“This is the last question,” the Man-Snake said as he flipped to the final page.
It was the longest and most abstract problem yet.
The two sat upright and attentive. At this point, they no longer cared much about the matter of keeping or losing “characters,” only anticipating what kind of information the third question would bring.
The Man-Snake cleared his throat: “Suppose there’s an infinitely large room with infinitely many monkeys inside, and in front of them are infinitely many typewriters…”
“Little Jin,” Chen Junnan turned his head and said. “I know this one. Just learn from me.”
The Man-Snake shook his head and continued: “The room owner’s demand is that, given infinite time, these monkeys will randomly type on the typewriters. Here we don’t consider any issues of food, water, or lifespan, until one monkey continuously and uninterruptedly types out a pure English version of ‘Macbeth.'”
“Got it,” Chen Junnan nodded.
Jin Yuanxun beside him also nodded in half-understanding agreement.
The Man-Snake: “When a monkey truly writes out ‘Macbeth,’ the room owner can take away this masterpiece and simultaneously claim that he’s developed a method to turn monkeys into literary masters, gaining endless wealth and power.”
“Uh…” Chen Junnan felt the story beginning to deviate from its track. He didn’t seem to have heard this part before.
At this point, the Man-Snake changed direction, saying: “But here comes the problem. Suppose that in this infinite time, the owner discovers that the monkeys haven’t typed out ‘Macbeth,’ but instead only typed simple English words, like ‘APPLE’ and such, he would also reward that monkey, calling it a ‘Word-Maker.’ Of course, later there also appeared ‘Sentence-Makers.'”
“Great,” Chen Junnan sighed. “This question is about to develop into territory I don’t understand.”
Jin Yuanxun looked even more bewildered, his expression more confused than before.
“The owner believed that although humans and monkeys don’t speak the same language, the ‘Word-Makers’ and ‘Sentence-Makers’ would guess the reason they were rewarded. When many ‘Word-Makers’ and ‘Sentence-Makers’ gathered together, they could connect words into sentences and accumulate sentences into passages, and what they created would infinitely approach ‘Macbeth.'”
“And then…?” The two felt like they were listening to an incredible story, where they were both monkeys being manipulated within the tale.
“This damn…” Chen Junnan blinked. “Wouldn’t this drive the monkeys crazy?”
“The monkeys didn’t go crazy,” the Man-Snake answered. “They’re monkeys after all, so they quickly forgot all this and cyclically began typing again. But the owner discovered another thing—if he didn’t reward them when they typed words or sentences, these monkeys wouldn’t be able to type even those words and sentences the next time, making his goal endlessly distant. Although time was infinite, no one wanted to wait eternally within infinity. So even the owner began repeating cycles—he distributed rewards again and again, and reshuffled everything again and again.”
“In other words… originally the person trapped the monkeys, but now the monkeys have in turn trapped the person too,” Chen Junnan said thoughtfully.
“That’s what the question says,” the Man-Snake nodded. “After all, if these infinitely many monkeys were discovered by animal protection people, the room owner would also face enormous trouble. So he can’t release the monkeys and can only keep them trapped. Many times it’s like this… if you achieve results through animal experimentation, you’ll receive flowers and applause, but if you can’t achieve results, it becomes animal abuse and you await punishment.”
“Well, well, is this based on real-life themes?” Chen Junnan asked.
After hearing this, Jin Yuanxun took a deep breath and said: “Brother… what’s the question in your story?”
“The question is…” the Man-Snake said while looking at his notebook. “Upon learning that the room owner is preparing to abandon this room… as one of the infinitely many monkeys, how would you lead all the monkeys to escape from human hands?”
After hearing this, Chen Junnan and Jin Yuanxun froze for a moment, feeling that this question didn’t seem to have a precise answer.
Even if they could really provide a solution, the Man-Snake would need to judge it based on his own experience.
Before the two could speak, the Man-Snake slowly closed the notebook and tossed it onto the table.
“But those are infinitely many monkeys,” the Man-Snake said. “They not only have infinite lifespans but also infinite numbers… Once they’re released back into human society, wouldn’t human society completely collapse? No… even if we released them into the forest, the forest would instantly disappear…”
Chen Junnan and Jin Yuanxun felt that the Man-Snake didn’t want to ask questions, but rather wanted to find people to discuss this ultimate question about the “Land of the End.”
Could a group of broken and battered people who disregarded death and possessed transcendent abilities truly be released back into society?
They were utterly incompatible with humanity, just like infinitely many monkeys.
If they truly escaped, they would be released into various time periods, various social classes, various cities, producing unknown effects on the entire world.
This was perhaps the saddest question for everyone—they wanted to escape, but no one would welcome their escape.
After escaping with the memories and abilities from the “Land of the End”… how could they return to normal lives?
“So ‘escape’ really isn’t the only path, is it?” Chen Junnan said.
“Hmm?” The Man-Snake’s eyes flickered as he pulled back his thoughts that had flown to the horizon. “Elaborate.”
“In your story… besides escaping, the monkeys obviously have a second path.” Chen Junnan reached out and pointed at the notebook on the Man-Snake’s table.
“For example?”
“For example, writing out ‘Macbeth’ accurately and without error.”
“What…” The Man-Snake froze. “Is that also a path…?”
“Although it’s distant and exhausting, it looks like the safest path,” Chen Junnan said. “In the hypothetical scenario you described, once one monkey writes out ‘Macbeth,’ all the monkeys in the story would be considered its colleagues and would similarly be adopted and treated well by people. And that monkey that wrote out ‘Macbeth’ would become a dazzling star—even the room owner wouldn’t dare discard it.”
After hearing this, the Man-Snake fell silent, feeling that this path seemed a bit too difficult.
“The room owner can distinguish whether a monkey has written out ‘Macbeth,’ which means he knows the content and writing style of ‘Macbeth,'” Chen Junnan said. “The monkeys can start by learning human language and ultimately understand the room owner’s purpose, then perfectly replicate ‘Macbeth’ according to his instructions.”
“Wait a minute…” The Man-Snake paused.
“Snake Brother, don’t you think that rather than having infinite monkeys type on keyboards for infinite time, it would be easier to have them learn human language in finite time?”
