Synopsis:

The birthday party for her close friend Liu Sijia is lavishly arranged, celebrated in a brightly lit villa. Da* clasps her hands together, her radiant cheeks slightly flushed: she hopes he will come. Everyone around already knows who “he” is, and murmurs of teasing “ohs” ripple through the crowd. But whether he shows up depends entirely on his mood.*

Halfway through the party, Ban Sheng walks in carrying a cake. He snuffs out his cigarette and says simply, “Happy birthday.” Da** is overjoyed and insists on blowing out the candles and making a wish all over again.

Later, as the group is caught up in the festivities, Lin Weixia heads alone to the kitchen to help get some fruit. As she turns around, she nearly bumps into someone’s chest and instinctively steps back. Ban Sheng stands there with one hand in his pocket, slowly closing the distance. His shadow falls over her. Noticing a smudge of cream on the tip of her nose, his gaze shifts slightly. Looking at her, he asks, “Why are you flustered?”

During a grand school carnival, five of them slip away to the seaside to play a card-drawing game. Lin Weixia draws a card that lets her ask Ban Sheng a question.
