding.

Lu Yun chewed the fruit flesh and then fed it into the child’s mouth. Hu Mei’er squatted nearby, staring in a daze, unconsciously letting a smile creep across her lips. After watching for a while, she suddenly asked, “Lu Yun, this child has no blood relation to you – why do you treat him so well?”

Lu Yun smiled slightly, “I also have no blood relation to you, Miss – why did you step in to save me?” Hu Mei’er cupped her face in both hands and shook her head, “I don’t know either. I just pulled you away without thinking much – probably felt that someone like you shouldn’t die.”

Lu Yun smiled faintly, “Miss Hu, my feelings are the same.” Hu Mei’er murmured, “You also feel he shouldn’t die?” Lu Yun didn’t respond, only offered her the fruit, asking, “Would you like to feed him?” Hu Mei’er made a surprised sound and took the fruit. After thinking for a long while, she shook her head and handed the fruit flesh back.

After both had eaten breakfast and rested briefly, Hu Mei’er picked up her silver needles to play with them and asked, “Surname Lu, now that you’re carrying this child and fleeing everywhere, have you thought about how to settle down in the future?”

Hearing the words “settle down,” Lu Yun couldn’t help but smile bitterly. Initially, he had left the capital only to join Nu Cang and then make further plans, but who knew that sudden changes would force him to flee the mountain in panic – this was truly unexpected. Now he couldn’t return to Beijing, couldn’t join Nu Cang, and his hometown was thousands of miles away. In this vast world, he was alone once again. A sense of loneliness flew into his heart, and Lu Yun’s eyes showed a bewildered expression, not knowing how to respond. After a long while, Hu Mei’er asked again, “Lu Yun, do you really want to go home?”

Lu Yun covered his face with his hands but didn’t answer Hu Mei’er’s question. He slowly took out a cloth bundle from his waist, unwrapped it, and gently caressed the embroidered silk inside. Seeing his unusual behavior, Hu Mei’er couldn’t help but laugh, “Thinking of your fiancée?”

Lu Yun exclaimed, “You… you know about her too?” Hu Mei’er smiled, “Minister Gu sent out wedding invitations widely – it would be hard for Miss not to know.” Reflecting on the imminent wedding that was just a month ago, it now seemed like a lifetime had passed. Lu Yun sighed and said in a low voice, “I was supposed to marry during the Mid-Autumn Festival, but if not for this sudden catastrophe, I would already be wed by now.”

Seeing his sorrowful expression, Hu Mei’er suddenly said, “Lu Yun, if you have nowhere to go, could you help me drive a carriage?” Lu Yun asked curiously, “Drive a carriage?” Hu Mei’er smiled mysteriously, “My aunt is turning seventy at year’s end. Miss has always been filial, so I must hurry home to visit her in the next few days. I’m worried about finding a carriage driver – if you can’t find anywhere to go, you might as well come along.”

Lu Yun was utterly amazed and asked in confusion, “But… someone like you also has an aunt?”

Hu Mei’er flew into a rage and shouted, “What kind of talk is that? Wasn’t I born from a mother? Can’t my mother have sisters? Spouting nonsense and annoying people? Go die!” Cold light flashed as a silver needle flew out, embedding itself beside Lu Yun’s cheek again. Lu Yun touched his cheek in terror, “Don’t throw any more – if you keep throwing these silver needles, I’m afraid there won’t be any left.” Hu Mei’er angrily demanded, “Are you coming or not? I’m leaving in the next couple of days!”

Hearing her determination, Lu Yun was both shocked and delighted, realizing she intended to accompany him in his flight. He quickly asked, “You… where is your hometown?” Hu Mei’er wore a proud expression, “Miss was born in Guizhou – ‘no three days without rain, no three li of flat land’ – only such a place could nurture an outstanding person like Hu Mei’er.” She patted the small infant and laughed, “My hometown has several unmarried sisters. This child has no father or mother, and you, a grown man, can’t raise him properly – he could be adopted by them as a son.”

Lu Yun stared in amazement, “You… you also have sisters?” Hu Mei’er roared angrily, “What kind of demonic talk is this? Don’t I have parents? Can’t my parents have daughters? Why can’t I have sisters!” Cold light flashed as the silver needle was about to fly out, but suddenly remembering that she had few hidden weapons left, she forcibly restrained herself and shouted, “Are you coming or not? Quickly give me a straight answer! If not, I’ll leave by myself!” Lu Yun was actually already overjoyed and quickly said, “This is natural – Miss saved Lu’s life. I should naturally drive your carriage and serve diligently to repay you.” He was full of hope – if this child could find a place to settle, he would have fulfilled his duty to Liu Angtian and could return to the capital to find his beloved. Filled with gratitude, he immediately began packing, unable to wait even a moment.

After the two discussed their itinerary, they no longer delayed. After slight disguises, they headed south, preparing to travel toward Guizhou Province. However, upon passing Tianshui City, they saw the sun-moon flags of imperial commissioners. Knowing the court was still pursuing them, they dared not enter Tianshui and instead traveled along desolate countryside. By evening, having traveled a hundred li, they found a remote county town, preparing to enter and buy a carriage.

Located in the northwestern desert with few inhabitants, and with winter approaching, the streets were even more desolate. Although a great war was imminent, there was no sign of panic in the air. The two walked nervously past a government office, only to see the main gate tightly closed with no officials or guards stationed – completely unlike the tense atmosphere in Tianshui. Lu Yun looked around and surprisingly saw no court sun-moon flags, wondering, “What’s going on here? Has the county magistrate not yet taken office?” Hu Mei’er was equally puzzled. She came to the government notice board and looked, only to see the board completely empty without a single official document in sight. Lu Yun didn’t see his own name on any wanted posters and naturally breathed a great sigh of relief.

But Hu Mei’er’s expression seemed somewhat strange. She stared at the notice board and said in a low voice, “Looking at this situation, perhaps my not returning to Beijing was correct.” Lu Yun asked curiously, “What do you mean by that?” Hu Mei’er shook her head and said mysteriously, “Maybe there’s been a dynastic change.”

Lu Yun exclaimed, “Dynastic change?” At the time he was at Damo Academy, he had heard Qin Zhonghai mention this matter – it seemed that once the prophecy “dragon spits pearls at the Golden Water Bridge” was spoken, the situation in the realm would change. Filled with alarm, he thought of the court troops surrounding Nu Cang and couldn’t help but worry. Although he was no longer aligned with Qin Zhonghai, old feelings ran deep – how could he completely forget? He quickly asked, “Miss Hu, what’s the current situation with the court forces surrounding Nu Cang?” Hu Mei’er sneered, “You still have time to worry about others? Men like Qin Zhonghai and Hao Zhenxiang deserve to die.”

Hearing these words, Lu Yun didn’t know how to respond and just lowered his head in silence. He sighed and asked again, “Miss Hu, was that Sa Mau sent by Jiang Chong?” Hu Mei’er shook her head, “That’s not the case. Lord Jiang’s situation is precarious – men like Gao Tianjiang and Sa Mau were recruited by the emperor long ago and are now all under direct imperial commissioner control.” Lu Yun had heard about Jiang Chong’s loss of power before joining Nu Cang, so he wasn’t surprised now. He grunted and asked, “If they’re all under imperial commissioner control, what about you?”

Hu Mei’er spat, “With Chen Luoshan’s meager abilities, he thinks he can command the Hundred Flowers Fairy? I tell you, Miss doesn’t eat the court’s rice and won’t starve anyway – wanting me to be their slave, not a chance!” Her cursing was fierce, and seeing passersby looking at her, Hu Mei’er turned away and said in a low voice, “Forget it, don’t worry about these ministers and nobles – the situation is too chaotic, nobody knows what tomorrow will bring. Let’s preserve ourselves first. Let’s hurry and go.”

The two bought a carriage and horses and traveled south urgently for over ten days. During this time, Hu Mei’er never mentioned returning to Beijing again, and the three traveled like a family of three, only heading down the road. However, calculating the distance from Shaanxi-Gansu to Guizhou, the journey was still extremely long – even traveling a hundred li daily, reaching Zunyi would probably take more than a month.

Speaking of which, Hu Mei’er was a major general of the Jiang faction, while Lu Yun was one of the Four Young Masters of the Liu school. Who would have thought that the dramatic changes in the world’s situation would cause these mortal enemies to travel south together in shared exile – truly an incomprehensible strange affair. However, Lu Yun didn’t know that Hu Mei’er’s abandonment of Beijing’s wealth and honor wasn’t solely due to the court’s chaotic situation. She had her own thoughts in her heart, but since it wasn’t the final moment, it wasn’t convenient to speak.

When the carriage entered Hanzhong, it was already late October. To cross through all of Sichuan Province would require another ten-plus days. However, the roads were becoming increasingly cold and difficult to travel. Sure enough, that night heavy snow fell – this harsh winter had come quite early. In the middle of the night, the two found the roads dark and truly couldn’t distinguish east from west, north from south, so they found a desolate area to rest and discuss future plans.

The two built a fire for warmth. In the remote mountains with no human traces, they also didn’t fear being spotted by pursuers. Watching the snowflakes fall and the firelight reflecting, Hu Mei’er wrapped herself in a blanket and was about to sleep when she suddenly saw Lu Yun take out a book from his traveling bag and place it by the fire to warm. Hu Mei’er scolded, “Again with this fake thing – what exactly is this?” Lu Yun didn’t respond, only used dry branches to kindle fire and gently roasted the book from below with the flame. The book, warmed by the fire, immediately glowed brilliantly, with the ancient tome emitting phosphorescent light. Hu Mei’er was completely amazed and said tremblingly, “This… this seems like a night pearl…”

Lu Yun smiled, “To be honest with Miss, the Kunlun sword techniques I used that day were learned from this book.”

Hu Mei’er was speechless with amazement. Night pearls were circular phosphorescent stones that absorbed sunlight during the day and emitted heat and light at night. If thrown into hot water and boiled, they could produce dazzling light. It seemed this book was painstakingly written with phosphorescent powder. Lu Yun opened the book and spread it before Hu Mei’er, saying gently, “Come, let’s look at it together.” Hu Mei’er was startled, “You… you really want me to look at it with you?”

Lu Yun smiled, “Miss Hu, although Lu Yun is poor and scholarly, he’s not petty – why should you feel like an outsider?”

Hu Mei’er’s heart was deeply moved. Martial arts practitioners jealously guarded their secrets – who didn’t hide their skills? The more advanced the martial arts, the more deeply hidden in the heart. Even between father and son, master and disciple in traditional lineages, a few ultimate techniques were often kept in reserve. Who knew Lu Yun would be so generous, not treating her as an outsider? Hu Mei’er giggled a few times, thinking, “Rarely do I meet such a madman – I won’t be polite either.”

The two examined it carefully and saw this book contained about a hundred pages. The cover bore ancient seal script reading “Ancient Sword God Manual,” with regular script annotation: “Kunlun sword emerges, blood flows across oceans, driving straight for a thousand li to the Yellow River’s yellow waters.” It seemed this book was no longer the earliest manual and likely contained additions and revisions by Zhuo Lingzhao. Lu Yun casually flipped through it, seeing page after page depicting male figures with meridians and acupoints completely detailed. Hu Mei’er looked with amazement, recalling Zhuo Lingzhao’s martial arts and nodding, “This is indeed Kunlun sword techniques without doubt.”

Kunlun was famous throughout the world for swordsmanship, and Zhuo Lingzhao called himself “Sword God,” renowned for his “Sword Radiance” ultimate technique. Beyond this, Kunlun had twelve major and minor sets of techniques passed down to disciples, called “Sword Cold,” “Sword Gu,” “Sword Shadow,” “Sword Wave,” “Sword Leopard,” “Sword Python,” and others. The two spent nearly half a night hastily viewing and repeatedly comparing, finding that the sword techniques recorded in the book were indeed profound and comprehensive, with all twelve sword technique sets complete. Kunlun sword techniques were imposing and magnificent, greatly different from Huashan’s agility and unlike Jiuhua’s gentleness – they could be considered rare and miraculous martial arts under heaven. Lu Yun sighed inwardly:

“Zhuo Lingzhao was a generation’s hero with outstanding martial arts – it’s just a pity he used them for evil.”

Hu Mei’er herself was also a great villain, so she didn’t care about good and evil, just humming and hawing evasively. Taking advantage of his distraction while talking, she desperately tried to memorize the techniques. However, she could barely manage to remember the earlier chapters of “Sword Flight” and “Sword Dance” through mental effort. When it came to the superior sword techniques like “Sword Cold” and “Sword Gu,” her eyes only saw meridian diagrams and lines with no real sword moves visible, making her eyes swim with confusion. She flipped back and forth but saw no introductory basic skills or internal energy methods. With a cry, she stamped her foot, “These techniques are too difficult – my internal energy foundation is limited, I’m afraid I can’t learn them all.”

The Hundred Flowers Fairy’s specialties were only poison arts, hidden weapons, and the three great poison techniques of the whisk. Her internal energy and physical combat were quite mediocre. The superior Kunlun sword techniques were extremely precise and required coordinated internal energy support. Unfortunately, she hadn’t practiced superior mental methods, so learning would naturally be extremely difficult.

Lu Yun pondered for a long while, “If your internal energy is insufficient, you might as well practice my self-created ‘Limitless Heart Method’ in the future – perhaps it would work.” Hearing this was his self-created martial art, Hu Mei’er couldn’t help but say awkwardly, “Limitless Heart Method? The name sounds terrible – I don’t want to practice it.”

Lu Yun smiled bitterly and raised his palm in a void chop. Palm wind whooshed out, instantly extinguishing the fire. Seeing his palm power had unique secrets, Hu Mei’er was both surprised and delighted, changing her tune immediately, “The Limitless Heart Method – what a wonderful name! Teacher Lu, quickly teach me!”

Lu Yun became serious, putting on a very stern manner, “First prepare tuition, second prepare proper etiquette, third let me see your aptitude.”

Lu Yun was extraordinarily talented – his brush could produce world-shaking articles, and his intelligence and comprehension far exceeded ordinary people by a hundredfold. During his bitter studies in the Yangzhou study, with Lu Guzhan’s guidance from the side, he actually comprehended a set of mental methods from the health cultivation books that the Wudang sect leader Yuan Qing had given to Gu Siyuan. Although not as precise as Heavenly Judgment or as powerful as Fire Greed internal energy, in terms of delicate subtlety, it was quite unique like Wudang mental methods. If using the “Limitless Heart Method” as a foundation combined with Kunlun’s twelve sword techniques, martial arts would surely improve dramatically.

Hu Mei’er had originally thought Lu Yun was just a foolish bookworm with naturally limited martial arts, but unexpectedly he had this ace in the hole. She quickly said, “Whether I practice or not doesn’t matter, but you should diligently train these days – if we encounter pursuers, cramming at the last minute is still better than being slaughtered.” Lu Yun thought of Sa Mau, Gao Tianjiang and others’ martial arts and continuously agreed.

Guizhou was over 7,600 li from Beijing and 4,200 li from Nanjing – quite a distant journey. Since they carried the jade seal and the child’s identity was quite special, they were extra careful on the road, only camping outdoors at night and never driving the carriage into cities. Even when buying food and supplies, Hu Mei’er mostly disguised herself to enter cities, never taking risks. The situation was too tense – although Lu Yun wrote home twice during the journey, he couldn’t find anyone to deliver the letters. Only after settling the child could he personally return to the capital to see Gu Qianxi again.

After spending many days together traveling in the carriage, the two gradually became less formal with each other. When the mood struck, Hu Mei’er would speak of her hometown, and only then did they learn this demonness wasn’t a Han Chinese woman but a Miao woman from the borderlands. Lu Yun wasn’t surprised – Guizhou was a barbarous region with seventy-six “Chief Official Departments” under Pacification Commissioner supervision. Since Hu Mei’er was from Guizhou with a voice both sweet and soft, she had always seemed very much like a Miao woman from her accent. Hearing her admit her background, he felt no surprise.

Whenever Lu Yun had free time on the road, he practiced swordsmanship diligently. Facing great danger with barely enough ability to protect himself, he naturally should train martial arts to strengthen his body. Lu Yun threw himself into bitter training, studying the twelve sword techniques like examining articles. These past few years he had been taking exams and serving as an official, somewhat neglecting martial arts. Compared to Wu Dingyuan, Qin Zhonghai, Yang Suguan and others, he was naturally inferior. But fortunately, he had obtained this “Sword Manual” and truly had a master’s guidance – his swordsmanship naturally improved by leaps and bounds daily. Hu Mei’er often accompanied him in practicing moves when she had nothing to do, and sometimes when Lu Yun was free, he would also guide her in some internal energy breathing methods. However, such qi cultivation and meditation couldn’t be rushed and couldn’t be accomplished in a day, especially since Lu Yun’s internal energy belonged to the Daoist school. Formulas like “forget self and have no mind” and “maintain intention but not thoughts” required settled nature and patience, which greatly conflicted with Hu Mei’er’s hot-tempered and willful personality. It seemed she would slowly practice and surely gain understanding in the future.

Traveling farther and farther, they gradually reached central Sichuan. That night they came to the Chengdu area and again rested in the wilderness. The weather was cold with a roaring campfire. Hu Mei’er sat by the fire resting when she saw Lu Yun execute a “Sword Leopard” move, internal energy flowing through “Cloud Dream Marsh,” radiance flashing, executing thirteen swords in succession in an instant. Under the firelight’s reflection, it was like a fiery tree with silver flowers, immediately making Hu Mei’er pale with shock.

Hu Mei’er was secretly amazed. She had thought that with Lu Yun hastily learning techniques, cramming at the last minute, and having no master nearby for guidance, his progress would surely be limited. Who knew this person’s comprehension was so startling – relying on this book’s guidance, his martial arts had undergone earth-shaking transformation. She felt quite horrified and clicked her tongue, “If I fought you now, I’m afraid I couldn’t beat you.”

Lu Yun smiled, “This Sword Leopard is actually not difficult to practice – wrist strength is secondary, the key is only how your whole body exerts force.” Hu Mei’er said delightedly, “Not difficult? Then can you teach me?”

Lu Yun nodded with a smile, handed over the long sword, and stood beside Hu Mei’er to demonstrate, “Now focus your mind in the dantian, draw in your chest and pull up your back, lean your body slightly backward, bend your left leg and straighten your right foot, internally rotate your right palm moving from front upward, extend your left hand in sword gesture swinging your arm behind…”

Hu Mei’er’s ears itched as she listened and said frantically, “Slower, slower – one thing at a time.” She followed suit, assuming the stance that Mo Lingshan once used, and asked, “What next?” Lu Yun continued, “Next comes the wrist work – the wrist follows the metal four paths, advancing once, retreating three, advancing twice like five, moving like this…” He demonstrated his wrist shaking up and down, turning left and bending right like a spirit snake winding around, “First memorize the formula, then the sword moves – have you remembered?”

Hu Mei’er heard such rigorous steps and couldn’t help but panic, clicking her tongue, “How can anyone remember so many steps and hand gestures?” She had always practiced eyesight, throwing flying needles, and using the whisk through bitter training plus master-transmitted ingenious mechanisms to roam the jianghu. Who knew that the first time practicing swords she’d encounter such a complex set of scholarly formulas? Lu Yun gripped her right wrist and said by her ear, “Kunlun’s pride over the world relies on these many special methods. Once you learn them completely, even if you encounter thieves like Sa Mau in the future, you’ll have means of resistance.”

Hu Mei’er heard his serious tone, as if teaching a disciple, and couldn’t help but feel moved. At this moment, Lu Yun was pressed close behind her, their bodies leaning against each other. Hu Mei’er felt his chest was broad and quite warm. She leaned her snow-white neck back and called sweetly, “Master.” Then she covered her mouth corner and giggled.

Lu Yun frowned, “Practicing martial arts requires focused determination – don’t speak and move casually.” He reached out to support Hu Mei’er’s slender waist and said seriously, “Your wrist strength is insufficient – you need to draw in chest and pull up back to borrow waist power.” He released Hu Mei’er, walked in front of her, and demonstrated wrist winding and turning again, “This is the metal four paths. Sword Leopard also has wood three paths, earth five paths, water two paths, and other five sets. Adding two by two, three by three creates different moves. If you complete all five paths of metal, wood, water, fire, earth sword moves in one breath, you can achieve sixty-four swords. When Zhuo Lingzhao dueled Ning Bufan, he used this move to shock the world – I was watching from the side…”

He chattered on extensively. Looking back at Hu Mei’er, he saw this demonness had already put down the long sword, smiling at the mouth corners, only gazing at him intently. Lu Yun asked, “Have you memorized the metal four paths?” Hu Mei’er handed the sword hilt back to Lu Yun and smiled, “I’m stupid and can’t remember it all – demonstrate it once more for me to see.”

When had the always proud and fierce Hu Mei’er ever admitted to being foolish? Lu Yun shook his head, not knowing why she had changed her nature, and took the sword hilt himself. Fast sword in hand, swishing sounds connected as Sword Leopard’s radiance shone, quick as lightning, quite resembling Mo Lingshan’s former style. It seemed his power had deepened – perhaps he could catch up to Zhuo Lingzhao. Lu Yun was about to hand the sword hilt to Hu Mei’er when he saw this woman had already sat back in the carriage, smiling happily as she playfully teased the infant.

Lu Yun walked over in confusion, “What’s wrong with you? Not practicing anymore?” Hu Mei’er seemed tired and completely uninterested. She smiled as she gazed at the infant, and after a long while suddenly said, “Lu Yun, this child has never had a name – let’s give him one.”

This infant was Liu Angtian’s young master. According to custom, he should be named at the full-month celebration feast, but due to sudden disasters and everyone’s wandering hardships, they had never given him a name. Lu Yun pondered for a long while, his mind flashing through countless names both literary and martial, sacred and wise. Just as he was about to list them one by one, he suddenly heard the infant sneeze “ah-choo.” Hu Mei’er clapped her hands and laughed, “A-sniffle! A-sniffle! We’ll call you A-Xiu!”

Hearing “A-Xiu,” the infant immediately sneezed “ah-choo” several more times, his face covered in snot, as if responding. Lu Yun’s mind full of mathematical calculations, wise sayings, astronomy and geography couldn’t compare to a single sneeze. He could only smile bitterly, “Fine then, A-Xiu it is – though it’s a bit too delicate.” Hu Mei’er laughed, “Do you know what Yang Suguan’s childhood name was? It was Guan-Guan – now that’s even more delicate.”

Lu Yun recalled past events in the capital and couldn’t help but sigh, nodding, “I’ll give this child another character – ‘Divine.’ His circumstances have been perilous, yet he’s always turned danger into safety as if divinely aided. From now on we’ll call him Divine Xiu.” Hu Mei’er said happily, “Divine Xiu – Liu Divine Xiu – that’s not a bad name.” She said to the infant, “Divine Xiu, Aunt Hu is calling you.”

The infant looked at Hu Mei’er with a blank expression, opened his little mouth “ah-ah,” yawned, and went to sleep on his own. Hu Mei’er laughed, “This child is so lazy – was Grand Commander Liu like this as a child?” She laughed and jumped down from the carriage, looking quite joyful as she said to Lu Yun, “Teacher Lu, Master Lu, have you finished practicing your sword techniques?”

Hearing her address him as “Teacher Lu,” Lu Yun suddenly felt invigorated. His childhood ambition had been to hold a teaching rod and severely discipline bad children. Thinking of this, he suddenly became quite solemn, picked up the long sword like a teaching rod and waved it, “Kunlun sword techniques are profound and extensive – merely mastering the small Sword Leopard, how can I claim complete mastery?”

Hu Mei’er was familiar with Zhuo Lingzhao and had contributed to everyone’s joint ambush of the Sword God. She grunted, “Zhuo Lingzhao ranked among the four great masters – his martial arts are indeed more than just this.”

Lu Yun lit a fire fold and illuminated the last few pages of the book, “To truly master Zhuo Lingzhao’s martial arts essence, one must decode this scripture.”

Hu Mei’er leaned in to look and saw the book’s last page covered with text. She read aloud in a low voice: “Hate, resentment, sorrow, suffering, loathing, anger, rage, benevolence, love, compassion, filial piety, shame, righteousness, integrity…” This text was extremely difficult and awkward to read – Hu Mei’er had to read it twice to get it smooth. She caught her breath and continued reading: “Therefore, those who hate others thereby gain benevolence; those without love must not resent; those without compassion must not sorrow; after filial piety comes suffering; loathing brings shame; righteousness generates anger; integrity creates rage in the human heart. Embrace heaven and earth’s seven great sufferings, break through human emotion’s seven great obstacles, thus abandon the heart of good and evil to be called Sword God.”

Hu Mei’er looked completely confused and hurriedly shook Lu Yun’s arm, “What does this mean? It seems like an essay.” Lu Yun sighed, “This is a morality text – it wants people to abandon the distinction between good and evil, forget the seven great sorrows to become Sword God.” Hu Mei’er asked blankly, “Isn’t sword practice just taking a treasured sword and swinging it around to slash? Why are there so many complications?”

Lu Yun turned to the next page and sighed, “See for yourself.” Hu Mei’er looked down and was even more startled to see the next page depicting a human figure with chest thrust out and belly protruding, seven straight rays of light emanating from the dantian. That luminous energy didn’t follow meridian pathways but radiated throughout the body like sunlight. Hu Mei’er saw some text beside it and tried to read, but found the words even more awkward and difficult than the previous passage. She couldn’t help but stare speechlessly in panic, “What is this thing again?”

Lu Yun said in a low voice, “Do you remember Zhuo Lingzhao’s ultimate technique?” Hu Mei’er recalled the great battle at Mount Hua and couldn’t help but exclaim with shock and delight, “You mean Sword Radiance?”

Lu Yun opened the manual and pointed to the mental method above, “This Sword Radiance is an invisible blade of light forced out by the swordsman’s internal energy. When the radiance emerges, it’s brilliantly dazzling. Zhuo Lingzhao liked to smear phosphorus powder on his sword, intending to show off his power even more. However, Sword Radiance doesn’t just require channeling internal energy into the weapon – it must be condensed into tangible, substantial energy force, but I don’t know how it’s accomplished.”

Hu Mei’er looked at the densely packed mental method, thinking it must be the key to mastering that supreme sword energy. She couldn’t help but laugh, “Aren’t you very clever? Just look at it a few more times and you’ll get it.” Lu Yun shook his head, “I’ve been following the diagrams and practicing diligently these past days, but haven’t made the slightest progress – I don’t know why.”

Hu Mei’er laughed, “Zhuo Lingzhao was a bad person, but you’re a good person. Maybe you also need to become as bad as Zhuo Lingzhao to master Sword Radiance.” Lu Yun smiled bitterly, “That would be quite difficult. Even after two more reincarnations it would be hard.” Although Lu Yun was intelligent and perceptive, after reading the scripture several times, he still couldn’t comprehend it thoroughly. Hu Mei’er beside him helped by randomly offering suggestions, but they weren’t much help either.

Entering Hanzhong, crossing Sichuan, the great carriage climbed mountains and crossed ridges, finally arriving at the last stop – Guizhou – amid countless wonders.

By this time it was early November. After entering Guizhou, Lu Yun relied on Hu Mei’er’s guidance to head straight for Zunyi. Having left home at a young age, although Hu Mei’er wasn’t exactly returning home in glory, she carried thousands of silver taels and wasn’t too shabby. Missing the people and affairs of home, she seemed to have the timidity of one nearing their hometown. Seeing her expression, Lu Yun drove the carriage slowly these past days, not urging haste.

That evening, following directions, they came to a mountain valley. Though winter weather should have been quite cold, there was faintly warm air by the valley, and no frost or snow was visible on the ground – there must be geothermal sulfur springs.

Seeing birds chirping all around and green tree tops, the two relaxed and stopped the carriage to rest. Lu Yun heard the babbling of flowing water and followed the sound, passing through clusters of flowers and trees. Suddenly he heard Hu Mei’er call out, “Be careful! Don’t walk any further!” Lu Yun was startled and looked down to see a ten-thousand-foot abyss at his feet, about a hundred zhang distance from the opposite shore. Looking into that deep gorge, he saw turbulent water flow with surging waves – that swift deep water had carved through the earth, surging onward, but he didn’t know where it ended.

Hu Mei’er came over carrying the child, “This is the White Water River – sometimes it flows on the surface, sometimes it burrows underground. There are many blind monster fish in the river – don’t go down there for no reason.” Hearing this was an underground river, Lu Yun clicked his tongue and quickly said, “Miss, rest assured – even if I wanted to die, I wouldn’t choose such a terrifying place.”

Hu Mei’er smiled slightly, “That’s a pity. It’s said the end of this river is the entrance to hell. The women of our hometown jump in there whenever they’re treated poorly by heartless men.” Lu Yun’s heart jumped in alarm. Just as he was about to speak, Hu Mei’er already laughed, “Let’s go quickly – only a few dozen li left, and my aunt is still waiting for me to return for her birthday celebration.” Lu Yun exclaimed in surprise, “You really have an aunt?”

Hu Mei’er made a face and pretended to shoot a needle. Lu Yun was startled and quickly lowered his head to get in the carriage, not daring to speak further.

With winter evening glow accompanied by rare warm wind, the infant slept peacefully as the two drove forward, both feeling intoxicated. Seeing Hu Mei’er’s hometown before their eyes, the carriage was warm with thick quilts, drinking water and food all complete. With beautiful scenery before them, even the demonness Hu Mei’er appeared refined and cultured, reclining leisurely in the carriage while occasionally tending to the child. Lu Yun suddenly felt warmth in his heart and blurted out, “Miss Hu, what is your honored age this year?”

Women over twenty-five most hated others asking their age. Sure enough, Hu Mei’er’s pretty face showed slight annoyance with no intention of responding. Lu Yun quickly said, “I meant no disrespect – I only asked because we’ve shared hardships together.” Hu Mei’er snorted, “You tell me your age first.” Lu Yun counted on his fingers, “I was born in the first month – after New Year I should be thirty-two or thirty-three.”

Hu Mei’er’s eyebrows brightened with joy, “I happen to be the same age as you, just one month younger.” Lu Yun quickly said, “Sorry, sorry – I was confused. I was born in the Hai year, so I miscounted by one year.” Hu Mei’er’s face lost color as she said frantically, “I… I also miscounted…” Lu Yun made a curious sound, “Miss, what exactly is your age?” Hu Mei’er’s face reddened as she said softly, “One month younger than you.” She picked up her whisk and waved it randomly. After a while, she suddenly sighed softly, “Year after year – it’s truly maddening.”

In the past, Hu Mei’er had been imposing and domineering, beating or killing anyone she met – where was there any sign of distress? Seeing her dazed expression, Lu Yun couldn’t help but be curious and asked, “Miss, what are you worried about?”

Hu Mei’er suddenly blushed and turned her head away, appearing somewhat shy. Lu Yun asked again, “Miss, if you have worries, feel free to tell me – perhaps I can help.” Hu Mei’er lowered her head, picking at the steel spikes in her whisk, and said quietly, “Lu Yun, have you… have you ever thought of taking a concubine?” Lu Yun frowned, “I’m not yet married and live alone – where would I get a concubine?”

Hu Mei’er made an acknowledging sound. Supporting her forehead with her hand against the cold mist and wind, she asked again, “I’m talking about the future – they say high officials like to take concubines. After you marry Miss Gu, when your heart itches, you’ll take another wife, won’t you?”

The road was bumpy and Lu Yun concentrated on driving, casually answering, “I only have seventh-rank status – I’m not a high official.” Hu Mei’er said, “Then… then if you were already a first-rank minister with vast wealth, would you take concubines?” Lu Yun didn’t turn his head, saying flatly, “Absurd – I’ll never have vast wealth in this lifetime.”

Hu Mei’er became angry and punched his back hard, saying hatefully, “Damn it! I’m asking you a question and you’re being evasive about what? Answer! Have you ever thought of taking concubines?” In her fury, she even used coarse language, completely disregarding her lady’s dignity. Although Hu Mei’er’s palm power wasn’t necessarily powerful, as a martial artist her hand strength was considerable – this punch made Lu Yun’s back numb. If not for his solid internal energy foundation, he might have fallen from the carriage long ago.

Lu Yun reached back to rub his back and looked at Hu Mei’er in panic, “Whether I take concubines or not, what business is it of yours, Miss? Why did you hit me like that?”

Hearing these words, Hu Mei’er suddenly snorted and closed the carriage curtain. Lu Yun endured the pain and lifted the curtain, frowning, “What’s wrong with you now?” Suddenly cold light flashed as another silver needle shot over. Lu Yun quickly turned his head aside, nearly getting wounded. Cold sweat streamed down as he thought, “Indeed, ‘only petty people and women are difficult to nurture’ – these words are truly correct.”

Lu Yun frowned and shook his head, wanting to scold her, but on second thought, he had unintentionally received this woman’s help during his tribulations. Even if she threw small tantrums, he shouldn’t make a big issue of it. He pulled the horse to stop the carriage by the roadside, suppressed his anger, lifted the curtain and entered, saying gently, “Miss Hu, what’s wrong? Why are you angry?” Lu Yun spoke softly, but Hu Mei’er was in no good mood, only glaring at him fiercely and saying coldly, “Go away, or I’ll shoot you dead.”

Lu Yun usually showed care and concern for this woman, treating her with great courtesy. Even now he maintained his gentle manner, sitting in the carriage and saying warmly, “Miss Hu, you’ve worked tirelessly along the way, first saving my life, then guiding me to safety. This kindness and virtue, Lu Yun will remember forever.” Hu Mei’er said coldly, “What good is remembering forever? Can it be eaten as food?”

Lu Yun quickly said, “If I can escape this great disaster and return to Beijing alive, I’ll set up a longevity tablet for you and pray for you day and night.” Hu Mei’er spat, “Go burn incense and chant Buddha for your mother – I don’t want any tablet.” Lu Yun boldly took hold of Hu Mei’er’s hand and said gently, “Then what does Miss want? Within my power, I’ll certainly accomplish it for you.”

Hu Mei’er had been waiting for exactly these words. Her charming eyes immediately showed joy, “Is this really true?”

Lu Yun clasped his hands and said solemnly, “Lu Yun of Shandong – my word is my bond, known throughout the four seas.”

Hu Mei’er widened her eyes and nodded vigorously, “I believe you. You’re truly a good person – kind and considerate, different from those fierce, domineering bad fellows.” Lu Yun bowed again, “Miss’s golden words of praise bring me great honor.” He looked at Hu Mei’er and asked, “Miss, what exactly is your wish? Can you tell me now?”

Hu Mei’er smiled and turned her head away, saying softly, “Lord Lu, tell me… if I saved your life this time, would Miss Gu be grateful to me?”

Lu Yun made a curious sound – why would talk of wishes suddenly involve Gu Qianxi? Lu Yun was completely confused and could only answer truthfully, “My wife’s insight rivals men’s, and her nature is generous. If we can return to the capital someday, she will certainly thank you profusely.” Hu Mei’er’s pretty face showed joy as she said shyly, “Profuse thanks aren’t necessary – as long as she likes me, I’ll be extremely grateful.” Lu Yun nodded repeatedly, “This is natural – she’ll certainly like you.”

Suddenly seeing Hu Mei’er smile sweetly, lowering her head with eyes secretly glancing at Lu Yun while her face showed some flush. Seeing her expression, Lu Yun couldn’t help but feel alarmed, thinking, “This look seems familiar – where have I seen it before?” Just as he was panicking, he suddenly heard Hu Mei’er’s soft, gentle voice, “Lord Lu, a person should know contentment – having two to serve you in the future will be enough. You’re not allowed to take more concubines.”

Lu Yun exclaimed in shock, “What two, three? Not allowed what?” Hu Mei’er’s delicate body relaxed languidly in Lu Yun’s arms as she said softly, “Lu Yun… I think I like you. I want… I want to marry you.” Saying this, her hands embraced him even tighter.

Hearing these words, Lu Yun’s face changed dramatically. He quickly pushed her away and exclaimed in alarm, “Miss, such words are absolutely inappropriate!” Hearing this, Hu Mei’er felt as if cold water had been poured over her entire body, her pretty face turning deathly pale. Seeing her dramatic change in expression, Lu Yun panicked, “Miss, don’t you have deep feelings for Yang Langzhong? Lord Yang is a dragon among men, rarely seen in the world, and treats you with gentle affection. I value friendship above all and dare not steal another’s beloved.”

Even Yang Suguan could be used as an excuse – what couldn’t be deflected? Next would she be deflected to Wu Dingyuan? Hu Mei’er screamed loudly, and instantly another cold light shot over. Lu Yun was close and quickly dove forward, inadvertently pressing Hu Mei’er down on the soft cushions. Just as he was about to get up, Hu Mei’er pulled out a dagger and shouted, “Don’t move! Hold me just like this. Otherwise Miss will kill you!”

The two were inches apart, their bodies pressed tightly together. Hu Mei’er tore open her own clothing, revealing her soft red undergarment, and shouted, “Hold me!” But Lu Yun had no intention of embracing her, only smiling bitterly repeatedly, “Miss, please don’t do this. It’s truly embarrassing.” Both ashamed and resentful, Hu Mei’er stared at Lu Yun without a word. Watching Lu Yun reach over to help her put her upper garment back on, Hu Mei’er could no longer contain herself – tears suddenly gushed out as she began to cry. Lu Yun coaxed, “Miss, don’t cry, don’t cry.” But Hu Mei’er pushed him away and covered her face with both hands, sobbing. Lu Yun several times reached out to gently pat her back, but Hu Mei’er ignored him.

Hu Mei’er cried heartbrokenly, weeping, “Can people who’ve done bad things never change back?”

Just as Lu Yun was about to comfort her, he suddenly heard an aged voice from outside the carriage saying quietly, “That’s right – what’s done is done, how can one turn back? You can never change back.” That voice came from nowhere, old and low, seemingly containing infinite sorrow. Both Lu Yun and Hu Mei’er were greatly shocked and shouted together, “Who’s there?” As soon as they called out, the voice faded away and was heard no more. Lu Yun drew his Cloud Dream Marsh and said quietly, “You stay here and protect the child – I’ll go down and look.” Without waiting for a response, he immediately wielded sword light to protect his vital points and leaped down from the carriage.

As soon as he got down, he felt cold wind assault his face. About ten feet away, a black-clad figure strode swiftly, running straight toward the distance. Lu Yun was covered in cold sweat – he had finally escaped court pursuit and safely reached Guizhou with Hu Mei’er. If their whereabouts were discovered and large numbers of pursuers arrived, how could they settle the child in the future? Lu Yun intended to kill and silence the witness, immediately drawing his long sword and running with all his might.

While Lu Yun was chasing the enemy, Hu Mei’er leaped down from the carriage to observe. Seeing Lu Yun had already chased more than ten zhang away, she worried in her heart, fearing Lu Yun might come to harm. But thinking of his words just now, her heart suddenly felt sour again, and she couldn’t help but shed tears once more.

Actually, what Hu Mei’er had said earlier was just the common hope in the hearts of ordinary courtesans. Most of these young women were forced by circumstances and weren’t all cynical about the world. Once they encountered kind and good gentlemen, hope often grew in their hearts, wishing they could abandon all past wrongs and become wives again. Reflecting on her life, she had killed countless people and done much evil. Moreover, her naturally inferior and violent temperament had harmed countless heroes. How many families and clans in the jianghu had grievances against her? It seemed if she wanted to withdraw from jianghu and marry into an official family as a concubine, it was impossible in this lifetime. Her heart felt desolate, then hardened again – since she had already erred, she might as well err completely. What did it matter if she became a prostitute? What did it matter if she was beyond redemption? Grinding her teeth, she wished she could kill hundreds or thousands more.

She viciously kicked away stones on the ground and lifted the carriage curtain to enter the canopy again. Suddenly her body shook and she actually stepped back, nearly screaming aloud.

Inside the carriage somehow sat a masked man, his eyes flashing with sharp light as he stared at her.

Hu Mei’er screamed, and silver needles were about to fly out, but at that moment the black-clad man raised his left hand, holding up an object, and smiled faintly, “Go ahead and attack.”

Hu Mei’er saw clearly that what the black-clad man held wasn’t any weapon or precious sword, but the infant she called A-Xiu. Now Lu Yun had fallen for the tiger-luring-away-from-mountain strategy, leaving only Hu Mei’er alone to face the enemy. Fearing to harm the infant, she immediately screamed, “If you want to kill me, come at me directly! You… put down the child…”

The black-clad old man heard her weakness and only said flatly, “Miss Hu, you’ve killed so many people in your life – why do you now spare the life of one child? Answer me.” Hearing his aged voice, it was indeed the same voice that had spoken outside the carriage earlier. Hu Mei’er’s gaze fell on the infant, panic and fear in her heart as she said tremblingly, “I… I don’t know…”

The black-clad man said coldly, “Hu Mei’er, it’s only because you harbor improper thoughts in your heart. You want to use this child to redeem your sins, to help you climb up and start anew, but I must tell you – you’re too naive. This is useless…” His tone became low and mysterious, “Miss Hu, having already fallen into the sea of sin, there’s no path back. Sink down… sink down…”

Hearing him expose her innermost thoughts, Hu Mei’er immediately wailed loudly, “Who exactly are you?”

The black-clad man said flatly, “I am your companion.” Hu Mei’er’s tears fell like rain as she collapsed to the ground, choking, “Companion…”

The black-clad man slowly rose and tore open his sleeve, instantly revealing a lone wild goose brand. He said quietly, “Miss Hu, come – bring the jade seal and return with me to the boundless hell to meet your new master.”

“New master? Then Lord Jiang, he… he…” Hu Mei’er’s whole body trembled, tears flowing unconsciously. Although the old man before her couldn’t be seen clearly, there was an invisible persuasive power in his voice. The situation was set and extremely difficult to resist – besides throwing in with new powerful nobles, there was no other way to survive. Just as she was about to tearfully agree, suddenly the small infant began crying loudly.

Lightning flashed through Hu Mei’er’s mind as she thought of Lu Yun’s trust in her. She couldn’t help but scream, “I don’t want a master! I don’t want a master! Go away! Don’t bother me!” She pounced out like a madwoman.

The black-clad man, holding the infant, dodged sideways and sighed, “Those who understand the times are outstanding talents – don’t you know this principle?” As he spoke, his hand pressed on his sword hilt, about to draw the sword from its sheath. It seemed Hu Mei’er was in grave danger.

Just then, a loud shout came from outside the carriage canopy: “Who’s inside!” Following this, sword light flashed and the canvas of the carriage was actually cut by this sword. In no time, a young man flew into the carriage – it was Lu Yun. His wrist trembled as Sword Leopard unleashed over ten rays of sword light reflecting outward, illuminating the entire carriage brilliantly. The black-clad old man was startled and said in panic, “Sixth Junior Brother?”

Lu Yun gave a great shout and, taking advantage of his momentary distraction, swept out with his foot in a “Whirlwind Kick” – exactly the “Peerless Consecutive Fists” taught by Lu Guzhan. The black-clad old man hadn’t expected him to change from sword to fist and hastily flashed backward. Suddenly Lu Yun stepped forward with an inserted palm, his body surging forward with a squeeze and lean, his left hand already grasping the infant while his shoulder heavily crashed forward with a roar: “Break!” The black-clad old man concentrated his strength in his chest to take this earth-shaking crash head-on. With a bang, his body floated backward like a paper kite, but he was seen twisting his waist in mid-air and falling to the ground again – this person was defeated but not flustered, showing the bearing of a great general.

Lu Yun’s slight test of moves achieved remarkable results. Seeing the “Kunlun Sword Techniques” integrated with “Peerless Consecutive Fists,” fist and palm internal energy used without restraint, showing thorough mastery – truly worthy of a month’s bitter training and cultivation. Lu Yun, having gained the upper hand, was about to pursue and kill, when suddenly his arm tightened. Looking back, he saw Hu Mei’er holding onto him, tears streaming as she said, “Don’t chase – they have many people. You alone can’t fight them all.”

Seeing her dejected and gloomy, Lu Yun couldn’t help but panic, “Where are you hurt?” Hu Mei’er lowered her willow eyebrows and shook her head without speaking. After a long while, she stopped her tears and her expression became very rigid. Just as Lu Yun was about to ask again, Hu Mei’er had already jumped to the front seat, lightly took the reins with a delicate shout, and drove the carriage forward herself.

In the deep night, Hu Mei’er didn’t speak a word, only driving and traveling. Several times when questioned, she paid no heed, as if the black-clad man had frightened her. Lu Yun looked at her back and couldn’t help but sigh quietly. Having spent so much time with Hu Mei’er, he already knew this demonness seemed fierce but was mostly putting on an act – inside, for some unknown reason, she was quite insecure. Recalling her fragile appearance when crying, he felt even more pity.

He closed his eyes in contemplation – there had been two black-clad men who came to attack. The first was bait, intended only to lure him away; the second was the real player. These two men’s movement skills were extremely strong – if he hadn’t awakened quickly earlier, he really might have fallen for the sound-from-the-east-strike-in-the-west strategy. Lu Yun, suddenly encountering strong enemies, couldn’t help but feel irritated. The infant in the carriage and Hu Mei’er in the driver’s seat – their lives and deaths all pressed on his shoulders. There was no retreat ahead, and whether this journey could pass safely depended entirely on his martial arts cultivation. Life and death, fortune and misfortune, fate and safety – everything rested on the sword.

Lu Yun sat quietly in the carriage, listening to the wooden wheels rolling continuously. His heart full of agitation and helplessness, he again took out that sword manual from his bosom. He lit a fire fold and turned to the last few pages, reading quietly: “Those who hate others thereby gain benevolence; those without love must not resent… thus abandon the heart of good and evil to be called Sword God.” These days he had been practicing energy circulation and training according to what was recorded in the manual, only feeling his thoughts scattered but unable to find the way in. Lu Yun closed the manual, pressed his palms together, and thought, “Master Zhuo, please show great kindness and bless me to master the divine sword and save these innocent lives.” In the distance, cold crows cried, sounding like Zhuo Lingzhao’s proud laughter mocking his own weakness. Lu Yun lay in the carriage, tossing and turning, feeling extremely helpless.

After a month of travel with Lu Yun driving the carriage, it was rare to have leisure time. Gradually half-asleep and half-awake, about an hour later, dawn light appeared – it was already daybreak. Hearing the neighing of horses, the great carriage slowly stopped. Lu Yun opened his eyes and looked out – surrounded by mountains on all sides, but before them was a suspension bridge that looked quite narrow and long in the darkness, though he didn’t know where it led.

Lu Yun rubbed his eyes and asked, “Have we arrived?”

He only heard Hu Mei’er sigh quietly and nod. Lu Yun saw her face was dim and immediately lifted the carriage curtain, leaping to the front seat and asking, “Why aren’t we going?”

Hu Mei’er smiled bitterly and said quietly, “Lu Yun, you’ll leave after leaving the child here, won’t you?” Lu Yun coughed, “I still need to return to Beijing once – you know that.”

Hu Mei’er smiled bitterly, “I know… of course I know…” She covered her face and kept weeping, crying, “That black-clad man was right – I’m just a prostitute who sleeps with anyone, low and base. I never should have had foolish fantasies, much less hoped I could become a pure, good young lady again. But… but… I want you to understand…” She looked up at Lu Yun, her face showing resolute expression as she wiped her tears, “Someday I’ll make you remember my goodness for the rest of your life and never forget me.”

In the dawn light, Hu Mei’er’s face was covered with tears. This demonness looked so deeply affectionate and gentle. Seeing her expression, Lu Yun’s heart was greatly shaken. He reached out and grasped Hu Mei’er’s pale hand, “Miss Hu, no need to wait for that day…” He leaped down from the carriage, his handsome eyes looking back as he nodded, “I’ll never forget you for the rest of this life.” Hu Mei’er’s cherry lips parted slightly in complete amazement, slowly a smile appeared at the corners of her mouth, “You… you really mean it?”

Lu Yun helped her down from the carriage and smiled, “Don’t overthink it. Let’s go to your home right now – I’ve heard much about your legendary aunt and must pay my respects today.” Being held in his arms, Hu Mei’er immediately broke into laughter through her tears, “I… I really do have an aunt – I didn’t lie to you…”

These two came from backgrounds as different as night and day – one was a self-proclaimed upright disciple of the Kong family school, the other was a demonness scorned by all. For them to speak so warmly and softly was truly an extremely rare and strange affair. A month ago, if someone had told these two about today’s situation, they would have been dismissed as talking nonsense. Yet now the two smiled at each other, feeling it completely natural without the slightest awkwardness.

The two walked side by side to the suspension bridge. The bridge was quite narrow, only wide enough for one person to pass. Lu Yun used the dawn light to examine the canyon – he saw a hundred-zhang drop below with churning waves at the bottom, which must be a great waterway – probably that White Water River.

Hu Mei’er smiled, “Look at this bridge – does it resemble the Bridge of Helplessness?” Lu Yun asked, “Your hometown is on the other side?” Hu Mei’er made an acknowledging sound, “My parents are both gone. There are still four sisters at home – their temperaments aren’t as fierce as mine, but they’re much more beautiful than me.” She glanced at Lu Yun and, seeing his appearance like a high monk who had mistakenly entered the Spider Demons’ cave, couldn’t help but laugh, “Forget it – I had thought to persuade you to enjoy all sizes, but seeing you’re a block of wood, talking would be pointless.”

The two stepped onto the bridge. The wooden bridge creaked and swayed up and down continuously, looking quite old. From its long-neglected appearance, the local officials had probably never allocated funds for repairs. Lu Yun asked, “How old were you when you left home? Can you tell me?” Hu Mei’er looked at the village across the suspension bridge, “I left home at eighteen – it’s been thirteen years now. This is the first time I’ve returned.”

Lu Yun saw her seductive mannerisms and often dressed as a Daoist nun, never thinking she was actually a year younger than himself. This time she had inadvertently spoken what seemed to be the truth. He coughed, “Miss, why did you leave home back then?” Hu Mei’er said awkwardly, “Poverty, of course. We Miao people have little farmland and can’t feed so many children – naturally we had to send a few money-losing goods away. We couldn’t very well become officials through examinations, could we?”

Guizhou bordered Sichuan and Yunnan, but compared to these two great provinces, it could only be considered a small place. When Hu Mei’er had described her background earlier, she used “no three days without rain, no three li of level ground” to mock herself, but she had omitted the most crucial phrase: “no three taels of silver per person.” Lu Yun came from Shandong – though life wasn’t wealthy, it wasn’t to the point of sending children away for adoption. Looking at Hu Mei’er, he sighed, “For such a delicate, weak woman like you, it must have been truly difficult.”

Hu Mei’er laughed, “Being a woman has its advantages – who asked for your pity?” She looked at Lu Yun and suddenly laughed, “Lord Lu, here we are – a man and woman, and I’m carrying an infant home. When my aunt sees you, she might misunderstand.”

Lu Yun asked curiously, “Misunderstand what…” Before the word “what” came out, he had already awakened in his heart. Seeing their demeanor, eight or nine out of ten people would indeed take them for husband and wife. Lu Yun thought of Gu Qianxi – if she knew he had shared a carriage and slept together with a demonness for a month, he didn’t know if she’d explode with anger. For a moment, the corners of his mouth showed a slight bitter smile as he shook his head, “If there’s a misunderstanding, so be it – it’s nothing serious.”

Hu Mei’er giggled with evident satisfaction, then said, “Our aunt is skilled at medicinal wines – you must drink a couple more cups later to strengthen your body.” Having worked hard traveling these past days without touching a drop of alcohol, Lu Yun was naturally delighted to hear there was wine and was about to agree when Hu Mei’er smiled mischievously while covering her mouth. From her expression, she seemed to want her aunt to prepare the lovesickness gu poison so she could administer it later.

The two walked shoulder to shoulder when Hu Mei’er suddenly took out a jar of clear dew and sprinkled it on Lu Yun. Lu Yun asked curiously, “What is this again?” Hu Mei’er laughed:

“Our family keeps some poisonous bees that usually fly around the village and sting strangers. This scent repels the poisonous bees.” Lu Yun made an acknowledging sound and laughed.

“I see.”

In the dark road, a strange accent suddenly emerged, stealing Lu Yun’s words. Lu Yun was stunned, and Hu Mei’er was also startled. Seeing what seemed like large numbers of strong enemies in the dark road and thinking of her family’s safety, she couldn’t help but become frightened, murmuring and crying, “Don’t… don’t…” Lu Yun knew there must be an ambush ahead, and his heart went cold. He immediately drew his long sword and protected Hu Mei’er behind him.

His eyes stung as bright light blazed before them, countless torches raised above shoulders – the village indeed had large numbers of troops stationed and waiting. Lu Yun gritted his teeth and looked quickly, seeing this group numbered about two hundred people, all wearing armor. Gao Tiancheng, Gao Tianye and others were mixed in the crowd, but Sa Mau was nowhere to be seen. The leader was a military officer whose face Lu Yun didn’t recognize. Lu Yun grabbed Hu Mei’er’s hand and was about to flee in panic, but Hu Mei’er stood there motionless. Lu Yun said frantically, “What’s wrong? Why aren’t you leaving?”

Hu Mei’er choked speechlessly, but the military officer answered for her, saying flatly, “This Miss Hu’s family and friends have all been captured.” He looked at Lu Yun and said flatly, “Where do you think she can go? Lord – Lu!”

The three words “Lord Lu” exposed his identity. Lu Yun felt as if stabbed by a knife, his whole body shaking, unable to speak. The military officer smiled, “Champion Lu, I am Feng Zhi, sixth-rank official, following orders from Imperial Commissioner Chen Luoshan to pursue you two for a whole month. Lord Lu, give me convenience for mutual convenience – please hand over the jade seal and that child. In consideration of your champion status, His Majesty might be lenient.” After Feng Zhi spoke at length, he lightly waved his hand, “Bring the people up.”

Finally, the last moment had arrived. Lu Yun’s teeth chattered, and Hu Mei’er’s tears flowed freely.

Someone nearby responded loudly as large numbers of strong men walked out – all seemed to be martial arts figures. Leading them, someone held ropes binding the necks of dozens of men, women, elderly and children – all seemed to be Hu Mei’er’s family. Among the women were old and young, many with disheveled clothing. Several children had severely swollen cheeks – they had clearly suffered greatly.

Gao Tianye shouted, “Hu Mei’er, refusing a toast only to drink forfeit wine! You whore are truly detestable, actually eating inside while helping outside, making everyone waste a month’s effort, becoming neither human nor ghost. Watch how I’ll repay you with interest later!” Looking at “Divine Bullet,” his face showed signs of malnutrition and marks of poisonous insect bites – entering the village must have cost some effort. Looking at the other soldiers, most also wore ragged clothes – these pursuers had traveled from Tianshui all the way deep into Yunnan-Guizhou, truly exhausting a full month.

Feng Zhi gestured, and large numbers of soldiers rushed up, surrounding Lu Yun and Hu Mei’er completely. The outer circle consisted of that group of martial arts experts. The disparity in strength was too great, and with her family’s elderly and weak captured, Hu Mei’er could only cover her face and cry, having no fighting spirit. Feng Zhi smiled, “Lord Lu, when His Majesty loved you so much in the Golden Luan Hall, why did you still flee? Don’t implicate Minister Gu, and don’t implicate these men, women, elderly and children. I’ll give you face and not have you bound – please bring the jade seal and child over yourself.”

This final journey was finally complete. All right and wrong, good and evil, beautiful dreams and bright futures turned to ash in this moment. Hu Mei’er sobbed continuously. She threw herself into Lu Yun’s arms and cried loudly, “Lu Yun! It’s all your fault! All your fault! I don’t want to be a good person! I don’t! I don’t!” She desperately pounded Lu Yun’s chest, as if wanting him to return her villain identity – she didn’t want this kind of ending.

Hu Mei’er cried and wailed as she placed the infant on the ground. Lu Yun looked around, hearing the continuous crying of men, women, elderly and children throughout the field. That small child sat by his feet, turning to look at him with both hands open, still wanting him to hold him.

Bitter laughter… what else could be done at this moment besides bitter laughter? In the capital, Gu Siyuan protected him; at Nu Cang, Qin Zhonghai sheltered him; in Tianshui, Hu Mei’er saved him. Now all these people were implicated by his willfulness, each facing great disaster. Lu Yun, oh Lu Yun, what plague have you contracted? Have you taken the wrong medicine?

He must have done something wrong – it had to be so. Otherwise, why would so much misfortune surround him? Why?

Lu Yun lowered his head and wept, his eight-foot-two-inch frame appearing so small, like a humble ant. He bit his lower lip and knelt on the ground, weeping and pleading, “Lord Feng, I can go with you, but please be merciful and spare these men, women, elderly and children. They are innocent.”

Feng Zhi shook his head, his cold, hard voice responding, “Lord – Lu.” Lu Yun pleaded, “Lord Feng, please be a good person just once, won’t you?”

Feng Zhi sighed, squinted his eyes, the corners of his mouth curled up as he shook his finger, “Bleeding hearts aren’t human.”

“Lord… Feng…” Broken and intermittent, mixed with choking, as if carrying a thousand pounds of weight.

“Lord – Lu.” That voice was smooth and melodious, full of brilliance and victory, like the rulers of thousands of years.

Lord Feng stood while Lord Lu knelt – Lord Feng and Lord Lu gazed at each other thus.

Lu Yun smiled bitterly and wept, knowing he was powerless to change the situation. He knelt on the ground and looked up to heaven. All onlookers watched intently, staring at Champion Lu in the field. In the complete silence, they only heard him quietly speak to heaven, “Heaven, is it ultimately impossible?”

His eyes slightly squinted, gazing at the firmament, tears flowing from the small eye slits. He suddenly tore open his upper garment and cried loudly, “Heaven! Is wanting to be a good person ultimately impossible?”

“Annoying to death – arrest him.” Lord Feng frowned, shook his head, and gestured. Dozens of soldiers roared and surged forward. Under the infant’s dazed gaze, Lu Yun before them wailed loudly, his crying accompanied by the screams and wails of the elderly and weak throughout the field, as well as the sound of Gao Tianye reaching out to tear Hu Mei’er’s clothing.

Who could save him? In this moment of dying despair, countless past events flashed through his mind – Gu Qianxi’s gentle encouragement, Gu Siyuan’s wise instructions, and even Princess Yinchuan’s loving gaze. But finally stopping before his eyes was him.

“Kunlun sword emerges, blood flows across oceans, driving straight for a thousand li to the Yellow River’s yellow waters.”

A hero (xia) is caught in the middle – benevolence on the left, righteousness on the right, gray sky overhead, muddy ground underfoot. Only because of love does hatred exist; only because of compassion does sorrow exist; only because of victory and defeat does one help the weak and support the falling; only because the world lacks dao does one violate prohibitions with martial arts.

As if Zhuo Lingzhao’s voice sounded by his ear, that Sword God covered in killing karma earnestly spoke to him. In confusion, his meridians seemed locked tight, choking him breathless. The vigorous blood energy finding no outlet pressed and collided within his body. That wrathful blood energy transformed into substance, bit by bit urging him on. Lu Yun breathed heavily, his hands struggling toward the sky.

Sorrow and resentment are empty, benevolence and righteousness are dreams – only because of belief in the sword does one carry through the dao.

“Yahhh!” Suddenly a loud cry reached his ears, followed by a soldier flying over and crashing directly into Feng Zhi’s back. Feng Zhi was startled and quickly turned around, only to see brilliant light flashing in the field as the precious sword in Lu Yun’s hand suddenly rose more than three feet, becoming a dazzling torch.

Lu Yun’s tears rolled down, but he laughed heartily. He raised his long sword, and with a flash of light, actually cut across his own bare chest. The sword tip pointed toward the ground, the long sword stained with fresh blood dripping along the blade, instantly drawing a blood line at his feet like a boundary separating the soldiers throughout the field from that infant. Everyone was puzzled by the intention and stood there dumbfounded.

Lu Yun cried while wiping his tears, looking like a small child. Suddenly, with a sharp shout, the figure in the field no longer sobbed. He held the sword in one hand, the tip pointing directly at Feng Zhi. Feng Zhi frowned, “Lord Lu, do you want to resist?”

Lu Yun, his chest covered in fresh blood, looked up to the sky. Holding what seemed like a torch in his palm, he said quietly, “I, Lu Yun, swear with my life – whoever dares cross this line will be cut in half by my long sword.” He glared sideways at the soldiers in the field, displaying the same proud demeanor as the “Sword God” of old.

Lu Yun’s eyes were bloodshot as he gritted his teeth, “Miss Hu, come over! Take your family away!”

Hu Mei’er had never seen Lu Yun so angry – even in the medicine shop, she had only seen him frequently wiping tears, never wailing like this. Hu Mei’er was shocked, frightened, delighted, and loving all at once. She tiptoed toward her family when suddenly a soldier shouted, “You dare…” Before he finished speaking, sword radiance activated, and that man’s body was already cut in two, dying horribly on the ground.

Sword Radiance reappeared in jianghu. Gao Tianye, Gao Tiancheng and others all recognized it, immediately trembling all over and retreating. Everyone was shocked and pale, never expecting Lu Yun to possess such divine skills. Even Hu Mei’er was dumbfounded. Feng Zhi screamed in panic, “Everyone attack together! Kill him! Kill him!”

Lu Yun’s eyes were red with killing fury. He struck first, giving a long roar as he drew his long sword and first attacked Feng Zhi. The officers and soldiers hadn’t expected a weak scholar to dare kill so boldly. In their panic to intercept, they suddenly saw Lu Yun’s wrist tremble, and instantly “Sword Wave” swept across. In the towering waves, precious sword plus sword energy – the dozen or so long spears before him were already broken in two. Lu Yun swept out with heavy feet, kicking over a dozen soldiers to the ground. With no one protecting Feng Zhi, Lu Yun grabbed his topknot and dragged him along the ground, hearing him cry and scream miserably, “Hero, spare me! Spare me!”

Lu Yun wore a stern, handsome face, not even looking as his left hand forcefully slammed down, heavily throwing Feng Zhi to the ground. He pointed to the blood line on the ground and said again, “Miss Hu, take your relatives away.”

Seeing Lu Yun’s power like a mad tiger with incomparably strong martial arts, the crowd of martial arts figures looked at each other, not one daring to move. Gao Tiancheng recognized Lu Yun and couldn’t help but swallow saliva, saying hesitantly, “Lu… Lu Yun! Don’t act rashly! You have no chance of winning!” This statement only highlighted everyone’s demoralization. Lu Yun raised Feng Zhi high, signaling the soldiers not to act rashly. Hu Mei’er trembled all over, step by step walking toward her family. This time no officers or soldiers dared block her – first because they feared harming their hostage, second because they valued their lives. They watched helplessly as Hu Mei’er led her entire family straight toward the suspension bridge.

Though Lu Yun was angry, he wasn’t confused. Using Feng Zhi’s life as a shield, he retreated step by step and also reached the suspension bridge.

Just then, a long spear shot swiftly, blood spattering as it pinned Feng Zhi to death on the spot. The soldiers were both shocked and frightened, all turning back in panic, only to hear tremendous laughter from behind as a tall figure emerged from the sea of people, sweeping aside with raised palms anyone who moved too slowly. That person took a great stride and came before the blood line, using his boot to wipe away Lu Yun’s blood traces.

Sa Mau had arrived.

Lu Yun roared angrily, gathering energy to challenge. Sa Mau also sneered coldly. Suddenly hearing his tiger roar, he rushed forward, and the two demons fought desperately before the bridge. With Feng Zhi dead, the deputy officer immediately shouted, “Everyone ignore this fellow – chase the jade seal! Split into two routes for flanking…” The experts throughout the field awakened and no longer engaged Lu Yun directly, all rushing straight toward the suspension bridge from all directions like a tide.

Lu Yun was entangled by Sa Mau and momentarily couldn’t be distracted to block them. He watched helplessly as soldier after soldier climbed onto the bridge like ants on felt. Hu Mei’er alone stood in the bridge’s center, desperately shooting silver needles to block them, but there were too many people and her hidden weapons would soon be exhausted. The other elderly, weak women and children clustered around the infant, crying continuously as they all fled toward the opposite shore – the situation was extremely dangerous.

Lu Yun feared Hu Mei’er couldn’t hold out and instantly risked his life, ignoring Sa Mau’s heavy punches and kicks as he charged repeatedly. All the moves he used were the most dangerous and fierce ultimate techniques – “Sword Leopard” and “Sword Wave” used consecutively, plus the power of Sword Radiance, cutting through everything. Ordinary weapons that clashed with it broke at first contact. When Sa Mau came to pursue, he quickly dodged and killed one or two more people, like a tiger entering a flock of sheep. In the blink of an eye, heads flew chaotically with severed hands and limbs everywhere, then he darted back onto the bridge. Gao Tianye and Gao Tiancheng each used hidden weapons for sneak attacks, but with their own people everywhere, each strike instead killed their companions.

Lu Yun was naturally gentle and benevolent. Except for being forced to kill enemies on the Western frontier battlefield, he had never slaughtered like this. Seeing his current ghostly figure, his eyes already red with killing, that frenzied battling and roaring figure was no different from Zhuo Lingzhao of old.

Lu Yun made several leaps, killing several people in succession before reaching Hu Mei’er’s side, instantly separating the pursuers. The two stood in the suspension bridge’s center, gazing at each other. Seeing Lu Yun’s handsome face covered in blood like fire, Hu Mei’er was both panicked and frightened, crying, “Lu Yun… Lu Yun… where are we going?”

Behind them, soldiers kept coming, but seeing Lu Yun’s figure, none dared approach. Just then, an incredibly strong black figure walked onto the bridge – those bull-like footsteps made the suspension bridge tremble with each step. Soldiers who couldn’t dodge in time were all thrown into mid-air and then fell into the deep valley. The soldiers on the bridge panicked greatly, quickly climbing onto ropes to urgently get out of the way.

Sa Mau appeared. This was now the third direct confrontation between the two. Seeing this demon breathe deeply and spread his palms outward, a shrill wind arose – he had already activated his full power.

Hu Mei’er screamed, “This monster is here again – let’s go quickly!” Lu Yun gritted his teeth. With a great enemy before him and no retreat possible, if Sa Mau killed his way to the opposite shore, the elderly, weak women and children would surely have blood flowing like rivers. At this moment there was no other way – victory or defeat must be decided within a few moves. He gave a great shout and instead ran forward, shaking out a sword thrust directly at Sa Mau’s throat. The sword tip trembled and curved, making its path unclear – this was exactly “Sword Python” from Kunlun’s Thirteen Swords. Though this move was newly learned, its sudden execution had quite a startling effect on the enemy.

Sa Mau gave a sharp shout and dodged sideways, then grabbed a long spear from behind and smashed it directly at Lu Yun’s head. Lu Yun raised his sword to block. With a loud clang, the precious sword imbued with true power immediately cut Sa Mau’s long spear in two, but the spear shaft’s tremendous force shook Lu Yun’s tiger’s mouth, causing hidden pain. In the moment when his blood energy churned, Sa Mau raised the broken spear in his hand and thrust it at Lu Yun’s chest. With a crack, though the spear was only half its original length, the great force transmitted to his ribs had already broken them. Hu Mei’er cried loudly, “Lu Yun!” She wanted to help with silver needles, but Lu Yun blocked her view with his rolling figure, so she didn’t dare strike.

Though Lu Yun had gained the mysteries of Kunlun sword techniques, he had been learning for only a short time and hadn’t yet achieved complete mastery. That Sword Radiance ultimate technique had only been comprehended moments before. If not for repeatedly taking risks with wild charging and relying on Zhuo Lingzhao’s reputation to frighten the heroes, he couldn’t have fought until now. Otherwise, with all the experts swarming up – Gao Tiancheng, Gao Tianye and others plus Sa Mau striking together – they would have killed him long ago.

Sa Mau pressed his advantage relentlessly. Seeing Lu Yun injured with his sword tip drooping, he immediately tried to grab his body and throw him off the bridge. Lu Yun saw Sa Mau approaching and instantly roared wildly, using the ultimate technique Sword Radiance again. That sword didn’t straighten but with fluctuating radiance, the precious sword rose three feet of brilliant light directly toward the strong enemy. Sa Mau hadn’t expected him to still use Sword Radiance and hastily rolled backward, grabbing a soldier as a shield. Hearing a miserable scream, the human shield was already disemboweled, but Sword Radiance was so sharp that after piercing the human shield, it still struck that extremely evil demon, instantly penetrating his chest and body, seriously wounding the powerful villain.

Both great experts were seriously injured, only gasping continuously.

At this time, Lu Yun’s chest was injured, and Sword Radiance further depleted his internal energy. After repeated use, not only was his chest injured, but his dantian energy was also weakened. Seeing Sa Mau only ten feet away and ready to attack again, Lu Yun removed his bloody shirt and wiped the blood from his face, looking toward Hu Mei’er and saying gently, “Miss Hu, Lu Yun begs one thing of you.” Hu Mei’er held the infant and cried, “You… what are you going to do?”

Lu Yun handed over the jade seal and said in a low voice, “If the Gu family’s elderly and young are in danger, please use the jade seal to save their lives.” Hu Mei’er said tremblingly, “Why should I save them? You… aren’t you leaving?” Lu Yun held back tears, “Sorry, this era cannot tolerate someone like me. I must go.” Hu Mei’er exclaimed in shock, “You… what are you saying?” Lu Yun’s tears rolled down, “Please tell Miss Gu that Lu Yun is tired and has gone to a very, very distant place. Please ask her not to worry anymore.” Hu Mei’er knew he intended suicide and couldn’t help but wail loudly, screaming, “No! You can’t die!”

Lu Yun lowered his head, turning his back to Hu Mei’er and saying softly, “Miss Hu, go to your family’s side. Go.”

Hu Mei’er, in her grief, refused to leave. Suddenly hearing Lu Yun roar, “Go!” Hu Mei’er covered her face and ran crying toward the opposite shore. Lu Yun glanced back and, seeing her feet touch solid ground, immediately exhaled forcefully. Sword Radiance flashed as he heavily slashed downward. With a sharp clang, the bridge was quite solid – this strike of Sword Radiance, with impure power, couldn’t sever it in one blow. Lu Yun summoned his remaining internal breath and slashed again with hatred. Though the suspension bridge was massive, it couldn’t withstand two cutting strikes. Wooden planks shattered and steel cables snapped, immediately splitting apart to both sides.

As the broken bridge collapsed, Lu Yun’s internal energy was exhausted and he was the first to fall. The soldiers who had been fleeing continuously suddenly felt nothing under their feet and all screamed miserably as they fell from the bridge. Sa Mau hadn’t expected Lu Yun to commit suicide. In great shock, he leaped forward forcefully and grabbed a section of rope below the broken bridge, actually escaping death.

“When sages don’t die, great bandits don’t cease.” At this moment, with the demon still able to survive, Lu Yun’s body fell, but Sa Mau’s leap inadvertently knocked him toward the bridge rope. For a moment, his body swayed back and forth suspended in mid-air, actually caught by the broken rope. Hu Mei’er cheered. She threw the infant to her aunt and screamed, “Lu Yun! Climb up!” Seeing Lu Yun seemed unconscious, she shouted to the women behind her, “Sisters! Come help me quickly!” The women were all terrified, but one by one they grabbed Hu Mei’er’s ankles and lowered her down the cliff.

Hu Mei’er was several feet from Lu Yun. After several attempts to reach him failed, she immediately screamed, “Lu Yun! Wake up!” Lu Yun had used his final Sword Radiance move and had no strength left. Hearing the call, he only looked up at Hu Mei’er briefly before closing his eyes again. Hu Mei’er screamed, “Lu Yun! Come up! If you don’t come up, I’ll go harm your Miss Gu! Come up! Come up!”

Lu Yun forced his eyes open and slowly climbed upward. He extended his hand but was still two feet short of Hu Mei’er. Hu Mei’er screamed, “Idiot! Extend your sword!” Lu Yun saw the long sword still hanging at his waist. In his daze, he raised the long sword with its edge moving toward Hu Mei’er. The “Hundred Flowers Fairy” ignored the pain and immediately pressed her palm against the sharp blade, her five fingers gripping the sword face. She barely held on and gritted her teeth, “Hurry up – my hand hurts.”

Lu Yun’s right hand grasped the sword hilt and struggled upward. Hu Mei’er’s eyes filled with tears of pain as she cried, “Quick! Quick!” Just as Lu Yun was about to climb up, suddenly his ankle tightened – someone had grabbed him. Lu Yun looked down to see it was Sa Mau. Hu Mei’er was both hateful and angry, her left hand pulling out silver needles to throw down desperately, but with her palm in pain and body hanging upside down, none had any accuracy. After throwing five needles consecutively and reaching for more, her bosom was empty. But the pain in her palm grew worse. Suddenly hearing a tremendous rumbling sound, the broken bridge, under too much stress, was about to collapse. Lu Yun’s body sank downward, actually dropping another half foot. Hu Mei’er was both panicked and frightened, screaming, “Come up! Come up!”

Amid the calls, a black shadow leaped up – but the one who came up wasn’t Lu Yun but Sa Mau. He laughed wildly and was about to grab Hu Mei’er, frightening her face pale. Just then, Sa Mau’s ankle tightened – this time he was grabbed by Lu Yun. Lu Yun looked up at Hu Mei’er and forced a smile, then suddenly used force to kick at the broken bridge. With a tremendous crash, both men fell into the mountain valley together, disappearing without a trace in an instant.

Hu Mei’er hung upside down at the cliff edge, her cherry lips agape, still holding that “Cloud Dream Marsh” sword in her hand, but poor Lu Yun had long since vanished. The Hu family sisters pulling Hu Mei’er had first borne Lu Yun’s weight, then added Sa Mau’s massive body. Now though both men had fallen, the women were already completely exhausted with no strength left to pull anyone up. Hu Mei’er stared blankly at the canyon, her heart confused and bewildered. Suddenly her body was seized by a great force and she flew rapidly up the cliff – someone had intervened to help.

Hu Mei’er was now like an idiot, rescued and lying down in a daze, looking around bewildered. Suddenly seeing her family’s elderly, weak women and children all kneeling on the ground, she didn’t know what had happened. In her confusion, Hu Mei’er only crawled forward. Just then, a cold edge was placed at her throat, and she heard an aged voice say, “Miss Hu, we meet again.”

Hu Mei’er found this voice very familiar and quickly looked up, only to see a black-clad old man crouching beside her. His face wore a mask, his right hand held a sword, but his left hand grasped a square seal – it was the jade seal. Hu Mei’er’s eyes were blurred with tears as she said in a low voice, “You… it’s you again…”

This person was exactly the nameless black-clad old man seen that night – the messenger of hell had arrived. Hu Mei’er’s heart was dead as ash as she collapsed softly to the ground, waiting to be killed. Suddenly at this moment, her eyes saw clearly – at the cliff edge was another black-clad figure. That person had a robust physique, his left hand holding a sword with the tip piercing through the infant’s swaddling clothes, suspending him in mid-air. This infant A-Xiu was like Lu Yun’s cherished love. Hu Mei’er felt as if stabbed by a sword and cried frantically, “Don’t kill him! Don’t kill A-Xiu!”

The black-clad old man held Hu Mei’er down and said sternly, “Be quiet – the master is coming.” Hu Mei’er cried, “Don’t kill him, don’t kill him…” Having been overly frightened, she was already like a madwoman.

Just then, screams came from the opposite cliff. Hu Mei’er lay prone on the ground, her eyes seeing clearly – in the morning mist, an enormously large human figure approached from the opposite shore. In the water vapor, that giant appeared extremely thin and tall, about ten zhang high like a real hell demon manifested. The officers and soldiers on the opposite side of the canyon were so frightened that they all knelt on the ground, none daring to move. Hu Mei’er was so shocked her heart nearly stopped beating. The Hu family’s elderly, young women and children were even more terrified, all trembling.

With the giant shadow’s appearance, the two black-clad men immediately faced toward the opposite canyon, seemingly welcoming the demon god’s arrival.

That giant walked to the canyon’s edge and suddenly fell downward, the enormous black shadow crashing down from the sky. With a tremendous bang, the top had already struck the cliff edge. In her amazement, Hu Mei’er looked closely and saw that giant wasn’t a giant at all but dozens of people stacked up like arhats, forming a human bridge that instantly spanned both ends of the canyon. Hu Mei’er trembled all over and gasped, “You… what exactly are… are you people?”

The black-clad old man smiled slightly and removed his hood, revealing a calm, capable face. Hu Mei’er saw clearly – this person was exactly the former second-in-command of Kunlun, “Sword Cold” Jin Lingshuang. Hu Mei’er hadn’t expected this person to still be alive and couldn’t help but open her mouth wide. She turned to look at the other person, only to see him laugh coldly and remove his mask as well, shocking her to see this person’s face covered in knife scars – it was that most fierce and brutal villain “Sword Gu” Tu Lingxin. In her fear, thinking Lu Yun was dead while all these demons and monsters emerged, Hu Mei’er couldn’t help but wail loudly.

Boom, boom, boom – just then, drums thundered from the opposite shore, drowning out Hu Mei’er’s crying. With the sudden drum sound, the women at the cliff edge looked uncertainly, gazing to see a figure slowly approaching from the opposite canyon.

Like the fire god Zhu Rong with celestial beauty, that figure wore white robes. In the drifting mist, it inspired great fear. Countless people underfoot were stepped on, yet none felt discomfort or complained. Seeing that white shadow, Jin Lingshuang immediately knelt on one knee, raising the jade seal high with both hands. Beside him, Tu Lingxin also knelt on the ground, raising the infant above his head.

The white-robed man stepped onto the precipice. Showing neither joy nor anger, his gaze shifted as he took the jade seal, then unrolled a yellow proclamation. Jin Lingshuang took out red ink paste from his bosom and raised it overhead. The white-robed man dipped the jade seal in red ink and heavily stamped it on the yellow proclamation.

“By Heaven’s mandate, the Emperor decrees: I shall rule with great unity and restore the imperial throne. By this decree.”

The white-robed man’s lips moved lightly as he smiled toward Hu Mei’er, then took out a token from his bosom and threw it over. The token fell onto her skirt. Through blurred, tearful eyes, she saw the token bore seal script reading “Decree of the Zhengtong Dynasty” in six large characters.

Hu Mei’er sat dumbly, not knowing whether she was dead or alive. Just then, with a tearing sound, her upper garment completely split, her breasts and nipples already exposed. Suddenly her right arm felt tearing, heart-rending pain as waves of branding burned with acrid smoke rising. Hu Mei’er had already collapsed to the ground. Before losing consciousness, the last words she heard were the white-robed man’s consolation.

“Welcome as a member of my Nation-Guarding Iron Guard. From now on, serve with all your strength for the country and fulfill the imperial mandate together.”
