Chapter 21: Not Good

Luo Sheng left Luo Chen’s quarters and encountered the two physicians, Wang and Li.

“Physician Wang, a moment please.” Luo Sheng called out in a measured tone.

Ahead, Physician Wang, carrying his medicine chest, paused mid-step and hurriedly turned around to greet her.

Beside him, Physician Li was utterly confused by Physician Wang’s actions, privately thinking that yesterday Old Wang had been excessively polite to this young Miss from the Sheng manor, even making him perform a deep bow along with him—he had no idea why.

Luo Sheng glanced at the medicine chest Physician Wang carried and asked, “Are the two physicians leaving?”

Physician Wang quickly replied, “The young master’s fever has broken, so we’ll return to the medical hall first and come back tomorrow.”

“Physician Wang, a word in private.” Luo Sheng gestured toward the octagonal pavilion not far away.

Seeing Physician Wang eagerly following Luo Sheng toward the pavilion, Physician Li instinctively moved to follow, but was blocked by Hong Dou.

“Our young miss wishes to speak with Physician Wang. Are you trying to eavesdrop?”

Physician Li’s face flushed red with anger, yet he dared not speak his fury aloud and simply flung his sleeve and left first.

Luo Sheng glanced at Physician Li’s retreating figure striding away, then withdrew her gaze and refocused on Physician Wang’s face.

Physician Wang couldn’t help but ask, “What matter does the young miss have in stopping this old one?”

He had developed a covetous desire for the Heat-Dispelling Pill prescription, and facing Miss Luo, he unconsciously felt inferior. However, such a noble young lady surely had nothing to discuss with an old physician like him, right?

“Physician Wang will be coming these next few days, yes?”

“The young master hasn’t completely recovered yet, so naturally I must come daily for follow-up examinations.”

Luo Sheng revealed a faint smile. “That’s good then. In a few days, I’ll have another medicine that I’ll need to trouble Physician Wang to prepare.”

Physician Wang’s eyes brightened. “Rest assured, young miss. This old one will carefully prepare it.”

“With Physician Wang’s word, I can be at ease. Then I won’t delay your work any longer.”

Hong Dou stood beside Luo Sheng, watching Physician Wang depart, and whispered, “Miss, I always feel that old fellow is up to something.”

“Why?” Luo Sheng looked toward Hong Dou, her expression calm.

Hong Dou pursed her lips. “This servant has seen plenty of people who sidle up to you seeking benefits.”

Luo Sheng smiled slightly. “Better to use the familiar than the unfamiliar. Come, let’s go back and cook porridge.”

At the mention of cooking porridge, Hong Dou couldn’t help but swallow.

The meat porridge Miss cooked was truly fragrant. Just this morning she had been given a bowl—it was absolutely delicious beyond words.

Come to think of it, it was strange. She had accompanied Miss at the Grand Commander’s manor, living in luxury and eating the finest foods—what delicacies hadn’t she tasted? Yet why did she feel none of those compared to a single bowl of meat porridge?

The little maid pondered this for a while but couldn’t figure it out, so she simply stopped thinking about it.

Rather than thinking so much, she might as well have an extra bowl of porridge at noon.

Luo Sheng returned to the courtyard and went straight into the small kitchen.

The two maids Qinghong and Hancui were watching the fire while chatting idly. Upon seeing Luo Sheng arrive, their eyes couldn’t help but light up. “Miss, you’ve returned.”

Hong Dou glared fiercely at the two maids.

These two shameless hussies, daring to drink the meat porridge Miss cooked!

Luo Sheng nodded slightly and stepped forward to gently sniff the aroma floating from the clay pot.

It was the pure fragrance of rice.

“Keep the fire at this level, and don’t lift the lid midway.” After giving these instructions, Luo Sheng walked out of the small kitchen.

In the blink of an eye, it was nearly time for the noon meal. Luo Sheng entered the small kitchen again and lifted the lid.

The water and rice had merged perfectly, with just the right consistency—everything was exactly right.

She added pepper, minced ginger, and other seasonings, then put in the marinated fish slices. A pot of fish slice porridge was complete.

Such a simple pot of fish slice porridge, yet it made all three maids swallow in unison.

They certainly hadn’t forgotten the taste of that bowl of meat porridge.

“Send one portion each to Funing Hall and the young master, and you can divide the rest among yourselves.”

Upon hearing this, the three maids cheered together.

“Young master, it’s time to eat.” Fu Song laid out the food brought from the main kitchen one by one.

A bowl of plain porridge, a cup of chicken soup, two dishes of light side dishes—exactly the kind of meal suitable for someone recovering from illness.

Luo Chen frowned. “I’m not hungry yet.”

He unconsciously glanced toward the doorway, feeling somewhat irritated.

Didn’t she say she would send porridge? As expected, he shouldn’t have such high expectations of Luo Sheng.

Luo Chen was still sulking when Hong Dou arrived, smiling cheerfully. “This time it’s fish slice porridge, also cooked personally by our miss.”

“I don’t like eating fish.”

A moment later, Fu Song, who had been swallowing his saliva, stared at the gleaming celadon bowl and silently complained: What happened to not liking fish? He had been waiting for the young master to refuse it so it would be rewarded to him!

The noon meal at Funing Hall was much more sumptuous than Luo Chen’s, yet Old Madam Sheng barely glanced at it, frequently nodding at the bowl of fish slice porridge placed before her.

The rice and water had merged, soft and smooth as one—at a glance, the heat was just perfect.

Old Madam Sheng took a sip and couldn’t help but sigh, then went to eat the fish slices.

The paper-thin fish slices, carrying a hint of pepper’s spiciness, melted upon entering the mouth, making one unable to resist another bite.

After finishing the bowl of porridge, Old Madam Sheng had no desire to eat anything else and sighed with satisfaction.

The greatest truth lies in simplicity. To make a simple bowl of porridge taste this extraordinary was truly remarkable.

Did Sheng’er really cook this?

Old Madam Sheng could hardly believe it, yet she wouldn’t think it could be made by that maid called Hong Dou either. However, aside from Hong Dou and the guard who came and went, her granddaughter had brought no one else when she first came to the Sheng family.

Old Madam Sheng couldn’t figure it out and reached a conclusion: everyone has their strengths, and as her granddaughter, she naturally could have some too.

“Go tell the young miss that from now on, whatever food is sent to Chen’er should also be sent to Funing Hall in one portion.”

That evening, Luo Chen received vegetable porridge and complained while drinking it. “So she only knows how to cook porridge!”

Fu Song: “…” He didn’t want to say anything, just waited to collect the bowl.

The next morning’s meal was a bowl of eel thread soup.

Eel threads slightly thicker than hair strands, cooked into soup together with dried lily buds, winter melon, and scallions, eaten with soft and sweet white steamed buns—nothing could be more satisfying.

After one bun settled in his stomach, Luo Chen began to stare blankly: Luo Sheng was clearly taking revenge, actually only sending one white steamed bun!

It was gone in the blink of an eye…

By the third day, Luo Chen waited with eager anticipation before mealtime, finally waiting for a little maid named Qinghong.

“Today Miss took Hong Dou to the streets and asked this servant to inform you.”

“Breakfast won’t be sent?”

Qinghong shook her head. “Miss said she’s quite busy today, so breakfast and lunch won’t be sent.”

Luo Chen’s face darkened upon hearing this.

He was certain—Luo Sheng was taking revenge!

The very person being deeply resented by the young man, Luo Sheng, successfully obtained the medicinal ingredients for preparing the Essence-Nurturing Pills from Jishi Hall, and encountered several people she didn’t wish to see at the Sheng manor’s entrance.

Miss Su the Elder, Miss Su the Second, and Sheng Jiayu, who was seeing the two sisters out.

Not wishing to waste time with the three, Luo Sheng nodded slightly as a greeting and walked past them toward the interior.

A cold snort came from behind. “Living in someone else’s home and harming others, yet still acting as if nothing happened—I’ve truly learned something new today.”

Luo Sheng paused mid-step, thought for a moment, then turned around and walked up to Miss Su the Second, asking calmly, “Is Miss Su the Second speaking of me?”

Miss Su the Second turned her face aside and said quietly, “Doesn’t the person being spoken of know perfectly well in her heart?”

“Second Sister, don’t meddle.” Miss Su the Elder gently tugged at Miss Su the Second’s sleeve and curtsied to Luo Sheng. “My younger sister is ignorant. I hope Miss Luo won’t hold it against her.”

In Miss Su the Elder’s view, as long as Luo Sheng didn’t cling to her elder brother, she would thank heaven and earth. Provoking the other party was truly unwise.

Luo Sheng quietly looked at Miss Su the Elder for a moment, then uttered two words: “Not good.”
