Chapter 1128: The VR Headset Samples Are Ready!

Pei Qian had just finished washing up when his phone rang.

Looking at the caller ID, it was Meng Chang.

“Hmm?”

Pei Qian was puzzled. Why would Meng Chang actively contact him?

Although it was almost the end of the month, hadn’t Meng Chang already given up on his commission for this month?

Even if it was about the new promotional strategy, shouldn’t that be considered next month?

After thinking for a moment, Pei Qian still answered the call: “Hello? What’s the matter?”

On the other end of the phone, Meng Chang tentatively asked, “Oh, Mr. Pei, it’s nothing special really. I just heard that Chi Xing Studio and Shenhua Group have produced a few sample VR headsets. Would you like to go try them out?”

“You’ve always taught me that before creating a promotional plan, I must understand the product thoroughly.”

Pei Qian couldn’t help but frown.

Huh?

The VR headsets already had samples ready?

That was way too fast!

But on second thought, this level of VR headset wasn’t particularly difficult to develop. Strictly speaking, the VR headset wasn’t developed by Chi Xing Studio, but by a division of Shenhua Group’s original mobile phone business, which was familiar with all aspects of the operation. It made sense for them to be quick.

However…

Pei Qian hadn’t heard any news about this VR headset at all. If Meng Chang hadn’t actively called, he probably wouldn’t have known the headsets were ready.

On reflection, this was unavoidable.

After all, the VR headset was Chi Xing Studio’s project. Currently, Chi Xing Studio was just a game company invested in by Tenda, neither a wholly-owned subsidiary nor a subordinate department. Lin Wan didn’t need to report everything.

Moreover, Lin Wan might have felt it inappropriate to frequently consult or bother Mr. Pei about her studio’s affairs, so she wouldn’t actively discuss anything until the product was largely complete.

This made it difficult for Pei Qian to grasp Chi Xing Studio’s current specific status.

It could only be said that there are always trade-offs!

To drive Lin Wan away, Pei Qian had come up with this plan to establish Chi Xing Studio with joint funding from Tenda and Shenhua. But this inevitably meant that news from there wouldn’t flow as smoothly as from his own departments.

Fortunately, Meng Chang had come to inform him.

Pei Qian immediately nodded: “Of course we should go see! Let’s meet at Chi Xing Studio in an hour.”

For Pei Qian, the best outcome for this VR headset project would, of course, be a loss—a complete waste of money. This way, all the money Tenda had invested would go down the drain.

The second-best outcome would be that the game broke even or made a small profit, essentially busy work that earned some reputation. This way, they wouldn’t make money, and he could naturally push Lin Wan further away from Tenda Group.

The worst outcome would be if the game made a lot of money.

So Pei Qian definitely needed to go see and understand the situation.

Although he believed that a VR project had no reason to be popular in the current market, and even if it was well-received, it couldn’t possibly recover such a huge research and development cost, it was better to be safe than sorry. He needed to see the samples to feel at ease.

Moreover, he also needed to demonstrate to Meng Chang how to correctly do reverse promotion, so seeing the product was very necessary.

On the other side.

Meng Chang hung up the phone and immediately prepared to take a taxi to Chi Xing Studio.

This was official business, so it could be reimbursed—no need to take the bus!

He knew about the VR headset samples being delivered to Chi Xing Studio mainly because he had been following the VR headset project closely.

He was eager to see how Mr. Pei would execute reverse promotion for this project!

In Meng Chang’s view, the VR headset was already an impossible-to-fail project.

Massive investment from Shenhua and Tenda groups, successful game producer Lin Wan at the helm, the original Shangyang Games team assisting, and Shenhua’s original mobile phone department responsible for VR headset development.

And even earlier, he had inadvertently laid a huge groundwork: Qiao Laoshi.

If Meng Chang’s previous promotional plans were of difficult level, then this project seemed like hell difficulty.

Could Mr. Pei really handle even this?

Meng Chang was a bit skeptical.

It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in Mr. Pei’s abilities; he mainly wanted to broaden his horizons.

So he had been following this project closely and immediately notified Mr. Pei as soon as he heard the news from the project managers’ group chat.

At this moment, Meng Chang was like an elementary school student thirsting for knowledge.

For him, conventional knowledge wasn’t interesting—it was this kind of specialized knowledge that was fascinating!

If Mr. Pei could successfully promote even under such difficult circumstances, Meng Chang would willingly submit and acknowledge Mr. Pei as the strongest!

An hour later, Pei Qian arrived at Chi Xing Studio.

Meng Chang was already there, along with Lin Wan, Cai Jiangdong, Ye Zhizhou, Old Song (the product manager for the VR headset), and Qiao Laoshi.

“Mr. Pei!” Everyone greeted him.

Lin Wan was quite moved to see Mr. Pei come in person.

If they were still at Shangyang Games, Lin Wan would definitely have immediately reported to Mr. Pei after developing a new device.

But things were different now.

She was now the top executive of Chi Xing Studio, and Tenda only had an investment relationship with Chi Xing Studio.

This VR headset was just a prototype. Bothering Mr. Pei for something like this seemed somewhat inappropriate.

It was like how Shenhua Group was also an investor in Chi Xing Studio. After these VR headset samples were made, would they need to get Mr. Lin, the president of Shenhua Group, to review them? It obviously wouldn’t be appropriate.

So Lin Wan felt she should shoulder any issues herself. She could send a unit to Mr. Pei after the final production version was ready.

But unexpectedly, Mr. Pei had actively come over!

Clearly, Mr. Pei was concerned about the project at the newly established Chi Xing Studio, so he came to check on it.

It was like parents whose child had just started boarding school—although they knew they shouldn’t visit, they still ran over at noon to peek through the school fence.

As for Chi Xing Studio’s lead designer Cai Jiangdong, as well as Ye Zhizhou, Qiao Liang, and others, they all had the same thought.

Mr. Pei is here, so we have our pillar of support!

Mr. Pei is here, so this project is stable!

Pei Qian wasn’t aware of everyone’s rich inner thoughts. Time was precious, so he went straight to the point: “Where are the headsets?”

“Here they are.” Cai Jiangdong immediately took out two VR headset samples from nearby.

After Mr. Pei and Meng Chang reached out to take the headsets, he took four controllers from the side and handed them over: “These are the controllers.”

Pei Qian took them in his hands, but before he could put them on, he had already fallen silent.

What was this unique design all about?!

Most VR headsets on the market looked similar—from the front, they were just ordinary rounded rectangles, or had a slight curve, predominantly white in color, looking rather plain.

But Chi Xing Studio’s VR headset was full of angles, wider than regular VR headsets, with a high-tech carbon fiber-like deep black material, and a V-shaped design with red and blue changing lights that looked extremely cool.

The entire headset was also shaped like a V, though the angle wasn’t as exaggerated as the V-shaped light.

Above the V-shaped light were two inconspicuous small circular holes—the two cameras used for positioning.

Unlike typical VR headsets with a three-strap design (top and two sides), this VR headset’s main body was relatively independent. The straps didn’t connect directly to the headset body but to the “forehead guard” section.

The forehead guard was shaped like a crescent moon, with a curve that perfectly fit an average person’s forehead. It wasn’t bare but had a flat, nearly rectangular hexagonal protrusion with Chi Xing Studio’s logo engraved on it.

Because the straps connected to the forehead guard above rather than directly to the VR headset body, they didn’t extend horizontally to the back of the head but diagonally downward to a position below the back of the head.

The end of the strap had a rectangular battery compartment. When worn properly, the straps would automatically adjust and tighten, though there were also manual adjustment knobs and unlock buttons.

Both the forehead guard and the battery compartment had padding where they touched the skin, for better fit with the player’s head and improved comfort, while also insulating from any heat the battery compartment might emit.

Compared to other VR headsets that used elastic straps that tightly bound the head, this design’s biggest advantage was convenience and comfort.

Other VR headsets were cumbersome to wear, requiring different strap lengths for different people. If too tight, they were uncomfortable; if too loose, they wouldn’t stay on and would easily fall off.

Moreover, VR headsets tended to feel front-heavy, with the front part pressing on the face.

This VR headset, through its design, used the battery compartment at the back for counterbalance, evenly distributing the weight of the VR headset front to back.

Most of the weight was at the forehead guard position, not connected to the main body of the headset, so the entire headset body was essentially suspended from the forehead guard, preventing the feeling of pressure on the face.

When wearing it, one simply had to put the headset on their face, open the unlock button on the battery compartment to lengthen the straps, place it on their head, and the straps would automatically tighten. It was very convenient to wear and adaptable to different head shapes.

But this was clearly not the most outrageous part—the controllers were even more extreme!

Other VR headset controllers were basically cylindrical objects with a joystick and a few buttons at the top.

But this VR headset’s controllers looked more like futuristic sci-fi handguns, except the barrel was much shorter than a normal gun, and the angle between the barrel and grip was very large, somewhat like a shotgun grip.

On the back of the hand was another adjustable strap, which had elastic flexibility and could also be adjusted in length.

When worn properly, the thumb naturally rested on the hammer position at the end of the barrel. This was a small platform with a joystick larger than those on conventional VR controllers. When the thumb was pressed on it, the pad of the finger perfectly matched the curve of the joystick cap, avoiding the discomfort that could come from a joystick cap that was too small during extended use.

At the lower left of the joystick, in the hammer position, was a special key that simulated a hammer and could be cocked. On the left side of the joystick were two clickable circular buttons, which were also larger than those on typical VR controllers, similar in size to console controller buttons, making them more comfortable to press.

The index finger naturally fell on the trigger position of the gun-shaped controller. Unlike other controllers that just had a lonely trigger button, this controller specifically had a ring-shaped guard like a real gun, to prevent accidental pressing and also to protect the trigger button.

When the thumb was placed downward and the web of the hand naturally fit the grip, there was another button at the magazine button position of the gun, slightly smaller than the original buttons above, with a different feel.
