Synopsis:
Originally titled Red Beans Bloom in the Republican Era (《红豆生民国》), this novel follows He Yunqin, the son of a wealthy Shanghai textile magnate, who returns to China after studying abroad. While investigating a series of mysterious disappearances, he unexpectedly crosses paths with Yu Hongdou, a female student at St. John’s University.
He Yunqin is determined to find the missing movie star Chen Baidie, while Hongdou’s cousin is also among the missing. Independently, they both place their hopes in Detective Wang Peter, a legendary investigator renowned for solving seemingly impossible cases. Hongdou takes the examination to become Wang Peter’s assistant, and her extraordinary memory earns his admiration and selection.
Wang Peter has been a close friend of He Yunqin for many years, and the younger He son is himself an expert in forensic trace evidence analysis. Working together, the three carefully unravel the clues, peel back layers of deception, and ultimately solve the case, successfully rescuing both Chen Baidie and Hongdou’s cousin.
As they investigate side by side, He Yunqin and Hongdou grow close. Hongdou’s bright, lively personality captivates him from their very first meeting. With the case resolved, He Yunqin embarks on a determined pursuit of her—courteous as a gentleman, indulgently affectionate, and irresistibly possessive in his quest to win her heart.
