Seeing Jiang Yuan’s bewildered expression, Pei Qian felt things were going according to plan.
If Jiang Yuan had suddenly brightened up with realization, that would have been a disaster.
As long as he maintained this confused look, while the phone sales might be uncertain, the launch event would most likely be a failure.
Pei Qian had no intention of giving Jiang Yuan more opportunities to extract “success secrets” from him, so he decisively stood up: “Alright, the content for the launch event has been decided. Time to happily clock out!”
Jiang Yuan quickly said: “Uh… Mr. Pei, I applied for two hours of overtime, but only one hour has passed. It’s too quick; I’ll stay and think things through more carefully.”
Pei Qian was a bit displeased: “The overtime hours aren’t important. What’s important is how much work gets completed.”
“Even if the time isn’t up, the work is already done. Why stay here? It’s May Day—hurry back and rest!”
“The overtime pay will be the same as before, not a penny less.”
Jiang Yuan declined again: “That won’t work, Mr. Pei. I still need to sort through things. I promise I’ll leave as soon as the two hours are up!”
Seeing him so determined, Pei Qian couldn’t just force him out, especially since they had originally agreed on two hours.
With this in mind, Pei Qian compromised: “Fine then, be conscientious. Leave immediately once the two hours are up.”
He was about to leave when Jiang Yuan suddenly asked: “Mr. Pei, please wait! I have one last question!”
“For the phone’s advantages and disadvantages… should advantages come first, or disadvantages?”
Pei Qian was taken aback.
Well, well, I’m about to leave, and you’re still trying to extract information from me?
His instinct was to say “advantages first,” but he suddenly realized that wouldn’t be right.
The previous E1 phone presentation had put advantages first, and that caused a major problem!
Pei Qian carefully recalled that at the E1 phone launch event, they first discussed pricing, then Chang You had rattled off the phone’s advantages in one rapid-fire segment, and only finally mentioned the phone’s disadvantages.
But the first part had been so brilliant that the audience completely overlooked the phone’s disadvantages.
So, the same mistake absolutely couldn’t be made again!
Pei Qian immediately said: “Disadvantages first! And don’t announce the price right at the beginning. Like other launch events, save it for the end!”
Jiang Yuan’s mouth slightly opened; this was clearly not the answer he had expected.
If Mr. Pei had said “advantages first,” he could have analyzed the previous E1 phone launch event and drawn some inspiration.
But Mr. Pei saying “disadvantages first” meant completely overturning the experience from the previous launch!
Pei Qian smiled slightly. Trying to trick me? You’re still too green!
Seeing Jiang Yuan’s bewildered expression, Pei Qian was in high spirits as he left.
Watching Mr. Pei’s departing figure, Jiang Yuan furrowed his brows and began to ponder deeply about what Mr. Pei had just said.
He couldn’t make sense of it!
No matter how he thought about it, it seemed completely unreasonable.
After thinking long and hard with no breakthrough, he could only start modifying the PPT.
After making a copy of the original PPT, Jiang Yuan began to edit the content according to Mr. Pei’s requirements—removing what needed to be removed, merging what needed to be merged, and reserving enough pages for what needed to be expanded.
After about ten minutes of simple adjustments, Jiang Yuan had changed the basic framework of the PPT. The original dozens of pages had been cut by nearly half.
The extensive introduction of Otto OS’s evolution over the past year—all cut; the detailed introduction of AEEIS artificial intelligence technology’s application in the phone, as well as the AEEIS intelligent argument machine—also all cut. Instead, the phone’s disadvantages, the immaturity of the new technologies applied, all needed extensive coverage.
Looking at the entire PPT, the phone’s advantages had all been condensed into a single page, while the disadvantages took up at least a dozen pages.
Jiang Yuan was depressed.
Actually, the previous E1 phone launch event PPT had roughly the same structure, but these two phones were very different.
The E1 phone was a traditional phone with solid advantages like powerful configuration, long battery life, excellent supporting services, and so on.
These advantages, once listed, could be directly perceived by consumers.
Then when introducing the E1 phone’s disadvantages, because the advantages were so prominent, the disadvantages seemed insignificant, so the audience could accept them.
But the G1 phone was completely different.
It was a phone utilizing many new technologies—one could say it wasn’t very practical but had strong exploratory value.
Unlike the E1 phone, the G1 phone’s advantages weren’t easily perceived, but its disadvantages were quite tangible.
For example, the full-screen technology, for most people, just meant the screen was slightly larger and the appearance was more attractive, but this wasn’t a particularly strong perception.
But the problems brought by full-screen technology were that the pop-up camera occupied more internal space in the phone, making the phone bigger, worsening heat dissipation, reducing water and dust resistance, and even degrading call quality.
And these would concretely affect the customer’s user experience.
So if they took the same approach with the G1 phone, customers wouldn’t see these disadvantages as minor—they would feel these disadvantages completely negated the previous advantages.
Moreover, the previous launch event had put the pricing segment at the very beginning. If they used the same approach this year, it wouldn’t have the same effect as last year. It might even backfire and provoke consumer dissatisfaction.
Because last year’s launch event was like a novelty act, and you can’t pull the same trick twice—it would be outdated and become a stale joke.
So no matter how Jiang Yuan thought about it, the launch event content didn’t seem right.
“Where exactly is the problem?”
“Seeing Mr. Pei’s confident demeanor, he obviously has something up his sleeve. But why can’t I grasp Mr. Pei’s thinking…”
“Stay calm. At this moment, I mustn’t rush. I need to slowly analyze Mr. Pei’s intentions.”
“…”
“Mr. Pei said to put the phone’s disadvantages up front.”
“And don’t put the pricing segment at the very beginning either; like other phone launch events, put it at the end.”
“Could Mr. Pei mean the launch should be mediocre like other phone events? Impossible. Mr. Pei just told me this is a phone full of innovative spirit, so the launch event should also be full of innovation!”
“Could it be… that putting disadvantages first is the key?”
“Repeatedly discussing the disadvantages of each new technology, even taking up most of the launch event, and only briefly mentioning the advantages at the end, followed by the pricing segment…”
“I understand now!”
After rearranging the PPT order and reviewing it twice, Jiang Yuan suddenly brightened up, grasping Mr. Pei’s intention!
“If we first talk about the disadvantages of these new technologies, and do so in detail and repeatedly, what effect will it create? It will make the audience believe that this phone’s development difficulty is very high, that these new technologies aren’t very practical yet, and that the cost is very high—probably all technology with no product, or just a concept phone that can’t be mass-produced.”
“But in reality, these technologies can already be mass-produced. Other phone manufacturers are also trying to use them, just not as boldly as us. They’re only experimenting with a small portion of these technologies, while we’ve gone all in.”
“So, I shouldn’t call this a phone launch event, but rather a ‘New Technology Exchange and Sharing Session’!”
“This way, the audience won’t think I’m here to sell phones and won’t have any expectations. They’ll just think these are some very cutting-edge, still immature technologies in the phone industry, probably without even a prototype.”
“But at the end, the pricing segment will appear on the screen, making them instantly realize that these many high-difficulty technologies can already be mass-produced and are available for purchase!”
“Then, this surprise will completely wash away the impression left by the phone’s various disadvantages. Because it’s an exploratory concept phone, customers will be much more tolerant.”
“And because of this created sense of surprise, customers won’t feel the price is particularly expensive.”
“In other words, for the same product, different methods and angles of introduction can produce completely different effects!”
“This must be the effect Mr. Pei wants to achieve!”
Jiang Yuan suddenly had an epiphany—everything from before now made sense!
He looked at his watch. From when Mr. Pei arrived until now, exactly two hours had passed, right on the dot.
“Perfect!”
“After the holiday, I’ll have someone revise the PPT and rush to prepare for the launch event. I can’t disappoint Mr. Pei!”
