Chapter 65: The Meeting

“Miss is reading.” Hong Dou walked over quickly. “You’ve been sleeping quite a lot these past two days. Won’t reading make you even more drowsy?”

Kou’er scrutinized Luo Sheng’s complexion and noticed something wrong: “Miss, your cheeks are a bit flushed. Are you feeling unwell?”

As she spoke, she reached out to feel Luo Sheng’s forehead. Touching the burning forehead, she couldn’t help but cry out: “Miss, you have a fever!”

Luo Sheng set the scroll aside, her tone indifferent: “It’s nothing.”

She still had the Essence Nourishing Pills and Cold Expelling Pills that she had asked Divine Physician Wang to prepare in Jinsha, and both medicines were originally developed by Divine Physician Li.

The Cold Expelling Pills were most effective against invasion by wind evil, but they needed to be taken after the fever developed for the best effect.

She had only just started running a fever.

Miss Luo had an excellent constitution, but the journey’s hardships, combined with the matters of her younger brother and Si Nan, had ultimately proven too much for her to bear.

Once that breath of determination in her heart was released, illness came.

“How can it be nothing! Miss, when you’re sick you must see a physician. Avoiding treatment out of fear is unacceptable…” Kou’er anxiously paced in circles.

Their Miss had such a good constitution—she had such strength when hitting people! How could one trip to Jinsha make her health deteriorate?

The more Kou’er thought about it, the more anxious she became, yet she didn’t dare presume to fetch a physician on her own and could only nag around Luo Sheng.

Luo Sheng suddenly understood why Miss Luo had taken Hong Dou to Jinsha instead of Kou’er.

This maid was too talkative—most people couldn’t endure it.

“I have medicine, given by the divine physician.” With one sentence, Luo Sheng stopped Kou’er’s nagging.

Hong Dou didn’t doubt Luo Sheng’s words at all and hurriedly asked: “Then have you taken it?”

“It’s not yet time to take it. Is there something happening outside?”

Hong Dou presented the card: “This is a visiting card sent from Prince Kaiyang’s manor. This servant thought you might be interested in seeing it, so I brought it.”

Luo Sheng took the card but didn’t immediately open it. Instead, she asked: “Many manors sent cards?”

“Yes, all sorts of riffraff dared to send cards to Miss. This servant rejected them all.”

Luo Sheng nodded slightly.

At this time, she truly had neither the energy nor the mood to deal with too many people.

However, why would Prince Kaiyang’s manor send a card?

Luo Sheng opened the card and read it in silence, still unable to find a reason.

Prince Kaiyang simply wanted to meet with her once.

Luo Sheng thought again of that black-clothed person who had wanted to knock Xiu Yue unconscious that night.

Prince Kaiyang had received an imperial mandate to investigate Prince Zhennan’s manor—who knew what he had discovered.

Now Luo Sheng finally understood why they had repeatedly encountered the lightly-traveling Prince Kaiyang on the road. They traveled slowly by carriage, while Prince Kaiyang, burdened with his mission, couldn’t go fast either.

She decided to go see Wei Han.

Since she harbored thoughts of revenge, whether it was Prince Kaiyang, Prince Pingnan, or even the Crown Prince—if they didn’t approach her, she would find opportunities to approach them proactively.

“Go send a reply.”

Hong Dou walked out of the room and smugly pursed her lips at Kou’er: “How about that? I understand Miss’s thoughts best, don’t I? She can refuse to see others, but she’ll definitely see Prince Kaiyang.”

On the road, she had noticed Miss treated Prince Kaiyang differently—she had actually allowed him to owe her money.

Tsk tsk, after all, this was the man Miss had taken a fancy to on the street back then.

Luo Sheng and Wei Han met at a teahouse.

The private room was quiet, tea fragrance pervaded the air, and the early summer breeze blew in through the open latticed window, refreshing one’s spirit.

However, Luo Sheng’s condition at this moment wasn’t very good.

Her head was somewhat foggy, but fortunately she had applied some powder to her face to conceal her sickly appearance.

“Why did Your Highness ask to meet with me?” Luo Sheng spoke first.

Her voice tended toward coldness and, due to the fever, had gained a bit more hoarseness than usual. Hearing it in Wei Han’s ears felt inexplicably peculiar.

“I wanted to ask Miss Luo for a favor.”

“I wonder what I could possibly help Your Highness with?” Luo Sheng looked at Wei Han with a smile.

Yet in her heart she silently made up her mind: she wouldn’t help with any favor, not even something requiring minimal effort.

Prince Kaiyang was acting under orders. To call him her enemy was perhaps too much, but they naturally stood on opposing sides—this was an unchangeable fact.

Between her and him, they might one day cross swords.

Looking at the young lady’s beaming smile, Wei Han cast aside the hesitation he’d felt before sending the card: “I wonder if Miss Luo would be willing to tell me what interests Divine Physician Li. If it’s inconvenient to specify exactly what, even pointing me in a general direction would be good.”

He had repaid the three thousand five hundred taels of silver in full, not a tael less. Perhaps Miss Luo would, considering how he had yielded his number token that day, give him some guidance.

During the few short days of contact on the journey back to the capital, he felt that although the young lady before him was ruthless and greedy, she was easy to talk to.

At least when he had Shi Yan propose eating on credit, she had agreed quite readily.

Luo Sheng looked at Wei Han with a smile on her face, yet was sneering coldly in her heart.

This man’s face was no thinner than hers. Just because he had yielded one number token, he wanted to demand repayment for this favor.

She had said at the time that she would use the number token to offset the debt—it wasn’t taken for free. As for him voluntarily sending over the banknote, that was his business.

Moreover, shouldn’t there be interest on three thousand five hundred taels of silver?

Using one number token as interest—calculated properly, it was still he who profited.

Seeing Luo Sheng looking at him with a smile but saying nothing, Wei Han felt somewhat confused: “Then Miss Luo’s meaning is—”

“No.” Luo Sheng directly and crisply spat out two words.

Wei Han’s lips twitched imperceptibly.

It wasn’t that he hadn’t considered the possibility of being refused. Sending a card to the Grand Marshal’s Manor was done with a hopeful attitude. What he hadn’t expected was that Miss Luo would so readily agree to come meet him, yet refuse so readily as well.

If he didn’t truly need the divine physician’s services, he wouldn’t be sitting here so thick-skinned.

Seeing the disappointment and self-mockery in Wei Han’s eyes, Luo Sheng felt somewhat vindicated and curled her lips: “However, if Your Highness tells me the reason you’re seeking medical treatment, I might consider it.”

She didn’t care about others’ private affairs, but knowing more about Prince Kaiyang’s matters wasn’t bad—who knew, it might contain something she needed.

“No.” This time, it was Wei Han who refused crisply and decisively.

Hearing this, Luo Sheng’s expression didn’t change. She picked up her teacup, took a shallow sip, and set it on the table: “If that’s the case, then I’ll take my leave. I’m very sorry I couldn’t help Your Highness.”

Wei Han looked at the composed young lady and felt puzzled.

Why was she so interested in his private affairs?

After his puzzlement, he simply asked directly: “Why is Miss Luo so curious about my private affairs?”

Luo Sheng thought for a moment and smiled: “Perhaps because I find Your Highness handsome?”

Wei Han’s brows moved.

Was this answer mocking him?

That aside, what was the meaning of that uncertain tone? Did she need him to confirm it?

Wei Han suddenly felt this meeting was a mistake—one he had initiated himself.

Learn from one’s mistakes. If he ever dealt with Miss Luo again in the future, he would punish himself by scrubbing chamber pots for Shi Yan.

Though annoyed in his heart, he maintained his composure on the surface.

Wei Han smiled slightly: “Today I have been presumptuous. Let me escort Miss Luo out.”

Luo Sheng stood up: “No need. If others see Your Highness walking with me, it would be bad for Your Highness’s reputation.”

Having said this, she stepped toward the exit, but her feet gave way and she hastily steadied herself by grasping the table edge.
