Chapter 2171: Modern Arc: The Relationship Feels Different

“Ninth Master, you really don’t need me to treat your leg anymore.”

Back in the tent at Lu Beicheng’s camp—a space so large it rivaled a hotel room—Zhen Jiu’er still wore a face full of resentment.

She used to be so free. Whenever something happened, she’d always be the first to rush to the front.

Lu Beicheng might not have liked her methods, but at least he never held her back completely.

But ever since she’d been injured, things had changed. Now wherever she went, A’Ke tagged along like a shadow, and her personal freedom was restricted everywhere.

She truly had no freedom left at all.

“The imperial tomb was robbed. I want to go take a look too.” She muttered.

Lu Beicheng opened his laptop and tossed out a flat reply: “What does that have to do with you?”

After the main convoy arrived, they had built a signal tower here, using their own group’s network. Though the connection was difficult, they could still link up with their internal network, so Lu Beicheng’s work hadn’t been delayed much.

All that effort spent building a signal tower, just so Lu Beicheng could work conveniently—it showed just how important Ninth Master’s work was.

He had opened his laptop again to work, seemingly not paying attention to anyone else.

Jiu’er felt a bit gloomy. “Ninth Master, since you’re busy, I won’t disturb you.”

Once she got outside, she’d wait for the right chance and go take a look at the actual situation at the imperial tomb.

“Mm.” Lu Beicheng, surprisingly kind, nodded.

Jiu’er let out a breath of relief and was just about to turn and leave.

But she hadn’t expected that the moment she turned, before she’d even taken her first step, Lu Beicheng’s cool voice rang out:

“Sit over there. Read a book, or sleep if you like. Just be quiet and don’t disturb me.”

“What?” Zhen Jiu’er was so startled her eyeballs nearly rolled out.

Wasn’t it better to let her go outside?

Lu Beicheng finally raised his eyes and looked at her. “So unwilling to stay by my side?”

“That’s not it.” He was her Ninth Imperial Uncle—she’d be willing to stay by his side for a lifetime.

But hadn’t there been too many strange things happening lately?

In this city of Ying’an, there were many people who wanted to harm him. It wasn’t safe for her Ninth Imperial Uncle to be here at all.

She wanted to know whether the tomb raiders and the assassins were the same group of people.

According to Qiao Qiao, the tomb raiders didn’t seem to have taken anything valuable, which meant they hadn’t really come to rob the tomb at all.

Could it be that it was just a ploy to draw Ninth Master’s bodyguards away to guard the imperial tomb instead?

There truly were many mysteries weighing on her mind.

But Ninth Master gave her no chance to investigate at all.

“Sit beside me.” Lu Beicheng’s attention returned to the screen.

Jiu’er felt somewhat helpless.

If he weren’t her Ninth Imperial Uncle, she wouldn’t listen to him at all.

In the end, she still walked over and sat down beside Lu Beicheng.

He was sitting on the ground, on a thick blanket.

Jiu’er could only sit on the blanket too. Although there were some books here, they were all business books, which she had no interest in reading.

Lu Beicheng had A’Ke bring in some snacks, but Jiu’er barely touched them.

Sitting like that, after yawning three times in a row, she started to feel drowsy.

Her head tilted and fell against his body.

Lu Beicheng reached out a hand to catch her head as it nearly slid off him, then slowly lowered her down so she could rest on his lap.

He had originally planned to keep working, but once his gaze landed on her small, palm-sized face, he found he couldn’t look away.

The relationship between the two of them had, from a certain night onward, seemed to become somehow different.

When exactly had it started?
