Chapter 17: Because of You

Seeing Wen Hao frozen like a wooden chicken, Qi Shuo coughed lightly twice.

Wen Hao slowly came back to her senses, looking skeptically at the young man with his earnest expression.

The heir of Prince Jing was quiet and gentle, not someone who seemed like he would joke around. Besides, they weren’t close.

Could it really have been scared out of him by her?

So Prince Jing’s manor had invited a renowned physician, and naturally the heir of Prince Jing’s distant journey from her previous life would not happen.

Although being frightened into developing heart disease by someone was somewhat rare, considering that the heir of Prince Jing had always been frail and sickly, it was possible.

Even though Wen Hao felt somewhat wronged—after all, the person who fell from the wall was fine, yet the person beneath the wall developed heart disease, where could she go to seek justice?

But she wasn’t someone who shirked responsibility.

After a moment of silence, Wen Hao bent her knees slightly: “I truly apologize. That day I didn’t do it on purpose. I cannot bear the illness for the heir, so I can only send someone later with medicinal herbs and tonics to express my apology.”

Qi Shuo shook his head: “Second Miss Wen need not do so. I don’t lack these things.”

Wen Hao insisted: “The heir is the noble son of a Prince of First Rank, so naturally you lack nothing. But since the heir’s illness arose because of me, I cannot act as if nothing happened.”

“Second Miss Wen should know that the manor once went to your residence to propose a marriage between us, yes?” The young man’s deep gaze shrouded the young woman’s face, making it impossible to discern his thoughts.

Wen Hao’s face immediately flushed hot.

How could this person be so direct!

Her heart stirred as she thought of a possibility: could it be that because she had scared him into heart disease, the heir of Prince Jing planned to have her compensate with herself?

He had just said he didn’t lack medicinal herbs and tonics at all.

“Is that so? I haven’t heard my mother mention it.” Wen Hao’s heart surged with waves, but her face revealed nothing.

Admitting it was impossible. Otherwise, if the heir of Prince Jing knew that she had refused the marriage proposal one moment and climbed the wall to find him the next to resolve her doubts, it would show her face was too thick.

The young man’s lips curved slightly upward, then he suppressed it: “So Second Miss Wen doesn’t yet know.”

“What does the heir mean by bringing up this matter?” Wen Hao asked lightly, alert in her heart.

“Father and Mother don’t know what caused my heart disease. If Second Miss Wen suddenly sends tonics, it might cause them unnecessary misunderstandings.”

“Unnecessary misunderstandings?”

Qi Shuo smiled: “For example, mistakenly thinking Second Miss Wen regrets her decision.”

Wen Hao: “…”

The wind came from somewhere unknown, bringing the fragrance of flowers.

The spring breeze softened the young man’s voice: “So Second Miss Wen need not send anything. Although my heart disease arose because of Second Miss Wen, I don’t blame you.”

Wen Hao listened silently, always feeling something was a bit strange.

The servant’s call came: “Heir, Heir, where are you?”

“Does Second Miss Wen have any more questions?” Qi Shuo wasn’t in a hurry to respond to the servant’s call, asking patiently.

“No…” Wen Hao no longer knew what to say.

“Then Second Miss Wen, please wait here a bit before leaving. I won’t see you out.”

Qi Shuo smiled at Wen Hao, then turned and walked away.

The servant Changshun came forward: “Heir, where did you go?”

“I was bored waiting, so I walked around a bit.”

Changshun used his sleeve to dust off the rattan chair: “Please sit, this servant will pour you tea.”

“No need. I got a bit hot walking just now, so let’s return to my room instead.”

Changshun was startled, then quickly nodded: “Oh.”

The young man walked leisurely ahead, the servant following behind carrying the tea set. A corner of Prince Jing’s manor’s garden gradually fell silent.

Wen Hao pushed aside the flower branches and emerged, gazing for a moment in the direction the heir of Prince Jing had departed, then skillfully climbed over the wall back to the General’s Manor.

As a fresh breeze arrived, only then did she notice that the General’s Manor’s garden also had osmanthus trees, flower trellises, and magnolia flowers blooming at their peak.

Separated by a wall, the people were different, but the spring scenery was similar.

Wen Hao naturally didn’t fully believe the heir of Prince Jing’s words. She lifted her feet and went to where Doctor Zhu was resting.

Unlike the heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease which was “not very serious,” the Old Madam’s heart disease required careful recuperation, so Doctor Zhu remained at the General’s Manor during the day.

Hearing that Second Miss had come to see him, Doctor Zhu suppressed his surprise and came out.

“I apologize for the presumptuous interruption, Divine Physician. There’s something I’d like to ask.”

“What does the young miss wish to ask this old one?” Looking at the young woman of sixteen whose brows still hadn’t completely shed their childish air, Doctor Zhu became even more puzzled.

“The heir of Prince Jing—”

As soon as Wen Hao opened her mouth, Doctor Zhu’s heart rose.

Now whenever he heard about the heir of Prince Jing, his head ached.

Seeing Doctor Zhu’s expression change, Wen Hao asked instead: “What’s wrong, Divine Physician?”

“Nothing, please continue, young miss.”

“The heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease—”

Doctor Zhu’s brow twitched.

Hearing this made his head ache even more!

“Is the heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease serious?”

“Not serious, not serious.” Doctor Zhu said, maintaining his composure.

“Then can the Divine Physician diagnose what caused the heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease?”

Doctor Zhu looked at Wen Hao with changed eyes: “A patient’s condition shouldn’t be discussed with outsiders. Why does the young miss ask this?”

Wen Hao revealed a distressed expression: “My grandmother has always been in good health, yet suddenly developed heart disease. I heard the heir of Prince Jing is the same, so I wanted to understand more about this illness.”

Doctor Zhu coughed once and said: “The causes of heart disease vary. The Old Madam’s heart disease is very different from the heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease.”

“Then why did the heir of Prince Jing develop heart disease at such a young age?” Wen Hao pursued the question unwillingly.

“The heir of Prince Jing—” Doctor Zhu stroked his snow-white beard and said slowly, “It should be due to a sudden fright…”

Wen Hao’s complexion changed slightly, immediately feeling her heart grow heavy.

The heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease really was scared out of him by her.

In her previous life, she had fallen directly to the ground, and the heir of Prince Jing had turned a blind eye and walked away. But this time, the heir of Prince Jing had reached out to catch her, and she had knocked him to the ground.

Distinguishing clearly between gratitude and resentment was Wen Hao’s bottom line as a person. Having confirmed this matter from the divine physician, she could no longer feel at ease thinking she had no responsibility.

Heart disease was no small matter. If the heir of Prince Jing should—because of this—

Wen Hao rubbed her cheeks in distress.

Wouldn’t she then be carrying a life debt!

Seeing the young girl so worried she was scratching her face, Doctor Zhu’s conscience couldn’t bear it, and he hastily said: “The heir of Prince Jing’s symptoms are still mild and have little impact on his daily life.”

“May I ask, Divine Physician, can the heir of Prince Jing’s heart disease be cured?”

Heart disease wasn’t like other illnesses—even if mild, major problems could still arise.

“This—” Doctor Zhu’s expression was difficult, “it still depends on the heir of Prince Jing himself.”

Wen Hao sighed: “Thank you, Divine Physician.”

Even on the carriage ride back to the Wen Mansion, Wen Hao’s expression remained grave.

Wen Chan noticed her younger sister had something on her mind and asked with concern: “Does Second Sister have something troubling her?”

Lin Shi, who was cracking melon seeds, also looked over upon hearing this.

Wen Hao thought for a moment and decided to hear her mother and elder sister’s opinion.

“If one particularly owes someone, how should one make amends?”

Wen Chan was startled hearing this.

Was her younger sister hoping Father would have a change of heart and make amends to Mother?

Lin Shi spat out a melon seed shell and said without hesitation: “Give more silver. Keep giving until the other party is satisfied. Ah Hao, don’t think gold and silver are vulgar. For the wronged party, giving this is most practical.”

“But what if the other party doesn’t lack money?”

Wen Chan gently bit her lip.

Yes, she was talking about Mother.
