Chapter 748: Father and Daughter, Such Cold Affection

These past two days had been fairly quiet ones for Feng Jiu’er.

Today she had just made a trip to the First Manor Under Heaven, but had not managed to see Lanyue.

Ever since Lanyue had sent Long Yan over with a generous gift, publicly announcing that the old Manor Lord had taken her in as his adoptive grandson, the two of them had not seen each other again.

Perhaps it was just as well they didn’t meet — if they did, who knew what shock might overcome him, and if he carelessly strangled her by accident, what then?

Her martial skill had improved a great deal by now, but there was always someone stronger out there — a handful of people who could end her life with a single strike.

“This is medicine I’ve prepared. Take it to Manor Lord Lanyue. If he refuses to take it, dissolve the pill in water and find a way to mix it into his food — it will help clear the poison from his body.”

“If it’s medicine prescribed by you, sir, the Manor Lord will surely be willing to take it.” Long Yan accepted it with both hands, his face full of gratitude.

Feng Jiu’er said nothing further, and after taking her leave, returned home.

But before she even reached Tianji Hall, she ran into Xiao Yingtao outside, who was just on her way back as well.

“Young Master, I heard that Old Master Feng fell ill again last night, and his condition isn’t good. Even the imperial physicians from the palace went and couldn’t improve his color. You… should you go take a look?”

Feng Jiu’er’s heart stirred. That they were able to summon an imperial physician was, of course, because Feng Qingyin now held an esteemed position as a Noble Consort within the palace.

But if even the imperial physician was at a loss, then the illness must truly be serious.

The medicine box she always carried with her was still slung over her shoulder. Hearing this, she leapt onto her horse at once, ready to leave again.

Xiao Yingtao chased after her, asking quietly, “Young Master, on what pretext will you go?”

After all, the Feng family had not invited her to come and treat the patient — showing up uninvited would surely look improper, wouldn’t it?

“I have my own explanation ready.” Her grandfather was ill — not going to see him would be unfilial. Besides, it had truly been a long time since she had returned to the Feng family at all.

At a time like this, Feng Qingyin might well be at the Feng Manor herself. Being someone so fond of vanity, she would surely never miss a chance to flaunt her glory and status.

Lost in thought, Feng Jiu’er soon found herself outside the gates of Feng Manor.

Rather than entering directly, she lingered by the back gate for a moment, and happened to see two elderly kitchen women coming out. After a moment’s thought, Feng Jiu’er suddenly rode her horse over, dismounting in front of them.

“Madam, your complexion doesn’t look quite right. Have you been having trouble in the privy lately?”

Seeing that this was a young man, and given the nature of the question, the old woman immediately grew flustered.

Feng Jiu’er said, “There’s no need to hide your illness out of embarrassment. Here is a prescription — take it to fill, and by tomorrow your symptoms should certainly improve.”

“This…” The old woman looked at her, somewhat puzzled. Why would some doctor on the street randomly hand out a prescription like this?

Still, this young man seemed open and easygoing, and more importantly, he was remarkably good-looking — so neither of them felt any particular distrust.

While they were still hesitating, Feng Jiu’er had already finished writing out the prescription and pressed it into the old woman’s hand.

Then she turned to the other old woman, frowning. “Madam, do your legs often cramp painfully at night?”

Hearing this, the woman nodded at once. “Yes, yes — these past few years, my legs cramp painfully at night quite often, and the next day they feel weak and without strength.”

“Madam, your legs are suffering from rheumatism.” In these times, rheumatism was actually quite common — most people simply couldn’t find the root cause.

Feng Jiu’er continued, “Here’s what we’ll do — I’ll write you a prescription. Go to Tianji Hall to collect the medicine. Today happens to be the day I, Feng Jiu, am out giving free consultations. Just tell them it’s a prescription written by Feng Jiu today, and Tianji Hall won’t charge you anything.”

“So you’re the miracle doctor Feng Jiu of Tianji Hall?” Both old women had clearly heard the name Tianji Hall before. Of course, the capital wasn’t that large, and Feng Jiu’s reputation had long since spread — it was hardly surprising they’d heard of it.

They simply hadn’t expected that a miracle doctor would take an interest in going out to give free consultations like this.

“That’s right.” Feng Jiu’er nodded, taking hold of her horse’s reins and turning to leave.

One of the women thought it over and immediately hurried after her. “Miracle Doctor, could you wait just a moment? Our master in this household is also ill. I… I’ll go find the steward. Please, miracle doctor, wait here.”

She winked at the other woman, then hurried back into Feng Manor.

The name Feng Jiu was indeed one many had heard of, and the master’s condition now seemed truly serious. Since the miracle doctor had, by happy coincidence, arrived right here, why not let him in to take a look?

After all, the miracle doctor himself had said today was his day for going out to treat people. Let him take a look — and if he managed to cure the master, she herself could even claim credit for it.

Someone had even said earlier that this miracle doctor wasn’t easy to invite at all — hadn’t the Duke himself once sent someone to request a house call, only to be refused?

If she could get Miracle Doctor Feng Jiu to come inside, that would be a tremendous achievement indeed!

Before long, the woman who had gone in, along with someone else, hurried back out. Feng Jiu seemed about to leave already, so the two of them quickened their steps to catch up.

But Feng Junzhuo, after taking a few steps, suddenly stopped, a flicker of confusion crossing his eyes.

That figure from behind… why did it look so much like Feng Jiu’er? But hadn’t Feng Jiu’er already passed from this world?

“Master, this is the miracle doctor Feng Jiu!” Seeing him stop, the old woman felt a flicker of anxiety, afraid she might lose her chance to claim credit.

She added hastily, “This miracle doctor is truly remarkable — he could tell my symptoms at a single glance, without the slightest error.”

It was only their conversation that seemed to draw Feng Jiu’s attention.

The other woman hurried over as well, saying urgently, “Master, the miracle doctor says he’s about to leave. Master, please hurry and invite him in to examine the Old Master.”

Just then Feng Jiu’er turned around, and Feng Junzhuo finally got a clear look at his face. Seeing it, he let out a breath of relief at once.

Thankfully, it wasn’t Feng Jiu’er after all.

Hidden in Jiu’er’s eyes, however, was a cold smile. His own daughter had gone missing on the battlefield, and yet upon seeing this young man, her father hadn’t grown excited at the thought she might have returned — instead, once he confirmed it wasn’t Feng Jiu’er, he had let out an emphatic sigh of relief.

What affection could Feng Junzhuo possibly have for this daughter of his?

If not for her grandfather’s sake, she truly would never have wished to return to this household at all.

“Sir, are you the miracle doctor Feng Jiu of Tianji Hall?” There had been rumors that Master Feng Jiu was a handsome young man — and now, seeing him in person, he truly was young.

Yet he wondered whether someone so young could really possess such skill.

Seeing Feng Jiu’s appearance, Feng Junzhuo grew somewhat hesitant.

“That is indeed me.” Feng Jiu gave him a smile. “Is it you who needs treatment, sir?”

“No…”

“Sir, there’s a bluish tint between your brows, and the veins on your forehead are showing. Haven’t you been sleeping well lately? Do you often wake at night needing to use the privy?”

Hearing this, Feng Junzhuo felt a touch of embarrassment, yet any doubt he might have had about this doctor’s skill had now been completely swept away.

To see through his symptoms at a single glance, without even taking his pulse — such skill was nothing short of astonishing.

Feng Junzhuo said at once, “My own troubles… well, they’re not urgent for now. Sir, would you be willing to come in with me and examine my father first?”
