“Mu Mu! Be careful!” Feng Jiu’er wanted to jump down several times, but she was afraid that if she went down, she would only end up being a burden to him.
These wolves moved faster than any wolves she had seen before, their fangs sharper, their eyes more vicious!
So they really had been trained — specifically raised as killing tools!
In the distance, the flute’s melody continued without pause. Below, the wounds on Mu Mu’s body kept multiplying.
Feng Jiu’er’s brows knitted tightly together. Suddenly she raised her hand, plucked two leaves, and brought them to her lips.
She had already worked out the melody coming from afar. Although the person’s tune twisted and turned through countless modulations, to someone like her who had studied music deeply, it was nothing she couldn’t handle!
She brought the leaves to her lips, drew a deep breath, and began to play.
The sound was different from the flute, but the difference was this: that person was far away, while she was right here!
The tune she played was just as melodious, just as rich in tone, yet far louder than the distant flute.
Mu Mu, still locked in combat with the wolf pack, had no idea at first why she would choose this moment to play a tune. But to his surprise, he noticed the look in the wolves’ eyes gradually changing.
A trace of confusion crept in, a trace of bewilderment. The ferocity and violence in those wolf eyes slowly began to fade.
Feng Jiu’er gripped the leaves tightly between her fingers, and her melody grew even more melodious, even louder. Eventually, it completely drowned out the distant flute.
Among the pack, the largest wolf — also the one with the loudest howl — suddenly lifted its head and let out a long cry to the sky.
At its cry, the pack gradually retreated, no longer lunging at Mu Mu.
“He’s on the next ridge over, Mu Mu. Go capture him.” Feng Jiu’er only managed to spare a moment to say a few words before bringing the leaves back to her lips and continuing to play.
The wolf pack was now thoroughly confused, unsure of who was truly their master.
She had studied the other person’s melody for a moment — when the rhythm sped up, the wolves attacked Mu Mu with particular ferocity.
When that melody paused briefly, the pack’s attacks would also briefly ease.
So as she played, she deliberately slowed the rhythm, made it melodious and low, leisurely and unhurried. As a result, the wolves were left dumbfounded — unsure whether they should attack or stop.
Mu Mu stood in the middle of the pack, yet he could clearly sense that the wolves no longer held any hostility toward him.
With a light tap of his foot, he leapt up into the tree, landing not far behind Feng Jiu’er. “I can’t leave you behind.”
“Whoever is keeping this wolf pack caged certainly isn’t from the Right Army Institute. Even if they are, it must be some despicable scoundrel acting in secret.”
Feng Jiu’er couldn’t afford to say much more — she still had to keep playing.
The moment the tune stopped, the wolves would close in on them. Even up in the tree, they would press closer, ready to leap up at any moment.
But the instant Jiu’er’s tune resumed, they would slowly retreat again.
“Mu Mu, this person is dangerous — go, quickly!” Jiu’er had little breath to spare for words, and her hands couldn’t stop moving even for a moment. She urged him on hastily.
Mu Mu truly did not want to leave. But if that person drew closer, his flute might drown out Feng Jiu’er’s tune, and they would fall into danger all over again.
He had more or less spotted the location of the flute player earlier.
Sure enough, the flute’s melody was slowly drawing nearer — the player was making his way toward them, hoping to let his flute overpower Feng Jiu’er’s tune and reignite the black wolves’ will to fight!
He gritted his teeth and rose to his feet. “I’ll go and come right back. Whatever you do, don’t come down!”
“Got it!” Mu Mu gripped the long staff in his hand tightly, tapped the ground with his foot, and shot off at top speed toward where the flute player was hiding.
