Chapter 1972: Even Bad Deeds Done Poorly, What a Disappointment!

“What? She still didn’t die?” Liu Keying gritted her teeth.

Liu Tianquan also felt unlucky. “I heard she’s very sensitive to medicine, and it took effect quickly, but the doctors managed to save her. However, with all this trauma, the flesh in her belly was naturally lost – so we achieved half our goal.”

“I don’t want half-measures! I want her dead. Her being alive is an eyesore – what use is just a miscarriage? If she could get pregnant this time, she can get pregnant again!”

“Keying, don’t get agitated. We can’t make another move now – Master Du has returned to Hong Kong!”

Making another attempt would risk getting caught. Liu Tianquan only knew that Xia Ziyu’s existence affected his sister’s favored status, which indirectly impacted his interests. But he didn’t possess the uniquely feminine jealousy of Liu Keying, so he could still maintain his rationality.

Xia Ziyu’s survival deeply disappointed Liu Keying.

Du Zhaohui, upon hearing the news, was even more disappointed. He complained to Ah Hua:

“You know why I’ve always looked down on the Liu siblings? Look at them – they can’t even do evil properly. Yet they think they can compete with me?”

He had thought Liu Keying would wait until the news of Xia Ziyu’s glamorous appearance at the club’s opening ceremony was reported before making her move.

Unexpectedly, Liu Keying had arranged for people to act during the interview.

When one collision failed to make Xia Ziyu miscarry, they sent someone to the hospital to finish the job.

After all that effort, Xia Ziyu still survived. Du Zhaohui was utterly disappointed in the Liu siblings’ capabilities. Over the years, they had only shown real effort in their few attempts against him.

Why were they so full of mistakes when it came to Xia Ziyu?

Seeing his young master eager to step in and deliver the final blow, Ah Hua broke into a cold sweat.

“Young Master—”

Please don’t act rashly.

Du Zhaohui rolled his eyes. “You don’t need to remind me. The old man’s back in Hong Kong – haven’t you noticed even Liu Keying doesn’t dare make another move?”

Xia Ziyu had survived but lost the child. Now she would need to recover physically while keeping up her spirits to please the old man – she’d have to behave for several months. Du Zhaohui wanted to share this good news with Xia Xiaolan but feared she would find him cruel.

Never mind, he’d hold back and mention it casually next time.

After all, he wasn’t the one who caused Xia Ziyu to lose her child, nor did he send someone to switch her medicine. He hadn’t played the villain!

“Master Du…”

After struggling between life and death, Xia Ziyu survived.

When she awoke, she saw Du Chengrong.

Xia Ziyu immediately broke into tears of distress.

“Master Du, we lost our child. It’s all my fault – I wasn’t capable enough to protect him—”

Xia Ziyu’s teeth chattered as she spoke.

She was truly frightened.

With the child gone, she had lost her leverage.

If that wasn’t serious enough, she had nearly lost her life as well. Xia Ziyu finally understood the dangers that accompanied the Du family’s wealth. After such misfortune, the only thing she couldn’t afford to lose was Du Chengrong’s affection.

Xia Ziyu desperately sought Du Chengrong’s sympathy.

Du Chengrong stared at her for a long while, his thoughts unreadable. After some time, he finally touched her forehead:

“It was an accident. It’s good that you’re safe. Once you recover, we can have another child.”

“No, this wasn’t an accident. Someone pushed me, and someone tampered with my medicine – I heard it all. That nurse – did you catch that nurse?”

Useless – the bodyguards were all useless.

They let anyone enter her hospital room.

They allowed someone to add lethal medicine to her IV bag.

She had heard it all.

Don’t try to hide it from her.

Xia Ziyu’s face showed fear. “Who wanted to kill me, Master Du? Was it because I attended the opening ceremony and upset someone? If that’s the case, why didn’t they come after me directly? Why target my child? It was just a four-month-old flesh and blood – who could it have offended…”

It was Du Zhaohui.

It must have been Du Zhaohui.

At the opening ceremony, she had felt triumphant when she entered with an invitation while Du Zhaohui had to rely on others to get in!

In the high-level VIP lounge, she felt elated seeing Du Zhaohui’s anger while she chatted pleasantly with Mr. Yong from Singapore!

But she never imagined Du Zhaohui’s revenge would be so vicious.

Du Zhaohui held significant weight in Du Chengrong’s heart.

One was a capable son of over twenty years, while the other was just a mass of flesh in the womb, with barely any father-child bond formed. Xia Ziyu knew that even if Du Zhaohui was responsible, Du Chengrong would likely downplay the matter!

But she couldn’t help her hatred.

Whether or not she could shake Du Zhaohui’s position, she couldn’t let this matter pass easily. She wanted to plant a thorn in Du Chengrong’s heart, to make him remember forever!

“What are you trying to say? You think Zhaohui harmed you?”

Du Chengrong leaned down to tuck in her blanket, showing consideration, but his words weren’t what Xia Ziyu wanted to hear:

“It wasn’t Zhaohui.”

“That child doesn’t do such things anymore.”

People grow and change.

When violence and aggression fail to achieve goals, foolish people become more extreme, while clever ones change their strategies.

Du Chengrong had once thought his eldest son was the former.

He had watched Du Zhaohui like a trapped beast, hurting himself in his struggles, feeling more disappointment than pity.

Whether he was deliberately living wild to deceive the Du family or was naturally dissolute didn’t matter – a man’s romantic affairs weren’t important, what mattered was capability!

However, since Du Zhaohui had voluntarily proposed expanding business in mainland China, Du Chengrong noticed his eldest son was gradually changing – from foolish to clever, understanding that playing the role of a filial son to gain favor was useless. To stand out among the Du family children and earn his attention, the ability was what ultimately mattered.

So it wasn’t Zhaohui.

Of course, Zhaohui was dissatisfied with his favoring Xia Ziyu, but Zhaohui had learned patience and learned to distinguish between primary and secondary conflicts.

Killing Xia Ziyu would only vent frustration.

But it would affect Zhaohui’s fight for the family business – Du Chengrong didn’t believe his eldest son would make such a losing deal.

Of course, adding fuel to the fire was inevitable.

Xia Ziyu didn’t believe his judgment but didn’t argue, silently closing her mouth instead.

This was another aspect of Xia Ziyu that pleased Du Chengrong.

Xia Ziyu was pragmatic, knowing who held the real power. Regardless of her feelings, if something would displease him, she would never mention it again. Even Liu Keying couldn’t manage this – she had once trembled in fear, putting his preferences first, but later grew bolder, frantically testing his bottom line… In the end, it was greed clouding wisdom. After being favored for over ten years, she wanted even more!

“You think I’m making excuses for Zhaohui? Never mind, rest for a few days. I’ll catch who harmed you and let you watch the interrogation yourself.”

Du Chengrong spoke with certainty, making Xia Ziyu uncertain.

Would Du Chengrong lie to her?

There seemed no point in lying, but if it wasn’t Du Zhaohui, who could it be?
