From Liuli Workshop to Yuzhao Palace was the longest route in Dige, because Liuli Workshop was located in the city center with roads leading in all directions. Many carriages heading to the city center could potentially converge there.
Now, a line of three carriages was speeding along the road.
Several elders sat on the carriage shafts, all with somber faces and tense expressions.
According to Sang Tong’s requirements, these carriages wouldn’t ignite flames too early and alert their enemies. They must wait until entering the city center before erupting. Liuli Workshop had a famous night market—only by reaching there would this operation have particular destructive power.
This was the third route, which would pass through Liuli Workshop and charge straight toward Yuzhao Palace.
“Thud!”
Suddenly came a heavy sound from atop the third carriage. The people inside stuck their heads out the windows and looked up in alarm, seeing nothing. But when they turned back, they were horrified to discover that someone was now sitting on the carriage shaft.
A seductively beautiful woman turned her face and smiled sweetly at them: “Hi!”
The original driver was long gone. Looking around, ah, there he was in the roadside grass with a pointed footprint on his face.
Before the people in the carriage could react, Jing Hengbo flicked her finger and the bag containing flint flew far away.
The people in the carriage roared angrily and pounced over. Several of them struck out in fury, trying to push this suddenly appearing ghostly woman off the carriage.
Light and shadow seemed to flash before their eyes—the woman on the carriage shaft had ghostily vanished again!
Unable to stop their momentum, several people tumbled off the carriage with crashes and bangs. The lucky ones managed to roll to the roadside; the unlucky ones were directly crushed by the heavy wheels, letting out piercing screams.
The driverless carriage careened sideways and overturned into the roadside ditch. In the thunderous crash, those lying on the ground looked up to see that ghostly woman already on top of the second carriage!
The people in the second carriage had heard the commotion behind them. Startled, the driver reined in the horses as several figures flashed out, looking around alertly.
Suddenly came a “snap” from the roadside grass, sounding like someone disturbing the leaves. The men’s hair stood on end. Even the driver jumped down from the carriage and pounced toward the grass.
The roadside grass was thick. After searching for a while without finding anyone, they kept hearing “snap snap” sounds ahead, as if someone was constantly moving through the grass. They had to follow the sounds deeper and deeper, gradually moving farther and farther from the carriage.
Then they suddenly heard horses neighing.
They turned back in alarm to see the carriage had somehow started and was rumbling away down the road!
Several men stood in the grass looking at each other, dumbfounded.
The carriage was clearly empty, and there had been no one in any direction just now—how had the carriage started moving?
From the speeding carriage, a beautiful head suddenly emerged.
“Hi!” She smiled sweetly and shouted to those men by the roadside: “I don’t want to live anymore, so I’m borrowing your carriage to go die! Bye-bye!”
The carriage sped away, leaving the several men who were chasing with uneven steps far behind…
Jing Hengbo withdrew her hand, no longer showing the relaxed expression from before. She pressed her chest and coughed several times, touched the corner of her lips with her finger, and pursed her mouth.
She had been injured earlier in the empty granary, and afterward had no choice but to repeatedly use her abilities. Just now she had also remotely controlled stones in the roadside grass to make continuous noise, luring those men deep into the grass so they couldn’t return in time to pursue. Now her mental energy was exhausted—she was almost at the end of her rope.
Looking ahead, the population was gradually becoming denser. They had entered the city from the suburbs!
The first carriage ahead was only a small dot, almost about to be swallowed by the crowd ahead. She had to catch up immediately and stop it!
Jing Hengbo wanted to leave, but before leaving she should stop this carriage. However, she immediately discovered she didn’t know how to drive!
She didn’t know how to control horses. The horse was just following its previous commands, running forward faster and faster!
They were about to reach streets with foot traffic—the carriage would kill people!
“Ahhhhh help! Ahhhhh get out of the way!”
The people of Sishui Street were returning home in twos and threes due to tonight’s martial law when they saw a carriage charging past, bringing with it a gust of foul-smelling wind. Some were blown off balance and cursed under their breath: “Looking for death!”
Before they could steady themselves, another carriage came charging, with someone screaming on it—louder even than the carriage’s rattling: “Get out of the way! Quickly get out of the way! Ahhhhh someone help! Quickly help me stop this carriage!”
Seeing the carriage’s speed, everyone hurriedly moved aside in alarm. But suddenly ahead came another carriage, heading straight toward them!
That carriage was also extremely fast. In the blink of an eye, the two carriages were about to collide.
Jing Hengbo’s eyes widened.
The curtain of the opposite carriage suddenly lifted, revealing a snow-white, slender hand that seemed about to make some gesture.
Unfortunately, Jing Hengbo had no time to watch what the opposite carriage’s owner was doing.
She had to stop her carriage immediately!
Drawing her blade—slash!
With a whoosh, the reins snapped and the horse galloped away free.
Naturally, the carriage immediately lost balance without its horse and crashed toward the outer wall of a nearby residence.
Jing Hengbo cursed about instant karma coming quickly—she had just used this method on someone else’s carriage and now it was her turn. She closed her eyes and flashed away.
“Whoosh.”
“Clap clap” twice.
Two high heels fell from midair.
And one wail: “My shoes!”
…
Jing Hengbo crashed into somewhere with a bang.
She didn’t teleport to the street as imagined, but seemed to have crashed into a dark place. With a bang she hit an object that seemed hard but soft, knocking it backward with an “ouch.” Both fell to the ground with a crash.
“Holy shit, so many twinkling stars…” Jing Hengbo rubbed her head and climbed up shakily. Not bothering with whoever was underneath, she quickly stuck her head out to look for her shoes.
She saw those gorgeous high heels being held by a bewildered young man. Overjoyed, she shouted: “Keep them safe for me, I’ll come back for them later!” While saying without looking back: “Hello friend, goodbye friend, sorry for bumping into you, I’ll repay you if there’s a chance, mwah mwah.”
After babbling nonsense, she was about to get out of the carriage to desperately chase the last remaining carriage when a familiar voice behind her suddenly laughed: “You’re planning to get out barefoot like that?”
Jing Hengbo spun around: “Holy shit! Yelu Qi, why are you here!”
“I should be asking you that,” Yelu Qi looked at her with a half-smile, his gaze sweeping over her face before suddenly frowning. “My residence is in the alley. I just came out and you crashed right into me, hitting my chest so it hurts. You need to rub it for me…”
“Fine.” Jing Hengbo reached out and grabbed his collar. “Good thing it’s you. Quick, tell your driver to immediately chase that black carriage ahead!” She glared fiercely at Yelu Qi, her charming eyes like knives. “Don’t ask me why! Don’t babble! This is hugely important! If you dare cause trouble again, I’ll…”
“I just want to ask one thing,” Yelu Qi’s attention seemed not to be on her words. “Are you injured?”
Jing Hengbo froze.
Only then did she see clearly that Yelu Qi had none of his usual mocking smile. His gaze was actually gentle and concerned.
He was truly worried about her…
The confused thought flashed by, leaving her momentarily incredulous—had Yelu Qi also been reborn? Wasn’t his whole purpose to constantly oppose Gong Yin and her, like an unkillable cockroach continuously disgusting her? Why was he looking at her with such disgusting eyes? What had stimulated him? Didn’t sleep well last night? Got dumped by a woman? Got dumped by a man?
Though she didn’t say a word, her rich facial expressions were enough for Yelu Qi to understand the meaning. He suddenly sighed softly, released her hand, and leaned out to give orders: “Turn around, pursue that grayish-black carriage ahead at full speed. The carriage body is three chi wide with mottled marks. The driver is about fifty years old, wearing gray brocade robes.”
With a crack of the whip, the carriage immediately turned. Jing Hengbo asked incredulously: “I clearly didn’t tell you which carriage!”
“We passed that carriage earlier.” Yelu Qi said casually. “I felt the smell emanating from that carriage was strange, so I took an extra look.”
Took an extra look!
Just one glance and he remembered, seeing so much detail!
Jing Hengbo suddenly felt very envious of these gods’ intelligence and wanted to split open his brain to steal half for her own head.
The wrist Yelu Qi had grabbed suddenly grew warm, then a warm current flowed from her pulse and spread downward. The nauseous churning feeling in her chest immediately improved considerably.
With her body feeling somewhat better, the weakness she had suppressed earlier surged forward. She couldn’t be bothered arguing or fighting with Yelu Qi. She shifted and lay down on the other side of the seat: “Hurry up…”
“What exactly is happening?” Yelu Qi asked.
Jing Hengbo glanced at him without answering. Honestly, she really didn’t trust Yelu Qi much.
After all, he was a political enemy. She couldn’t trust him completely just because of momentary assistance. Who knew if there was any secret collusion between Yelu Qi and Sang Tong? Though she believed this was Sang Tong’s dying mad counterattack, and with Yelu Qi’s status and character he wouldn’t want Dige in chaos with people suffering, it was still better to be careful.
“You just need to make the carriage go faster. We need to catch up and stop them before reaching Liuli Workshop.” She answered weakly.
Yelu Qi looked at her complexion and took out a pill, tossing it up and down in his hand while asking with a smile: “How about it? Dare you take it?”
Jing Hengbo reached out and grabbed it from his palm, swallowing it without thinking, then closed her eyes and said lazily: “Thanks.”
Yelu Qi was stunned for a moment.
He hadn’t expected her to trust him so completely without hesitation.
He looked at his palm—the momentary touch still lingered, those smooth, light fingers that seemed to tickle his heart when they grabbed.
But Jing Hengbo’s scoffing laughter the next moment dispelled his emotion.
“It would be easy for you to harm me now—why go to the trouble of getting poison to trick me?” She said smugly. “Besides, Gong Yin told me that while good medicines sometimes don’t smell or look great, poison definitely has problematic odors. Your pill is fragrant and lustrous, genuine purple-gold color—isn’t this your Yelu family’s legendary hereditary treasure pill ‘Heavenly Fragrance Purple’? Hmph, I do have this much discernment.”
“You even know about Heavenly Fragrance Purple,” Yelu Qi’s expression looked somewhat unpleasant as he said reluctantly: “Do you know that Heavenly Fragrance Purple also has distinctions in the Yelu family? Different grades? Do you know which grade I gave you?”
“Gong Yin told me that Heavenly Fragrance Purple is your Yelu family’s secret medicine, not just three grades but very complex. But anyone could guess with their toes that what you gave me must be the most ordinary grade,” Jing Hengbo waved her fingers casually in the air. “But you don’t need to worry that I won’t appreciate your kindness. Don’t worry, I know that even the lowest grade of Heavenly Fragrance Purple is priceless outside. I’ll remember this favor,” she seriously drew in the air as if there really was an account book in front of her, and earnestly made a check mark: “There, the old grudge about the bird droppings is hereby canceled. You still owe me…” She squinted and seriously counted in the air: “One, two, three, four… mm, five grudges. Remember to repay them slowly. You can also exchange with first and second grade Heavenly Fragrance Purple. Thanks.”
She talked to herself and waved her hand, seeming to arrange everything this way. A faint crystalline quality bloomed on her face.
Yelu Qi stared at her fixedly, seeming to want to laugh yet also to sigh.
Somehow, he suddenly discovered he particularly enjoyed watching her talk—watching her thin lips move up and down, babbling out strings of half-comprehensible words. Sometimes he didn’t understand what she was saying at all, but he could clearly feel her freedom, exuberance, brilliance, and vitality.
So much so that once she stopped talking, he could immediately feel the coolness in the air. When she spoke, it was as if flowers bloomed and leaves flourished throughout the world. When she fell silent, heaven and earth instantly lost color.
Of course, it would be more perfect if she didn’t have to mention Gong Yin in every paragraph.
Half-reclining, Jing Hengbo’s complexion gradually began improving. He saw a crystalline quality emerge from between her brows, containing a faint purple aura.
The lowest grade of Heavenly Fragrance Purple?
Hehe.
He smiled without clarifying the meaning of his actions today. He didn’t want to think too much about it. Having been enemies with her for so long, he had harmed her quite a few times in big and small ways. When harming her, he hadn’t hesitated. When helping her, it also came from his heart—nothing worth overthinking.
After resting briefly, Jing Hengbo felt much better and decided to finish off the third carriage in one go.
She lifted the carriage curtain to look for that carriage’s position. At first glance, her expression changed: “So fast! We’ve reached Liuli Workshop! Ah! Where’s that carriage?”
“We took a shortcut,” Yelu Qi said. “Since we knew the other party was coming here, better to wait ahead.”
Jing Hengbo thought this was good too. She breathed a sigh of relief, but seeing the bustling night market crowd, her heart couldn’t help tightening.
Hopefully those two routes had already been intercepted, otherwise…
“You go notify the people that this area is under control tonight and tell them to disperse immediately.”
“Only Gong Yin has the authority to issue martial law orders in Dige, and they require military enforcement.” Yelu Qi said. “I don’t have many guards with me, nor do I have official seals. Going to disperse the people wouldn’t be effective.” Seeing her serious expression, Yelu Qi stopped being casual and explained: “Tonight was already under martial law with curfew, but the Yuzhao Dragon Cavalry and Kanglong Army all went to raid the Sang family’s hidden forces throughout Dige. The Imperial Guards came out rather slowly—they should disperse and go home soon.”
“Too slow, too slow. Didn’t I already ask someone to notify them? What are Gong Yin and the Imperial Guards doing—did they overexert themselves last night…” Jing Hengbo was muttering when she suddenly heard commotion ahead.
Looking out, she saw a group of carriages and horses suddenly charge into the night market ahead. The guards had bright clothing and fierce expressions, constantly whipping the people walking around.
“Move aside! Move aside! The Governor’s son arrives—immediately withdraw!”
Whips cracked loudly as people covered their heads and dodged. Children’s crying and women’s screams mixed into chaos. Ahead was the center of Liuli Workshop with a Jade Belt River. Red lanterns reflected in the river, and arched bridges rose like moons—this had always been one of Liuli Workshop’s scenic highlights and the place with the densest foot traffic. People visiting the Liuli night market mostly liked to stroll here. Now the crowd under the bridge was being dispersed, clustering together and scattering in all directions. People kept getting bumped and crying out. The night market instantly became chaotic as a pot of porridge.
“What Governor’s son?” Jing Hengbo’s eyebrows stood up angrily. “Can you drive horses here? Disturbing the people!”
“Hey, don’t rush to scold. Speaking of which, this should count as one of your trusted associates.” Yelu Qi suddenly spoke with a smile.
“What? My trusted associate?” Jing Hengbo looked back incredulously.
“The Grand Governor—that’s the Kanglong Army Grand Governor, managing all Kanglong Army affairs in Dige. He’s Gong Yin’s direct subordinate. Now that you and Gong Yin have such a close relationship, and he even tacitly allowed you to fight for governing rights, isn’t this Kanglong Army Governor your trusted associate?” Yelu Qi’s half-smile carried either teasing or sighing.
Jing Hengbo vaguely remembered this Grand Governor—very silent, with a square black face. If you cut a paper crescent and covered his face to tan for half a month, he could probably impersonate Judge Bao. Such a person looked very orthodox—he couldn’t have gained Gong Yin’s trust without being orthodox. How did he raise such a son?
“Gong Yin should have his subordinates properly discipline his son. Look at this domineering behavior—it seems like the nearby people are used to it. They dodge as soon as they see him coming, clearly showing this isn’t the first time he’s disturbed the peace.”
Yelu Qi raised an eyebrow, smiling without speaking. Grand Governor Cheng’s indulgence of his beloved son naturally had his reasons—not everyone could interfere. Everyone in Dige knew that offending Grand Governor Cheng might be fine, but offending his son would definitely cause trouble.
Of course, he wouldn’t help Gong Yin explain.
But then he heard Queen Jing talking to herself: “But you can’t blame him really. He can manage the Grand Governor, but can he manage people’s family affairs? Loving mothers spoil children—this must be an only son. Completely spoiled!”
Yelu Qi turned around, too lazy to continue discussing with her—it seemed like Queen Your Majesty had also spoiled the Right State Preceptor!
Just as he turned around, he heard Jing Hengbo suddenly cry “Ah!”
When he turned back, he couldn’t help but also cry “Ah!”
Jing Hengbo had disappeared again!
…
Jing Hengbo cried out because she saw the carriage she had been chasing arrive!
The grayish-black carriage appeared like a ghost from that end of the three-way intersection, heading straight for the busiest area under the bridge.
Jing Hengbo had no time to think further. She flashed out of the carriage, then flashed again to land on that charging grayish-black carriage.
The driver on the carriage was concentrating on reaching his target, preparing to ignite the fire under Jade Belt Bridge where foot traffic was densest. Suddenly sensing something wrong beside him, he turned to see Jing Hengbo.
Jing Hengbo’s heart suddenly jumped.
She actually didn’t see surprise in the other person’s eyes!
Not good—the other party was prepared!
Before this thought finished forming, suddenly came a “whoosh” from behind—the wind from someone’s punch, fierce and violent!
Jing Hengbo disappeared with a whoosh.
The next instant she was under the carriage, watching in frustration as the carriage brushed past her. The curtain lifted to reveal a pair of cold eyes that stared at her warningly.
Jing Hengbo stared blankly at those eyes, unable to understand why these people could make such a great determination to die. Did the Sang family truly have such powerful magic? Or did these death warriors actually have other hidden reasons?
The carriage rumbled forward relentlessly.
She was stunned for only a moment, then stamped her foot and flashed again.
The next moment she appeared under the bridge, in front of the crowd.
The people in the carriage were already prepared—it would be difficult for her to stop them. She could only quickly warn the people.
“Move aside! Move aside!” She ran toward the crowd, shouting loudly. “There’s immediate danger, move aside, move aside!”
Her shouts were drowned in the chaotic clamoring. The people were being driven away by that group of young masters and thugs under the bridge, scattering in all directions. Who would pay attention to her calls?
Jing Hengbo felt slightly relieved because she discovered that when people were driven off the bridge, many flowed directly along both sides of the bridge, and there were isolated walkways beside the bridge that carriages couldn’t reach. This way, once the carriage self-ignited, the lethality wouldn’t be as great as expected.
However, that area under the bridge was occupied by the Governor’s son. If the carriage crashed there, these people would be the unlucky ones. Though these people were all scum, they were still human lives. She decided to reluctantly save them anyway.
“You should move aside too!” She waved at the Governor’s son at the other end of the crowd. “There’s about to be…”
Yelu Qi got out of the carriage on the other side and was coming over, but was blocked by the scattering people.
“Oh, there’s a little lady over there!” The Governor’s son did notice Jing Hengbo. After all, in a crowd flowing outward, someone moving against the current was particularly conspicuous.
“Oh, that little lady is waving at me!” The pale green youth vaguely made out Jing Hengbo’s appearance but didn’t hear her words clearly. He only saw her waving anxiously, and immediately felt elated. Pointing with his whip, he said: “Grab her for me!”
A group of guards immediately pounced like wolves and tigers, pushing through the crowd. “Little lady, stop! Our young master wants to show you the Jade Belt River scenery!”
With all the voices in chaos, Jing Hengbo couldn’t hear what those fellows were saying clearly. Just looking at their expressions, she knew it wasn’t good. At this moment she had no mind to pay attention. Turning back, she saw the carriage had already charged forward, heading toward a group of people who had been driven in the wrong direction. The person on the carriage shaft was sneering coldly, raising the black flint in his hand. Fire flashed, illuminating his pale, sinister features…
“Yelu Qi!” She couldn’t care about anything else and shouted with all her strength. “Stop him!”
Yelu Qi had originally been rushing toward her, but a martial artist’s alertness made him observe in all directions. He also vaguely felt something was wrong with that carriage. Hearing Jing Hengbo’s call, he immediately stopped, turned around, and leaped into the air.
The death warrior on the carriage finally reached the center of the crowd. With a cold smile at the corner of his mouth, he threw down the firelight in his hand!
Just one spark was needed for the carriage to immediately ignite, then internal mechanisms would automatically operate, turning it into a rampaging killing machine!
“Bang.” Suddenly a human figure crashed over like a cannonball, knocking down the death warrior who was lighting the fire. His foot hooked the carriage shaft, and with a whoosh he spun like a windmill, his hand snatching the lit match that was about to fall onto the carriage body.
With a whoosh, that person flipped up from under the carriage, his face iron-blue—it was Yelu Qi. Before he could steady himself, he swung his sleeve fiercely and slapped the two death warriors who had lunged out back with two smacks.
He had already smelled the special odor of that oil mud and immediately understood what would happen. His eyes were colder than ice. These two palms were struck in anger, hitting those two men until blood flowed from their mouths and noses, unable even to crawl up.
A figure flashed as Yelu Qi dove into the carriage compartment and lifted up those two men. One of them tremblingly reached behind his back. Yelu Qi’s eyes turned cold, his palm twisted, and with a crack the man screamed loudly. His wrist drooped down at an odd angle, and a secretly hidden match fell silently.
Yelu Qi lifted his toe to catch the match on his foot and flicked it far away, then turned and delivered two more merciless palms, knocking both men unconscious without a sound.
Yelu Qi searched the carriage again. After confirming there were no ignition materials and no one left to cause trouble, he lifted the prisoners and got out of the carriage.
Before he could steady himself, he heard screaming sounds, then looked up with cold eyes.
…
Seeing Yelu Qi intervene in time to block the fire, Jing Hengbo immediately breathed a sigh of relief, feeling her whole body relax.
It was over, it was over.
This was the third carriage. The first two routes still hadn’t arrived by now, so they must have been successfully intercepted. The catastrophe for Dige’s people had finally been averted.
While relaxing, she also felt some regret—sigh, this time she had truly been an unsung hero, risking life and death for Dige’s people, yet no one would ever know.
But that was just a thought. She wouldn’t want to use Dige people’s lives to prove her great achievements.
Looking at the gradually calming crowd now, she felt quite satisfied—look, this peace was earned by her!
Once she relaxed, she felt pain everywhere in her body. This half day had been too tense. She rubbed her arms and was about to leave when suddenly her shoulder tightened, grabbed by iron-clamp-like fingers and forcefully turned around.
The other party used such force that she felt her shoulder bone might shatter. With an “ouch” she looked up to see several fierce, evil faces full of lewd intent.
“Little lady,” the leader sprayed his foul breath on her face, “our young master has taken a fancy to you. Come along obediently with us to accompany our young master in appreciating flowers and viewing the moon—there’ll be benefits for you.”
“Go screw yourself,” Jing Hengbo tilted her head to avoid his breath, saying with disgust, “What stray cats and dogs are these? Move aside!”
“I say, miss,” a gold-crowned youth pushed through the crowd, elegantly waving a folding fan despite the cool weather, thinking himself quite romantic as he sauntered over, “why be so affected? This young master has always cherished beauty and wouldn’t bear to force you. Let’s appreciate the moonlight over Jade Belt River together and observe the brilliant starfire of Liuli Workshop—wouldn’t that be wonderful?”
“Wonderful your ass,” Jing Hengbo lazily glanced at him sideways, “looks like a potted plant, expression very lame, even flies would fall over dead looking at you.”
She naturally had upturned eye corners, so even rolling her eyes looked like flirting. The Governor’s son was tickled by her, not really paying attention to what she said. Giggling, he used his folding fan to lift her chin: “Miss, I say you’re being affected and you are. If you didn’t want to attract this young master’s attention, why were you jumping and shouting and waving over there just now?”
“I was trying to save your worthless life, save all your worthless lives! Look at that black carriage—if it had really hit you, you’d all be done for!” Jing Hengbo sighed that narcissistic people were everywhere. Why couldn’t they learn from her? What a humble person she was.
The group of burly men were stunned, then all burst into loud laughter: “Save us? Hahaha, save us?”
“What could that carriage do?” Someone glanced sideways at the stopped carriage. “I could kick it over with one foot!”
“Hey, don’t laugh at the beauty. She’s right too—accompanying me would also save my little life,” the Governor’s son obviously took it as flirtation. His face, pale from excessive wine and debauchery, showed an ambiguous smile as he leaned down. “Save me from lovesickness…”
His folding fan slowly slid down from Jing Hengbo’s chin, smirking as he moved to lift her collar. A heavy smell of alcohol hit her face. Jing Hengbo suddenly looked up and said: “Wow! So beautiful!”
“What?” The Governor’s son was startled and instinctively looked up.
“Smack.” A stone hit hard on his forehead, instantly raising a purple, pointed bump.
“Ah!” The Governor’s son screamed, covering his forehead and staggering backward. Before he hit the ground, he was already howling: “How dare you hit me! Kill her! Kill her!”
Jing Hengbo was stunned—was that necessary? Too domineering, wasn’t it?
The big man who had been gripping her shoulder shoved her forward hard, then suddenly drew his blade and raised it high to chop down viciously!
The bright blade light hung like the Milky Way in the moonlight, causing people who had fled far away to scream in alarm.
A silver-black figure flashed as a pair of hands seemed to appear from thin air, catching the blade about to chop down. At the same time, the big man screamed—a stone had suddenly struck hard on his foot!
The big man screamed and was kicked down by Yelu Qi who had come to the rescue. Jing Hengbo unceremoniously ran over him—stepping on the big man’s face.
With anger in her heart, Jing Hengbo charged very fast. Her body shot forward several steps toward the intersection of Liuli Workshop that led in all directions. Looking up, suddenly a grayish-black carriage crashed into her view.
Her heart shook tremendously.
A Sang family carriage!
How was there still one?
Had the fake monk and yellow-robed knight failed to stop one route? How many were left? Could there be more? Hadn’t the crisis for the people been resolved?
Jing Hengbo’s head buzzed. The heart she had just set down immediately jumped back to her throat. The situation had suddenly become worse!
Without thinking, she charged over.
Her body flashed as she headed toward that carriage. At this point it was too late to disperse the people—she could only try to take down that carriage!
But this time, there was no favorable situation to exploit!
This carriage came extremely fast. The moment Jing Hengbo spotted it, the person on the carriage had already swept a spark that fell onto the carriage body!
“Snap.” The carriage instantly burst into flames! In an instant, it became a huge object wrapped in bright red flames, charging straight into the crowd.
Like a death coffin, carrying wind and fire, racing toward death!
Almost immediately, screams filled the entire night market!
Chaos, noise, screams, crying, crowding people, fallen shoes and socks, the rampaging burning carriage, overturned vendors, countless children and elderly falling and crying on the ground… Fierce flames lit up the night, reflecting the panicked, chaotic crowd. In an instant, the prosperous night market became a hellish scene, with screams piercing the clouds.
The chaos in Liuli Workshop immediately caused blockages. The Imperial Guards and Kanglong Army that had been approaching from the distance to enforce curfew and maintain order were immediately blocked.
“Yelu Qi!” Jing Hengbo shouted in the chaos. “Evacuate the crowd! Evacuate the crowd!”
Across the rolling sea of heads, she saw that Yelu Qi wasn’t evacuating people but leaping into the air, rushing straight toward her.
“Don’t be reckless, fall back!”
The carriage charged forward exploding all the way, making tremendous cracking sounds. Burning human forms kept falling from the carriage like rotten wood, further terrifying people. The carriage body was precisely designed—not only could it continue charging about ten zhang without a driver, but the oil mud inside was layered. Every distance it moved, the oil mud would sink down, causing new rounds of explosion and burning. Before the carriage had completely charged into the crowd, the scattered sparks had already caused many burns. Some were pushed into the water, crying out in alarm, while others took the hint and desperately jumped into the water to escape. Splash after splash of people falling into water continued without end.
When the carriage crashed near the previously stopped carriage, there was immediately a thunderous sound, igniting that carriage in a great fire. The flames covered the sky and earth, almost instantly burning down the walls of the house that carriage was leaning against. Fortunately that carriage had stopped, so not many were injured. In the collapse, some screamed while others shouted: “There’s another one here!” More people began jumping into the water, crowding on the river surface like dumplings. Some forgot they couldn’t swim and began cramping and screaming as soon as they entered the water. After bobbing up briefly, they disappeared, while everyone around was in panic—no one paid attention to a single life’s death. The river surface was filled with screams and cries, and floating corpses.
Seeing this hellish scene, Jing Hengbo almost collapsed—she had put in so much effort, been injured, used so much thought, yet in the end still couldn’t prevent it!
In this moment she immensely hated the designer of these carriages—a genius! But the most vicious genius! Letting such a person live with hatred, Dahuang would never have peace!
But now there was no time to settle accounts with the mastermind. She looked back at the crowd—no good, the crowd was already in chaos, evacuation was absolutely impossible. Worse, the army seemed to be arriving, blocking all exits. Now the entire Liuli Workshop was full of people everywhere. As long as the carriage charged forward, wherever it hit would definitely cause heavy casualties.
Now only one method remained.
Make the carriage hit where there were fewest people!
When harm was unavoidable, she could only choose to minimize it.
The place with fewest people…
Only under the bridge where people had already been dispersed had the fewest people!
Jing Hengbo looked back to see that now even more isolated area under the bridge, where the young master and his bullying guards had all been scared stupid, standing there with mouths agape, even forgetting to run away.
Looking back at the carriage, there was still one driver left. Because he sat on the carriage shaft and the burning had started from the back of the carriage, he somehow wasn’t dead yet. His body rigidly continued driving, and in the roaring flames this person seemed to have lost all feeling, his whole body blackened by smoke, terrifying as a zombie.
Jing Hengbo gritted her teeth and flashed.
Yelu Qi, who had just rushed to her side, only caught a piece of her clothing.
The next moment, many people in their panic suddenly saw a woman appear on the horse pulling the burning carriage.
The woman was lying face-down toward the horse’s rear in an extremely ungraceful position, her body bouncing precariously as if she might fall at any moment.
People gaped, not understanding how this scene happened, almost forgetting to flee.
But Jing Hengbo was cursing loudly in her stomach.
How did she teleport in this direction!
With chest tightness, heart palpitations, dizziness and blurred vision, she knew she was at the end of her rope, but could only swallow a mouthful of bloody saliva and flash again, landing on the carriage shaft.
Yelu Qi, who had chased to the horse’s back, once again missed her clothing.
“Oh my goodness, so hot!” Her screams immediately rang out as she desperately stamped her feet on the carriage shaft. “So hot, so hot, going to die, going to die!” While screaming, she snatched the whip from the driver. The whip made her scream again as soon as she touched it: “Damn, why is it so hot!” Her mouth was screaming but her hands weren’t slow at all. She kicked the half-dead fellow off the carriage and, hissing and gasping, suddenly cracked the whip hard on the left horse’s rear.
“That way!” Under the night sky her voice was crisp and decisive, drowning out others’ screams and the footsteps of Kanglong Army arriving from the alley behind.
The harness reins were specially made and hadn’t burned through yet. The horse neighed long, raised its hooves, and changed direction.
Charging straight toward where Jing Hengbo pointed.
Under the bridge. The Governor’s son. His lackey guards. A small, sparse circle.
The Governor’s son had been hiding under the bridge, thinking that since he wasn’t in the carriage’s path, he would surely escape disaster. But now looking up, he saw the wildly charging burning carriage with the long-haired, cold-eyed woman on it.
This woman who had just had her chin lifted by him, whom he’d wanted to seize and kill, now had a murderous look on her face, death’s whip in her hand, pointing directly at him!
His mind went blank. After a long while he let out a piercing scream: “No! Help, Father—”
“BOOM!”
That constantly sparking flame carriage crashed over like an avalanche, engulfing that group of young masters and evil servants who couldn’t move in their great peril. With a whoosh it exploded into chains of sparks filling the sky. In the thunderous crash the carriage toppled, smashing through the bridge railing. The cart horses screamed pitifully, broke free of their reins and galloped away covered in flames, their hooves trampling vaguely charred flesh and blood.
“My son—”
Another piercing cry rang out from the nearby alley entrance.
A figure came flying through the air, stepping over countless heads, separating people with both hands in midair and throwing them aside like balls. Ignoring the fierce flames under the bridge, he charged in stepping on burning debris scattered everywhere.
“Grand Governor!”
The Kanglong Army that had just arrived at the street entrance all cried out frantically, with horrified expressions on their faces.
“Yaozu!” Kanglong Army Grand Governor Cheng Gumo nearly went mad. His son! After four generations of single heirs, seeking famous doctors everywhere, losing three wives, using up his family fortune, he had finally gotten this only precious son at age forty!
Right before his eyes, in plain sight, in the blink of an eye his son was gone, struck by the charging fire carriage!
When he reached Liuli Street entrance, he was only a few zhang from his son!
“Yaozu!” The Grand Governor went crazy, charging into the carriage with his head on fire, constantly screaming as he threw out burning, broken planks, futilely searching for his son in clusters of flames. “Come out, come out! Yaozu!”
At Liuli Street entrance, Gong Yin sat high on his horse with an iron-blue face.
