“I heard you, why are you shouting?” Zhen Jiu’er glared at Lu Feifan, looking somewhat displeased.
But Lu Feifan showed no sign of joking at all; his expression was serious and solemn.
“But you do know those people. I wasn’t just making things up.”
Her words made the anger in Lu Feifan’s eyes fade considerably.
He said nothing, just lowered his head and ate.
Jiu’er was still drinking her soup.
Inexplicably, their conversation came to a temporary halt.
This time, no one knew how long they ate. When Jiu’er finished the last spoonful of soup and set down her spoon, she looked up to find that Lu Feifan had also finished eating.
“Eating too fast is bad for your stomach.” She reminded him.
“I wanted to talk with you.”
Lu Feifan wiped his mouth with a tissue and waved at A’Ke in the distance.
A’Ke came over and cleared the dishes.
Lu Feifan gestured for Jiu’er to follow him, and they walked to a small river not far away.
This was the place where the professor had met his fate.
Yet standing there, Lu Feifan felt no ripple of emotion in his heart.
When he turned and saw Zhen Jiu’er looking at the river with no particular expression either, he felt a bit surprised. “I thought a place where someone died would be frightening for you girls.”
“I was the first one to perform the professor’s autopsy.” Jiu’er wasn’t boasting; she was simply stating the facts.
Lu Feifan coughed lightly. He hadn’t expected to run into someone so tough, with none of the timidity typical of girls.
“The professor’s death has nothing to do with Xia Zi. I’ve already arranged for someone to send her back. You don’t need to investigate her any further — I can vouch for her innocence.”
“How do you know it has nothing to do with her? You weren’t there that night. And what’s your relationship with her, exactly?”
Jiu’er’s question left Lu Feifan silent.
After a long while, he finally said, “I’m her junior schoolmate. We took an archaeology course together.”
“If she’s just a senior schoolmate, then your vouching for her isn’t worth much.” Zhen Jiu’er wasn’t being sarcastic; she was simply speaking the truth.
“As much as I’d like to believe you, I can’t, not until I’ve gotten to the bottom of things.”
“Why would you want to believe me?” That was a rather surprising thing to say — if she remembered correctly, they hadn’t known each other before at all.
The way Zhen Jiu’er looked at him made Lu Feifan feel as if he was somehow already familiar with her.
Yet he truly didn’t know this girl.
“Also, what did you call me the first time you saw me?”
Back then, she had clearly called him by some unfamiliar name!
He hadn’t paid it any mind at the time, but now, remembering it suddenly, in that instant it felt… rather bizarre.
What had she called him again?
Why, when he tried to recall it, did that dream inexplicably come to mind?
“It’s nothing, I just mistook you for someone else when I saw you.” Zhen Jiu’er smiled faintly.
Lu Feifan knew she was just brushing him off.
But since she didn’t want to talk about it, Lu Feifan didn’t press further either.
“Anyway…”
“Why don’t you tell me first — who did she meet last night?”
“It was me.”
“No it wasn’t!” Jiu’er said this with absolute certainty.
“It wasn’t you. I saw clearly — the silhouette and build were completely different from yours.”
Lu Feifan didn’t answer, his thin lips pressed tightly together.
There was hesitation between his brows.
Something he wanted to say but couldn’t?
Jiu’er stepped forward, suddenly closing the distance so quickly it caught him off guard!
Her voice rose sharply as well. “Is the child in her belly yours?”
