After seeing Mr. Pei off, Chang You quickly gathered the core design team members for an emergency meeting.
The new phone was going to be OTTO Technology’s top priority. Whether they could continue the success of the OTTO E1 phone depended on this design. No one dared to slack off.
Soon, everyone arrived.
Chang You looked around. The core staff members were clearly full of energy.
After all, they had received generous year-end bonuses and had enjoyed a long Spring Festival holiday. Everyone was eager to achieve something great.
“First, I have good news for everyone – we’re finally making a new phone!”
Excited and expectant expressions spread across everyone’s faces.
“However…” Chang You shifted his tone, “Mr. Pei has some requirements for the new phone.”
Everyone nodded, thinking this was natural.
After all, the OTTO E1 phone’s success was also thanks to Mr. Pei’s guidance. Having Mr. Pei provide requirements actually made everyone feel more secure.
Chang You said, “Mr. Pei wants us to use the pop-up camera full-screen solution, to incorporate as many new supply chain technologies as possible, and… the pop-up camera location is quite special…”
Chang You briefly summarized Mr. Pei’s requirements, especially emphasizing the pop-up camera position.
Everyone looked at each other, seeing confusion in each other’s eyes.
The pop-up camera full-screen solution was being adopted by many phone manufacturers, but all known models still in development had their pop-up cameras at the very top.
What did it mean to put it on the upper part of the long edge?
Chang You looked serious. “So the primary purpose of today’s meeting is to analyze Mr. Pei’s intentions and finalize the new phone’s design concept.”
“Regarding some details of this phone, Mr. Pei was rather vague, but he repeatedly emphasized this pop-up camera position several times. I think this must be Mr. Pei’s key point.”
“Xiao Jiang, you’re in charge of exterior design. Share your thoughts first.”
Xiao Jiang had brought his laptop and had already quickly sketched a rough diagram.
Frowning slightly, he said, “First, in terms of aesthetics, compared to phones with cameras popping out from the top, having it pop out from the side creates a more unique and recognizable design.”
“Users hold the lower half of the phone, so this camera position won’t be blocked by hands. Most people take selfies with their right hand, and the angle would be suitable, avoiding the issue of bottom-mounted cameras capturing nostril shots. Whether holding the phone horizontally or vertically, the photos should look better…”
“Also, with this position, the rear camera module would definitely need to be center-aligned, making the back more aesthetically pleasing.”
“But these reasons aren’t very compelling. Since Mr. Pei specifically emphasized this pop-up camera position, there must be some very important consideration.”
Xiao Jiang had given several points from the camera perspective, but clearly these reasons weren’t sufficient.
He looked at Chang You. “Manager Chang, did Mr. Pei say anything else about the camera?”
Chang You tried hard to recall Mr. Pei’s earlier words.
Suddenly, he remembered a detail he’d overlooked. “Right! Earlier I hinted to Mr. Pei that this position seemed odd, asking if it should be made symmetrical, meaning moving the pop-up camera to the center.”
“But Mr. Pei misunderstood. He actually said we could add another pop-up camera on the upper right or lower left to create symmetry! But this plan was too ridiculous, so Mr. Pei must have been joking.”
Xiao Jiang frowned. “Upper right or lower left…”
He quickly worked on his laptop, adding pop-up cameras to the upper right and lower left of the long edges to see the effect.
“After adding to the upper right, the whole phone becomes T-shaped – nothing special about that.”
“But adding to the lower left… wait, Manager Chang, don’t these two pop-up cameras look like shoulder buttons?”
Chang You looked at Xiao Jiang’s computer screen. On the phone prototype, there were rectangular protrusions on the upper left and lower left long edges. When turned horizontally, they looked exactly like shoulder buttons.
Shoulder buttons were standard design on gaming console controllers.
Following standard controller usage, shoulder and trigger buttons were pressed by both index fingers. In racing games, they usually controlled throttle and brakes; in shooting games, they controlled aiming and shooting – crucial buttons.
Chang You instantly had an idea. “Could Mr. Pei be hinting that we should create two trigger buttons and develop a gaming phone specifically for mobile games?”
“You mean combining pop-up cameras with trigger buttons?”
“That’s not right. When Mr. Pei said this, he was being sarcastic, and didn’t emphasize making two pop-up cameras.”
“Besides, having two pop-up cameras serves no purpose anyway.”
Xiao Jiang said, “Manager Chang, this is clearly Mr. Pei’s hint!”
“Mechanical structures take up too much space. One front camera is enough – two would be meaningless. But Mr. Pei mentioned this to prompt us to create this ‘symmetrical design’!”
“Manager Chang, how about this design: The pop-up camera stays on the upper long edge, but we make it the right trigger button. On the lower long edge, we add a separate left trigger button.”
“Only in scenarios like selfies and video calls would this pop-up camera extend. In other scenarios, it would retract, protruding just slightly to serve as a clickable trigger button.”
“The left trigger would have no camera functionality but the same tactile feedback as the right trigger – wider than other physical buttons, protruding from the body, clickable with strong response and proper key travel. This would optimize the gaming experience.”
Chang You nodded in realization. “So this phone is a gaming phone with two built-in physical trigger buttons?”
Xiao Jiang nodded. “Exactly, and thinking this way, many points connect!”
“Our phone will use flagship chips, maximize specifications, and have much larger battery capacity than regular phones. Such performance would be wasted on just browsing and chatting – it’s meant for gaming.”
Others in the meeting room, inspired, began contributing their thoughts.
“Right! One key issue with pop-up cameras is that front cameras won’t have particularly high resolution, which male gamers who prioritize gaming won’t care about much. This means pop-up cameras are more suitable for gaming phones.”
“Exactly. With full-screen technology, phone screens will change from traditional 16:9 to 19:9 or 19.5:9, meaning wider screens. For landscape mobile gaming, this provides wider field of view – an advantage even for traditional phones.”
“I think there’s another crucial point – what’s Tenda’s core business? Gaming!”
“We could collaborate with Tenda Games or Shangyang Games to release racing or shooting mobile games like the mobile version of Lonely Desert Highway or Sea Fortress, with phone-exclusive optimizations… wouldn’t that highlight our advantages?”
Chang You nodded enthusiastically.
Everything lined up perfectly!
No wonder Mr. Pei wanted the pop-up camera in that position – he was hinting at dual shoulder buttons!
Since pop-up cameras already had mechanical structures, using them for gaming trigger buttons maximizes efficiency compared to other pop-up camera phones.
As for the lower left shoulder button, while it needed mechanical structure too, it didn’t need to be as large as a pop-up camera, so it wouldn’t take much internal space.
Combined with full screen, flagship chips, and other details, the gaming experience would improve significantly.
Chang You was thrilled. “Exactly! This must be Mr. Pei’s intention!”
“Let’s continue refining the details based on this direction!”
With a clear direction, everyone became less confused and began discussing additional phone features enthusiastically.
“Since we’re making a gaming phone, let’s make it look cool – mech-style back cover with LED lights. E1 had LEDs too, so we’re continuing tradition.”
“Battery capacity definitely needs to be large. Recent fast-charging technology has improved too.”
“Under-display fingerprint tech isn’t perfect yet, but let’s add it for tech appeal.”
“Gaming needs dual speakers for sure.”
“Move charging port and headphone jack to center-right edge so they don’t block hands during landscape gaming.”
“Put power and volume buttons on the right edge too, making room for shoulder buttons.”
“Since players are used to our phone’s weight and we need large batteries, we don’t need protruding rear cameras. This improves aesthetics further.”
With everyone contributing, a rough design plan emerged quickly.
While many details needed consideration, the phone’s direction was crystal clear.
Xiao Jiang took notes while listening to the discussion.
Chang You was delighted. “Great! Let’s finalize this plan. Everyone start preparing immediately!”
“Thinking about it now, Mr. Pei was indeed far-sighted, seeing much further than I did.”
“I originally planned to follow E1’s success formula, but now I see that was too conservative.”
“I have a feeling – this new phone designed according to Mr. Pei’s plan will definitely be a huge success!”
