When the two of them walked in, both Su Man’s father and Su Man’s mother felt briefly disoriented.
Because——
Standing together, these two were far too well matched. Like a perfectly paired couple: the man tall and handsome, the woman vivid and lovely. No matter how you looked at them, the sight was pleasing.
Su Man’s parents suddenly had a feeling not unlike that of a parent watching a beloved daughter come of age.
Su Man had always come and gone with the boy from next door. That boy wasn’t bad-looking either. How had they never had this feeling before?
Was it familiarity blindness—because they had watched the two grow up together since childhood, so they had simply gotten too used to the sight?
Su Man’s mother looked Lu Yuwen over from head to toe, then from toe to head again, and a sudden realization struck: *because the height is right!*
Su Man was naturally tall at 170 centimeters. Most young men standing next to her looked more like companions than matches. But Lu Yuwen was exactly half a head taller than Su Man.
On top of that, Su Man had her mouth drawn down in an obvious pout—clearly displeased—while Lu Yuwen wore a warm and gentle smile. It inevitably gave the impression of a gracious husband tolerating a headstrong girlfriend…
Su Man shot a sidelong glance at her mother, giving her a strange look as if asking: *what are you staring at?*
Su Man’s mother quickly reined in her imagination.
Come to think of it, it was odd. She’d only just met this Mr. Lu for the first time, yet she felt an inexplicable sense of affinity with him.
Su Man’s father said to Lu Yuwen from the hospital bed: “If it weren’t for you stepping in today, Mr. Lu, I’d have left this old life behind right here. I don’t know where you live, but once I’m well again, I’ll certainly come pay you a proper visit and thank you in person.”
Lu Yuwen smiled modestly, his voice warm: “It was nothing—I just happened to be there. Anyone else would have done the same. I’m not from Shanghai, so please don’t put it on your mind. Just focus on recovering.”
Su Man’s mother asked curiously: “Where are you from, Mr. Lu?”
Lu Yuwen answered: “Nanjing. I just arrived in Shanghai today.”
“Oh, and what brings you to Shanghai?” Su Man’s mother asked. “Sightseeing or business? Are you here alone?”
Su Man’s brow furrowed more and more. “Mom, are you conducting a census?”
Su Man’s mother gave an awkward smile, shot her daughter a look, and turned back to Lu Yuwen with a smile: “Don’t mind me, Mr. Lu. I tend to ask too many questions at my age. I was only thinking that if you’re here on business and there’s anything we can help with, we’d be happy to do our part.”
“I’m just here to have a look around.” Lu Yuwen smiled warmly and said with impeccable politeness: “You look quite young, and you carry yourself beautifully. There’s no ‘getting on in years’ about you.”
Su Man’s mother’s face burst into bloom. She beamed so widely she could barely close her mouth: “Oh, Mr. Lu, you’re too kind!”
Su Man pressed her lips together without a word, watching her mother, thinking: *he’s just being polite—how are you taking it so literally?*
Then she heard Lu Yuwen add: “Seeing how lovely Su Miss is, anyone could tell she takes after you both.”
Su Man: “……”
All right then.
Who doesn’t enjoy a kind word…
Lu Yuwen’s words clearly struck a chord with both Su Man’s mother and father. They might have been a bit bashful at compliments directed at themselves, but when it came to praise for their daughter—there was absolutely no holding back.
Su Man’s mother: “My Man Man has been just like me since she was little. Every time I took her out, the neighbors would say she looked like a little fairy!”
After a few rounds of that, she remembered the incident in the corridor and felt a little sheepish. She shifted direction: “Ahem, the child’s good in every way—just a bit of a quick temper. She didn’t frighten you, did she?”
Su Man’s father chimed in: “My daughter always goes straight to physical force without knowing her own strength. Don’t know how many people she’s gotten on the wrong side of. Truly sorry about all of it!”
Lu Yuwen recalled what had just occurred. His lips curved faintly, and he said with courteous composure: “Su Miss is genuinely different from most young women—bold and decisive. That quality is actually quite rare. Uncle and Auntie are fortunate to have a daughter like her.”
Su Man’s mother was nearly bursting with joy.
Su Man had caused trouble with her fighting since she was small, giving her parents no end of headaches. They had never heard such a comforting thing said about it!
Overcome with excitement in the moment, Su Man’s mother blurted out: “Mr. Lu, you’ve come to Shanghai alone with no one you know here. Why not have Man Man show you around? She knows every part of the city!”
