Chapter 120: Gradual Progress

The Princess Consort of Fen smiled coldly at Meng Ruren. “What’s the matter? Are you dissatisfied? Do you think I’m wrong to reprimand you?”

Most present knew the Princess Consort’s temperament well. She was a controversial figure. As she often said, she came from a farming family. Yet she not only captivated the Prince of Fen, who made her his primary consort, but after several of her outbursts, she had eliminated all the other consorts and concubines from the princely mansion.

In earlier years when the Prince of Fen lacked influence, she remained outspoken. Known for her hot temper, bluntness, and meddling, she often offended others, causing difficulties for the Prince. Yet, unexpectedly, this kept the couple out of the succession struggles. Now, the Prince of Fen was the Emperor’s only royal uncle and highly respected. Given her seniority and unyielding nature, even the Emperor gave her some leeway. So her scolding a prince’s concubine was hardly unusual, especially since she was in the right.

Recognizing the situation, Meng Ruren’s expression changed rapidly. She took a deep breath, suppressing her resentment, and said submissively, “The Princess Consort is right to admonish me. Receiving your guidance is a blessing I couldn’t ask for. I was confused and misunderstood the situation, leading to my foolish actions. Thankfully, it didn’t result in serious consequences. Please give me a chance to apologize to Sister He.” She then bowed deeply to the Princess Consort.

The Princess Consort had anticipated this response and showed no surprise. She sighed, her anger gradually subsiding. “Enough. I didn’t want to meddle and make myself disliked. But I can’t bear to see this young friend suffer any wrongdoing. Since it was a misunderstanding, your apology will suffice. However, don’t make the same mistake again, or I won’t be so forgiving.”

To Meng Ruren, this was a warning not to trouble Mudan again. People are strange – had the Princess Consort spoken to her privately, she might have dismissed it as mere courtesy. But the Princess Consort’s public outburst made her realize Mudan’s importance to her, prompting caution in future actions.

After some thought, Meng Ruren smiled and said, “I wouldn’t dare do it again. Sister He is like my own sister now. I won’t let anyone mistreat her.” She then took Mudan’s hand affectionately and said, “Sister He, please forgive my mistake. Don’t hold it against me.”

Mudan thought silently that they were now enemies, and Meng Ruren likely hated her deeply. To avoid offending Meng Ruren, she’d have to submit to her whims, which was inevitable sooner or later. So why worry about when? She returned the courtesy, seemingly putting the matter to rest.

Qiu Manniang and others, who had been watching, only knew that Meng Ruren had bullied Mudan but didn’t understand the details. Seeing them reconcile, they came over to ask what had happened.

Meng Ruren was too embarrassed to explain and just smiled silently. Mudan, of course, wouldn’t foolishly reveal that Meng Ruren had tried to send her to Prince Ning as a concubine, so she simply said, “It was just a small misunderstanding. Let’s not dwell on it.”

Lady Bai smiled slightly. “Why discuss such things? Let’s continue with our gathering.” Soon, the sound of pipa filled the air, beautiful young women began to dance, and poetry-loving Daoist nuns joined in the festivities. The earlier unpleasantness seemed to vanish amid the fragrance of flowers, melodious music, and poetic exchanges.

Meng Ruren’s patience was remarkable. She endured until the end of the gathering before rising to bid farewell to everyone, appearing reluctant to leave. As the Princess Consort of Fen showed no sign of leaving, Lady Bai stayed behind with Mudan. Once most guests had departed, Mudan approached the Princess Consort to express her gratitude.

The Princess Consort felt the calluses on Mudan’s palm and asked, “I heard your mother’s family is wealthy, with numerous servants. Why do they let you endure such hardship? If you don’t want to be a concubine, why not find a good husband?”

Mudan smiled, “They’re reluctant to let me go. But I don’t want to be idle, so they allow me this. As for finding someone, it’s not that simple.”

The Princess Consort released her hand and said seriously, “I heard you wanted to protest in the streets and even considered dying at Prince Ning’s gate. Don’t you realize this might be insignificant to the Prince’s household? They might even accuse you of overreacting. Do you know how many similar situations exist in this world?”

Mudan paused before replying, “I know.” She understood that to some, she was as insignificant as dirt, but even small people deserved dignity. Defending one’s dignity shouldn’t be questionable.

The Princess Consort raised an eyebrow. “You know? You know you might die in vain, yet you’d still do it?”

Mudan didn’t feel the need to discuss dignity with the Princess Consort. She said softly, “I wouldn’t take that step unless necessary. But if it came to that… someone would know the truth, despite the rumors.”

The Princess Consort smiled slightly. “You don’t need to die. You’re fortunate. Meng Ruren won’t dare trouble you again, and I believe such incidents won’t happen after this.” Her earlier public dismissal of the matter was to save face for Prince Ning’s household, but she intended to inform the Prince of this incident.

“This is all thanks to your kindness, Princess Consort,” Lady Bai stepped forward, bowing and smiling. “Princess Consort, may I bring her to your future banquets?”

The Princess Consort glanced at Mudan. “Of course. Even without a banquet, you can bring her to visit.”

Lady Bai was overjoyed. Seeing Mudan standing quietly without particular excitement, she tugged at her anxiously. Mudan didn’t yet realize the significance of this invitation. Free access to the Prince of Fen’s residence meant she would be the Princess Consort’s honored guest, bringing numerous benefits. Not only would people like Meng Ruren no longer dare to bully her, but it would also greatly facilitate her peony business.

At this moment, Mudan didn’t display a businesswoman’s acumen. Instead, she was lost in thought about how to face Jiang Changyang again. Pulled back to reality by Lady Bai, she bowed to the Princess Consort, “Thank you, Princess Consort.”

Seeing her somewhat dazed expression, the Princess Consort smiled. “Alright, I’m just fulfilling a request. You may go now.”

Leaving Fuyu Temple, Mudan instructed Shuer to report back home: “Go back and let them know not to worry. See if Lady Li is still there and inform her; if she’s gone home, send someone to notify her. I’ll return later.”

Lady Bai smiled, “It seems you’re not planning to accompany me anywhere. Perhaps you want me to accompany you to Qujiang Pool and Furong Garden?”

Mudan smiled, “If you have time.”

Lady Bai sighed, “I’ll see this through. I’ll accompany you.”

They smiled at each other and headed to Qujiang Pool. Along the way, Lady Bai detailed the Princess Consort’s story, finally sighing, “Those who dislike her often mock her behind her back, saying everything she has is because of the Prince of Fen. I disagree. Isn’t it enough that she has earned the Prince’s complete trust? Who else could she rely on but herself? Moreover, the fact that they were the only couple to emerge unscathed speaks volumes. In my life, I admire two people the most: her and Madam Wang, Jiang Dalang’s mother.”

Mudan couldn’t help but glance at Lady Bai. These two women – one who gained her husband’s complete love and trust, and another who resolutely left her high-ranking husband – both lived life to the fullest.

Lady Bai touched her face and smiled gently. “Only those who can’t live life to the fullest envy those who can.” She looked brightly at Mudan. “I hope you can live life to the fullest too.”

Mudan replied seriously, “I will.”

When they arrived at Jiang Changyang’s home, Nianyu went forward to knock and state their purpose. Soon, Wu San rushed out excitedly, though it wasn’t clear why he was so happy. “Rare guests, rare guests! Please come in. The young master will be here shortly.”

Seeing Mudan’s solemn expression, Lady Bai gently tugged her sleeve and whispered, “Don’t be afraid. If I, the one who revealed the secret, am not afraid, what do you have to fear?”

Mudan smiled at this and looked at Wu San, who kept stealing glances at her. “Manager Wu, thank you. Everything has been resolved.”

Wu San smiled, his eyes nearly disappearing. “You’re welcome, you’re welcome. It’s what I should do.” Realizing he might have said too much, he closed his mouth tightly, just smiling.

Mudan used to find his antics amusing, but now she felt a strange sensation. She forced a smile and lowered her head silently.

Wu San led them into the hall and ordered tea to be served. Just as they picked up their tea cups, Jiang Changyang entered. He greeted Lady Bai and Mudan naturally. Guessing that the secret was out, he spoke directly, “You’ve just come from Fuyu Temple? How did things go?”

Lady Bai quickly smiled and said, “The Princess Consort of Fen is as formidable as ever. Meng Ruren returned the pearls and apologized. I don’t think she’ll cause trouble again. I’m here to apologize – Mudan insisted on thanking her helper, and I’m soft-hearted, so I couldn’t help but tell her.”

Jiang Changyang lowered his eyes and smiled, “That’s good.” It wasn’t clear if he meant it was good that the Princess Consort had resolved the issue, or that Lady Bai had told Mudan about his help.

Lady Bai sat for a while longer, then quietly asked a maid to show her the way, saying she needed to use the facilities, leaving Mudan and Jiang Changyang to talk.

Mudan stood and bowed to Jiang Changyang, “You’ve helped me multiple times. I don’t know how to repay you and feel very uneasy about it.”

Jiang Changyang was silent for a moment, then said, “You don’t need to dwell on it or feel burdened. I simply did what I thought was right. I don’t expect repayment.”

Seeing Mudan’s doubtful expression, he smiled, “My mother had a difficult early life. When we were in trouble, many people helped us. She often told me that if you owe someone a favor, you should repay it, even if not to the same person. When I encounter situations, I act. For instance, you and Yuan Shijiu are friends I believe are worth helping.”

By comparing her to Yuan Shijiu, he was implying they were both his friends. Mudan couldn’t find words, feeling she had misjudged his intentions or been presumptuous. After a long silence, she smiled, “I’ve heard a little about your mother. They say she’s remarkable.”

Seeing her change the subject, Jiang Changyang inwardly sighed with relief. His smile became more natural, and he proudly said, “Of course, my mother is indeed remarkable. She dared to lead me alone across thousands of miles, observing seas and treading deserts. When we had money, she’d spend lavishly on delicacies; when we had none, she could turn wild vegetables into delicious meals…”

Jiang Changyang’s expression softened as if lost in fond memories. He even licked his lips slightly, as if savoring those tastes.

Seeing his entranced look, Mudan asked curiously, “Was it that good?” She wondered if Madam Wang had also been in business at some point.

Jiang Changyang touched his forehead, smiling lightly, “I might be exaggerating a bit. Others might not find it so delicious, maybe even considering it too fishy. But in my memory, when we were starving, a soup made from small wild fish and vegetables from mountain streams, with just a pinch of salt, was indeed a rare delicacy.”

Mudan couldn’t help saying, “It sounds wonderful, but the hardships must have been beyond imagination.”

Jiang Changyang replied, “Yes, I cried and complained when I was young. But looking back as an adult, it was good. At least in this life, even if I’m penniless or have nothing to eat, I won’t starve if left alone in the wilderness.”

His expression was pleasant, both gentle and filled with strong confidence. Mudan felt infected by his emotions. She tentatively asked softly, “Why did you have to leave? Of course, if you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. I’m just… a bit curious. Lady Bai said your mother is one of the people she admires and respects most in her life.”

Jiang Changyang looked up at Mudan and calmly said, “If you’re interested, there’s no reason not to tell you. I suppose you already know, that my mother was once the wife of Duke Zhu. Later, the Emperor granted Duke Zhu another wife, both with equal status as Duchess. Duke Zhu accepted, but my mother didn’t. She proposed a divorce. Duke Zhu refused, the Emperor refused, and even my maternal family refused. Everyone opposed it, but she still managed to do it.” He paused, looking at Mudan with gentle eyes, “This situation was somewhat similar to your past.”

Mudan smiled slightly, “It is a bit similar. But she was much stronger than me and had it much harder.” She thought to herself that they had once been a loving couple, but suddenly faced a powerful third party. When Madam Wang left, it must have been out of utter heartbreak. In contrast, when Mudan left, she felt only joy and encouragement. These were two entirely different feelings. Yet Madam Wang left gracefully, lived gracefully, and raised her son well – not as an angel of vengeance, but as a normal person. That was quite remarkable.

Jiang Changyang smiled, “It was indeed very difficult. My mother, she…” As he was speaking, Wu San came in and whispered something in his ear. Lady Bai also returned, and seeing this, asked, “Chengfeng, do you have some business to attend to?”

Jiang Changyang replied reluctantly, “There’s something I must deal with immediately.”

Mudan quickly stood up, “It’s alright, please attend to your business.”

Jiang Changyang smiled, “Let me see you out.” But he looked at Mudan and said, “If it’s convenient for you, I’d like to boldly request your help in grafting a ‘What-if’ peony for my mother’s birthday next year. We can discuss the price. I wonder if that’s possible for you…”

Mudan was stunned for a moment, then nodded rapidly, “It’s possible. As for the price, there’s no need to mention it.”

Jiang Changyang didn’t discuss the price further, only asking, “Should we graft it at your place, or with the peonies I have here? Which would be best?”

Mudan replied, “The plants to be grafted need to be prepared in advance and carefully managed afterward. The ones here aren’t suitable. After the Mid-Autumn Festival, I’ll invite you to my estate first. You can choose a few varieties, and then I’ll graft them.”

Jiang Changyang smiled slightly and saw Mudan and Lady Bai out. As he turned to instruct Wu San, he noticed Wu San looking at him with a sly expression. Slightly annoyed, he asked, “What are you looking at?”

Wu San flattered, “I’m just happy for you, young master. Congratulations on being able to offer a live ‘What-if’ peony to the madam as a filial gift. It’s not easy to come by. Actually, after helping Miss He, you should always ask for some thanks like this. Otherwise, she might not ask for your help next time. When you choose the flowers, make sure to pick plenty of good ones. Let her put in more effort and time; otherwise, it’s not worth it.”

“I hope she won’t need my help like this again. What do you mean by ‘worth it’? Don’t talk nonsense,” Jiang Changyang glared at Wu San, but couldn’t help smiling. He turned to meet another group of guests, his mood very good that day.

Mudan bid farewell to Lady Bai and returned to Xuanping Ward. Before reaching home, she saw Zhang Wulang walking unsteadily towards her. She quickly dismounted and greeted him respectfully. Zhang Wulang returned the greeting and said, “I went to your house this morning to inquire about your situation. I heard you went out with a friend to resolve some issues. I wonder if everything has been settled satisfactorily?”

Mudan smiled, “Thank you for your concern, Brother Zhang. Everything went smoothly, and it should be resolved now.”

Zhang Wulang smiled like a child, his leopard-like eyes narrowing to slits, “That’s wonderful. Congratulations, Sister Mudan.”

Mudan said, “Since you’re here, Brother Zhang, please come in for a seat. My father is probably home and can keep you company for a drink.”

But Zhang Wulang waved his hand, “No need to trouble yourself. I just came to ask. Knowing all is well is enough. I have some fighting cocks to tend to; everyone’s waiting.” With that, he left without looking back.

Mudan returned home and reported the details of the incident to He Zhizhong, Madam Cen, and others. When she mentioned that Jiang Changyang had helped again, He Zhizhong and Madam Cen exchanged a glance, both seeing doubt and unease in each other’s eyes.

After a night of deep consideration, He Zhizhong decided to personally thank Jiang Changyang. After all, for such a significant matter, it would be improper for him as the head of the family not to pay a visit of gratitude. Moreover, he was set to go to sea with his eldest son after the festival, and he needed to be clear about certain things. However, he went twice and found Jiang Changyang absent both times. The doorkeeper said Jiang Changyang had gone out on business and might not return until after the Mid-Autumn Festival.

He Zhizhong suspected Jiang Changyang was deliberately avoiding him and went to ask Mudan indirectly. Mudan was planning to transplant the purple-spotted peony to Fang Garden after the Mid-Autumn Festival. Hearing He Zhizhong’s words, she said casually, “After the Mid-Autumn Festival, I’ll be staying at the estate for a while, firstly to tend to those flowers, and secondly to help him graft a flower. I’ll need to invite him over to select the variety. If you want to thank him, Father, you can come along with me. You haven’t been to Fang Garden for a long time. It’s starting to take shape now. When you and my brothers return from the sea, you won’t see it in its current state anymore.”

He Zhizhong heard this and smiled, “Are you sure he’ll come then?”

Mudan asked puzzlingly, “He’s never gone back on his word. This flower is for his mother’s birthday, which is important. He’ll certainly come.”

He Zhizhong said, “Mudan, how do you view this matter?”

Mudan was silent for a long time before saying, “He said he considers me a friend, like Yuan Shijiu. He also said my situation was a bit like his mother’s.”

He Zhizhong frowned, “Do you think so too?”

Mudan pursed her lips, “How else should I think? He hasn’t done anything improper now. We’ve already accepted his kindness; we can’t take it back. In any case, I’ll be careful. The timing wasn’t right that day, and some things couldn’t be said too directly. Anyway, I did say I couldn’t repay him.”

He Zhizhong laughed, “You silly girl.”

Mudan looked at He Zhizhong with wide eyes, “I’m not silly. I just can’t find a better way.” Jiang Changyang seemed normal now. If she kept dwelling on it, she would be the abnormal one. It was better to play dumb.

He Zhizhong sighed, “If… what are your thoughts?”

Mudan lowered her head and said seriously, “There’s no ‘if’ for now. Father, don’t worry. Your daughter knows her limits.” Jiang Changyang was quite good, and with such a free-spirited mother, he couldn’t escape his identity as the eldest son of Duke Zhu. The gap between them was still quite large. If he wasn’t what she needed, if he couldn’t be what she wanted, it would all be in vain. Before anything was certain, she knew very clearly what she should do.

In the blink of an eye, the Mid-Autumn Festival arrived. To the world, the Mid-Autumn Festival held great significance. However, this year’s Mid-Autumn was overcast, with no moon to admire or worship. The He family could only sit in the hall and share a carefully prepared “moon-viewing soup” made with longan, lotus seeds, and lotus root starch. After sitting and talking for a while in the hall, they dispersed.

Early the next morning, just as He Zhizhong was about to go out, he heard that a young man surnamed Jiang had come to visit.
