Synopsis:
In the sixth year of the Wude era of the Tang Dynasty, a mysterious monk visited the county office in Huoyi, Hedong Circuit. The county magistrate, Cui Jue, immediately hanged himself. What was originally an unusual incident also gave rise to strange tales.
Legend says that Cui Jue had entered the Ni Li Prison and became a judge, judging good and punishing evil, overseeing the cycle of reincarnation.
Several years later, the eminent monk Xuanzang came to Huoyi in search of his elder brother, and became deeply trapped in a bewildering situation. The ghosts of the county office were not ghosts, and the schemers were not human.
The Judge’s Temple had become a place of evil, while Xingtang Temple resembled a den of tigers and wolves. The truth was elusive, and deception confusing.
Meanwhile, Emperor Li Shimin toured Huoyi and stayed at Xingtang Temple, but encountered his elder brother—already dead in the Xuanwu Gate Incident—lodging complaints in the underworld, summoning the agents of inevitable death…
Hell is created by humans; demons dwell in the human heart. One may escape the three thousand levels of Ni Li Prison, but no one can escape the mountains of knives and seas of fire in their own mind.
