Vol 1 – Chapter 8: Top Scholar of the College Entrance Exam

The atmosphere was awkward – Ruan Yu realized that this young man didn’t seem to welcome her presence.

“You two can get acquainted today, perhaps discuss study methods or experiences with the college entrance exam,” Shen Bing checked her watch, then looked at her son. “I need to head to the airport now. Call me if anything comes up.”

The young man shrugged without responding.

Ruan Yu stood in place, watching Shen Bing leave. When she turned back, the young man was doing a handstand again. Supporting himself with his hands against the wall, he flipped upside down with remarkable agility.

But what kind of exercise was this supposed to be?

“Shall we talk?” Ruan Yu asked.

“Whatever,” the young man responded dismissively.

“Are you planning to maintain that position while we chat?”

The young man remained silent, holding the position for a while longer until he couldn’t sustain it anymore. He dropped down to sit on the floor and, apparently feeling hot, took off his school uniform jacket and tossed it onto the bed.

Only then did Ruan Yu properly notice that this was his bedroom.

The bedroom was spacious, with a large desk to the right of the bed. Two chairs sat in front of the desk – one didn’t match the desk’s style, appearing to have been brought in temporarily from somewhere else.

This would be her workplace for the tutoring job.

Ruan Yu had tutored students in their bedrooms before, but that was a seven-year-old elementary school student. This young man, however, was tall and mature-looking – without his school uniform, there seemed to be little age difference between them. He even stood half a head taller than her. Was it appropriate for them to be alone in his bedroom?

“You’re also a student at Yang Shan University?” he suddenly asked.

Ruan Yu snapped out of her thoughts, noting his use of the word “also.”

Who else was a Yang Shan University student?

Before she could respond, he asked: “I heard you were last year’s top scholar in the college entrance exam?”

“Mm,” she responded softly, not wanting to make a big deal of it.

“That’s impressive,” the young man gave her a thumbs up. “Well then, Miss Top Scholar, how about I test you?”

This was a challenge.

Judging by his smug smile, he had come prepared.

“How many tutors have you had?” Ruan Yu asked.

“What do you mean?”

“Exactly what I asked.”

The young man spread his five fingers and waved them at Ruan Yu.

Five already.

He was quite something.

This wouldn’t be easy money.

Seeing Ruan Yu lost in thought, the young man suddenly smiled.

His roguish smile reminded her of someone.

“What’s wrong? Scared?”

“No.”

“Then what are you thinking about?”

“I’m thinking that if I pass your test, you’ll have to take mine too.”

The young man perked up with interest. He jumped up from the floor, and rolled up his shirt sleeves, with an expression that seemed to say ‘Bring it on.’

They walked to the desk, and Ruan Yu sat in the darker-colored chair.

“How do you want to test me?”

The young man pulled out a piece of paper from the desk drawer with a math problem written on it.

“If you can solve this, you win.” He slapped the paper down in front of Ruan Yu with naive confidence.

“That’s all?”

“Hmph, you’re quite arrogant. Wait until you solve it before you brag-“

Before he could finish speaking, Ruan Yu had already pulled a black pen from the pen holder, removed its cap, and quickly wrote down the solution steps on the paper.

She hadn’t even seemed to read the problem carefully – as if one glance at the question was enough for her to know the answer.

The young man was stunned.
