Feng Jiu’er shot Xiao Yingtao a glance and walked toward the Tang residence without hesitation.
Behind her, Xiao Yingtao and Jian Yi flanked her on either side, each carrying a medicine box. Feng Jiu’er walked ahead with empty hands, unhurried and composed, a touch of pride in her bearing.
For nothing more than a physician, she carried herself with no small amount of presence — it made people look twice.
“Miss Long.” Tang Rong, seeing the three of them step down from the carriage, strode forward to greet them.
“Young Master Tang.” Feng Jiu’er cupped her hands toward him. “Have you been waiting long?”
“Not at all.” Tang Rong shook his head with a smile and waved a hand. “Miss Long is right on time. Please, this way!”
Feng Jiu’er gave a slight nod and continued forward.
Two characters were prominently inscribed above the Tang family’s gate: Tang Residence. Even before stepping inside, Feng Jiu’er could already sense the air of wealth and status. Their own shop in Yuecheng wasn’t particularly large, and her own reputation here was practically nonexistent. She hadn’t expected the young master of such a prosperous household to come in person to seek treatment at their pharmacy. Just for that, her impression of this Young Master Tang had already improved.
Led by Tang Rong, Feng Jiu’er, Jian Yi, and Xiao Yingtao arrived at the main hall of the Tang residence.
“Miss Long, please!” Tang Rong gestured respectfully once more.
Feng Jiu’er turned to Xiao Yingtao, who handed over the medicine box she carried. Jian Yi took it from her before Feng Jiu’er could reach for it.
Xiao Yingtao looked at Tang Rong and said softly, “Young Master Tang, the treatment needs to be paired with some rehabilitation exercises. I have two drawings here — please have your servants have these built out of solid wood. In about three days, the old master will need to start standing and walking a little, and these two tools will come in handy.”
Xiao Yingtao pulled out a few sheets of paper and handed them to Tang Rong.
Tang Rong immediately reached out to take them, then glanced over at Feng Jiu’er.
“Does Miss Long mean to say that in just three days my father will be able to stand and walk?”
“Standing in three days shouldn’t be a problem. Whether he can truly walk depends on how well his recovery progresses,” Feng Jiu’er replied softly. “This is a necessary part of his recovery process. Have your servants prepare these items in advance, Young Master Tang.”
“Of course.” Tang Rong turned, looking pleased, toward a man nearby. “Steward, go see to this.”
“Yes, young master.” The steward stepped forward and took the drawings with both hands.
“Xiao Yingtao, go help explain the details,” Feng Jiu’er said, waving a hand toward her.
Xiao Yingtao nodded and left with the steward.
Tang Rong led Feng Jiu’er and Jian Yi into the inner side room, and the main hall fell quiet.
After just over an hour of treatment from Feng Jiu’er, the old Master Tang was able to sit up on his own and even move his legs a little — a result that astonished the entire Tang household.
Tang Rong was deeply grateful to Feng Jiu’er, offering to pay double the house-call fee and insisting she stay for dinner.
“Miss Long, do stay,” the elder Madam Tang said in the main hall, smiling at Feng Jiu’er. “As it happens, my eldest daughter is visiting today as well. If you have the time, please stay for a simple meal. My eldest daughter’s father-in-law is in much the same condition as my husband — who knows, this meeting might bring you another bit of business, Miss Long.”
Tang Rong, pushing his father out from the side room, overheard his mother’s words.
“Miss Long, what my mother says is true. My eldest sister’s father-in-law is in a condition similar to my father’s — though his seems even more serious. It’s been half a year now, and he hasn’t shown the slightest improvement.”
Thanks to Feng Jiu’er’s treatment, old Master Tang had not only regained some sensation in his feet and could move them slightly, but his complexion had also improved considerably. With Feng Jiu’er’s skilled needlework, her composed manner, and the visible results of her treatment, the entire Tang household had come to trust her completely.
“Half a year? Your sister’s father-in-law?” Feng Jiu’er looked at Tang Rong, blinking, as though something had just occurred to her. She turned to the elder Madam Tang and asked gently, “Madam, would your eldest daughter happen to be Madam Yue?”
“That’s right, Madam Yue.” The elder Madam Tang smiled. “Her husband is Yue Jianfei — I wonder if Miss Long is familiar with him?”
“I am,” Feng Jiu’er said, her gaze drifting meaningfully toward Xiao Yingtao for a moment, a faint smile at the corner of her mouth.
It was only the first day of house calls, and already she’d crossed paths with Yue Jianfei’s wife — wasn’t this going just a little too smoothly?
Feng Jiu’er looked at the elder Madam Tang and said softly, “In Yuecheng, there’s surely no one who doesn’t know Master Yue Jianfei. I’m only someone who left to study medicine elsewhere — originally, I’m from the Feng Clan myself.”
“So Miss Long is from the Feng Clan.” Tang Rong, pushing his father over to stand beside his mother, said, “If you don’t mind, Miss Long, do stay for dinner tonight.”
“All right.” Feng Jiu’er didn’t decline again, smiling as she nodded.
Before dinner began, the elder Madam Tang took Feng Jiu’er, Xiao Yingtao, and Jian Yi on a walk through the Tang residence. By the time they returned, Madam Yue had just arrived at her parents’ home.
“Mother.” Tang Xiaohua, seeing the elder Madam Tang, stepped forward to greet her, two maidservants trailing behind her.
“Xiaohua, you’re back.” The elder Madam Tang smiled at her daughter.
Tang Xiaohua approached the group and looked at Feng Jiu’er. “Mother, who are they…?”
“Xiaohua, let me introduce you.” The elder Madam Tang took her daughter’s hand and looked toward Feng Jiu’er. “This is Miss Long, the owner of Longying Pharmacy. She just returned from out of town and has been giving consultations at the pharmacy. Your brother heard a miracle doctor had come to the pharmacy and brought your father over to see Miss Long. Her medical skill really is something — after just one session, your father’s legs already regained feeling. Xiaohua, Miss Long truly is a miracle doctor, and she’s courteous, witty in conversation, and well-read besides. A rare, wonderful young woman.”
Tang Xiaohua looked at Feng Jiu’er and extended her hand. “Miss Long, hello!”
“Hello!” Feng Jiu’er reached out and shook her hand.
“This is the first time I’ve ever heard my mother praise a woman so highly. It seems Miss Long really is different from other women.”
Tang Xiaohua, Yue Jianfei’s wife, had just turned forty, but she was so well-kept she looked more like she was in her thirties. She was attractive, tall, and carried herself with something of a heroic, martial air.
“Madam, you flatter me,” Feng Jiu’er said with a faint smile, withdrawing her hand.
“Not at all, not at all.” The elder Madam Tang laughed, pleased. “Actually, I was just thinking — would Miss Long be open to a match, perhaps?”
“A match?” Feng Jiu’er nearly lost her composure at the old madam’s words.
“That’s right.” The elder Madam Tang nodded. “My grandson — Xiaohua’s son — just turned twenty-three today, and he’s quite the fine young man. Xiaohua, what do you think of Miss Long? I, for one, am very pleased with her!”
