195: Between Ambition and Pragmatism

The Du family members were certainly dissatisfied with this inheritance distribution plan, but after hearing Lawyer Cheng’s “advice” and seeing Du Zhaohui’s smiling face, they felt chills down their spines.

What good would their dissatisfaction do?

They couldn’t afford to provoke Du Zhaohui!

Du Zhaohui wasn’t like Tang Yuanyue of Yuhua – Tang Yuanyue could accept his brothers suing him for family assets. Tang Yuanyue was refined, but Du Zhaohui –

Du Zhaohui was delighted. He knew these Du family members were cursing him in their hearts but didn’t dare speak up. Seeing their frustration gave him immense satisfaction!

Du Chengrong was soon given a grand funeral. Outsiders thought the Du family would cause a scene, but surprisingly, the entire Du family was remarkably harmonious regarding the inheritance distribution. With no inheritance disputes erupting, Hong Kong media could only dig up Du Chengrong’s romantic past once again.

Some women even emerged with children, claiming affairs with Mr. Du and demanding inheritance shares. Du Zhaohui couldn’t be bothered to deal with them.

If they were truly the old man’s illegitimate children, the old man wouldn’t have left them anything.

He didn’t believe any woman who secretly bore the old man’s child would raise it quietly on her own.

Even if such fools existed, Du Zhaohui didn’t need to intervene. His inherited assets couldn’t be challenged. Those questioning the inheritance distribution could go to the second or third family, or even the fourth family that had no adults to make decisions – as long as these people agreed to acknowledge the “illegitimate children,” Du Zhaohui didn’t mind having more brothers or sisters since the other three families would have to pay for their upkeep anyway.

Who would acknowledge them?

The inherited assets were already considered too little, and no one in the Du family was charitable enough to spare any for illegitimate children.

Second Lady was the first to snap at reporters:

“Mr. Du was a responsible person who would never allow his flesh and blood to be abandoned. People are jumping out to damage his reputation right after his death – do they think the Du family is powerless now?”

These were just minor ripples.

Perhaps Hong Kong citizens were so accustomed to Du Chengrong’s romantic affairs that they found the Second Lady’s words reasonable – after all, Mr. Du could certainly afford to raise children; if he had illegitimate children, he would have brought them home to raise.

The Du family had always been creating news for Hong Kong citizens. Nothing strange was too strange anymore – it just provided more dinner table gossip.

Kowloon Walled City.

Recently, there were rumors that the Hong Kong government would demolish the Kowloon Walled City.

The residents weren’t willing.

They weren’t thinking about relocation compensation, but rather about losing their sanctuary. Many were criminals who had nowhere else to go after committing crimes, and in Kowloon Walled City, they could still bully those weaker than them… A very small portion of residents who were oppressed by the Walled City’s powers longed for its demolition.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of Kowloon Walled City residents opposed it. Though demolition plans existed, they could never be carried out. Government officials were blocked from entering.

Many low-class prostitutes in the Walled City were controlled by others, serving clients while surrendering most of their meager earnings, and living truly difficult lives.

Xia Ziyu’s income wasn’t taken by anyone, but she could never leave Kowloon Walled City.

Because this was Du Chengrong’s order!

Xia Ziyu’s days were getting harder. She had contracted an illness that went untreated, with obvious symptoms appearing on her body. Men were disgusted and unwilling to touch her.

With fewer clients, life naturally became harder.

Xia Ziyu hoped for the Walled City’s demolition – if it was demolished, she could leave. She was heaven’s chosen one; she could still turn her life around!

But reality repeatedly disappointed her.

The Walled City couldn’t be demolished.

The son she had painstakingly given birth to was taken away without a trace – she didn’t know if he was dead or alive.

When news of Du Chengrong’s death reached the Walled City, Xia Ziyu was overjoyed that this devil had finally died but then became afraid… She feared Du Chengrong had ordered someone to kill her before his death.

She overthought it. Even in ancient times, women who followed emperors in death were favored during their lifetime. Du Chengrong would consider it too dirty to have Xia Ziyu follow him in death!

But Du Chengrong’s death indeed impacted Xia Ziyu’s life.

Du Chengrong had ordered his subordinates to watch Xia Ziyu, not letting her die easily, at least not before him.

After Du Chengrong’s death, while the order keeping Xia Ziyu in the Walled City remained, the order to prevent her death became ineffective.

Xia Ziyu thought her years in the Walled City had been miserable, but she was wrong!

Before, she had at least been self-employed, with no one taking her earnings.

After Du Chengrong’s death, she immediately became a low-class prostitute controlled by the Walled City’s dark forces. She received no money from clients and was beaten if disobedient. Xia Ziyu gradually became numb.

Her belief in being heaven’s chosen one wavered.

Heaven’s chosen one wouldn’t suffer like this.

Even if the Walled City would be demolished one day, she wouldn’t live to see it.

Xia Ziyu finally recognized or finally admitted this reality.

People with hope could persist in conviction, but without hope, Xia Ziyu’s body rapidly deteriorated. Shortly after Du Chengrong’s death, she entered her final moments.

She realized she wasn’t heaven’s chosen one.

But she didn’t think she had done anything wrong.

If others had gotten a chance to return, they would have done the same!

Yes, she hadn’t done wrong – she just wanted a good life, what was wrong with that?

Xia Ziyu died with eyes wide open, filled with unwillingness as she took her last breath.

After her death, someone handled her affairs… Xia Ziyu’s body was hastily cremated, burned to ashes, and scattered in the Walled City’s sewers.

“Du Chengrong is dead.”

“The Hong Kong Du Chengrong, the rich old man Xia Ziyu married!”

Wang Jingui brought the newspaper close to her daughter Xia Hongxia.

Xia Hongxia impatiently waved her hand, “So what if he’s dead? Why do you always care about these people? Xia Ziyu died long ago, Hong Kong’s rich people have nothing to do with us!”

Wang Jingui awkwardly put down the newspaper.

Xia Hongxia was pregnant and very temperamental now, so Wang Jingui wisely avoided provoking her.

For Xia Hongxia, whether Hong Kong tycoons lived or died truly didn’t matter to her. Fortunately, she had been clear-minded enough to stay away from Xia Ziyu and Xia Xiaolan – if you can’t fight them, you can only avoid them.

How glamorous was Xia Ziyu back then?

Yet she still died early!

Though she hadn’t lived the life Xia Ziyu had, she was still alive and well now.

Xia Hongxia married in February this year and immediately became pregnant. She was now experiencing severe morning sickness and couldn’t even approach the stove. Forget about cooking – just smelling the cooking fumes made her vomit.

She was only a year younger than Xia Xiaolan, exactly 24 this year.

For a rural woman with only a middle school education and no formal job, getting married at 24 was relatively late.

If Xia Hongxia’s entire family hadn’t left their hometown, she would have been gossiped about long ago.

The small restaurant business was booming, and Xia Hongxia had earned quite a bit. Though she couldn’t afford commercial housing, old single-story houses were within her means. Xia Hongxia bought one whenever she had money, slowly acquiring an entire small courtyard like a hamster hoarding food.

Though still registered as a rural resident from another region, she had indeed found a foothold in Shenzhen. Just as men with houses didn’t worry about finding wives, women with houses were similar – there were quite a few potential matches introduced to her.

She originally preferred refined, educated men, but most matching suitors who met her conditions looked down on her.

What did it matter that she earned well? She wasn’t pretty enough, and others criticized her low education and rural household registration from another region.

One man, himself an uncontracted temporary worker at a factory, actually considered Xia Hongxia’s self-employment embarrassing.

He also said he would live in Xia Hongxia’s house after marriage, while constantly worrying that the family houses would be inherited by Xia Hongxia’s two brothers.

Finally, Xia Hongxia lost her temper too, putting her hands on her hips and driving out the presumptuous, meddlesome suitor:

“Living in a woman’s house means marrying into her family, yet you still have so much to say? Get out, get the hell out!”
