Zhang Zhong Jiao – Chapter 81

When the sixth episode of “Flower Babies” aired, Chen Die, Wen Liang, and their family of four watched television together at home.

Wen Zhijing and Wen Zhiling, the two little treasures, found it fascinating to see themselves on television and kept bragging about it to their friends at school.

The little dog that they bought during the first episode of the show had also been brought home, transforming from a village mongrel to living in a mansion.

After dinner in the evening, everyone watched the show together.

Chen Die accompanied the brother and sister, while Wen Liang sat nearby with a laptop, checking emails.

The little yellow dog finished its dinner and came trotting happily to the living room, wagging its tail.

Everyone in the family except Wen Liang quite liked the little yellow dog, finding it cute and intelligent. Yet the dog particularly liked to nuzzle up to Wen Liang.

After eating and drinking its fill, it jumped onto the sofa, squeezed near Wen Liang, and pattered around eagerly seeking affection.

Wen Liang was typing on the keyboard. After sending out an email, he picked up the dog by the scruff of its neck and threw it back onto the floor.

Perhaps having figured out who the main breadwinner in this family was, the little yellow dog was undeterred. After being thrown down several times, it kept climbing back to Wen Liang’s side.

“Wen Zhijing.”

“Huh?”

The brother was watching television. Hearing his name, he turned his head.

Wen Liang held out the dog: “Take it away.”

The utility man Wen Zhijing had no choice but to get up and take the dog back, sitting cross-legged on the cushion again and placing the little yellow dog in the crook of his leg to play.

Chen Die came back to her senses and glanced at Wen Liang, walking over to his side. She raised her hand to massage his shoulders and leaned over to look at his computer: “Still not finished with work?”

Since there was still a final episode to be recorded, Wen Liang needed to handle some subsequent work in advance.

He lazily put his arm around Chen Die, drawing her into his embrace, and while typing with his right hand, he said in a low voice: “Almost done. I’ll finish after looking through this.”

As he spoke, he lowered his head to plant a kiss on Chen Die’s forehead: “Tired?”

Jingbao and Lingbao were already used to their parent’s behavior and calmly turned their heads to continue watching television.

“I’m not tired.”

Chen Die sat up and immediately saw the little yellow dog with its two front paws on Wen Zhiling, licking her face.

“Sister, don’t eat anything after touching the dog, and remember to wash your face in a bit.” Chen Die paused, remembering something, and asked, “Have you named it yet?”

Wen Liang’s fingers paused, and he looked down as well.

Wen Zhijing answered: “Xiao Huang.”

“Just Xiao Huang?” Chen Die laughed. “That’s so casual. Looking at its growth rate, I suspect it will soon be bigger than both of you.”

Wen Zhiling blinked: “Then what should we call it?”

She thought for a moment, tilted her head, and gave it a surname, “Wen Xiao Huang?”

“…”

Chen Die was amused by her and laughed, falling back against Wen Liang: “That’s good. It can be your little brother from now on.”

Wen Liang snorted softly: “You two have taken the Wen surname, so let it take your mother’s surname.”

Chen Die: “?”

This time Wen Zhiling reacted quickly: “Chen Xiao Huang?”

Chen Die punched Wen Liang: “What’s this? I gave birth to your son and daughter who both took your surname, and now for a dog, you’re suddenly so generous to let it take mine?”

Wen Liang laughed casually, closed his laptop, and tossed it aside, holding Chen Die as he replied lazily: “Yes.”

“…Shameless.” Chen Die gave him a sideways glance.

Although Chen Die had already given birth to children, she was still young when she delivered them. Since college, she had paid attention to skincare, spending half an hour in the bathroom each day just applying various lotions and potions, which Wen Liang always complained was too time-consuming.

But now, as Chen Die gave him that sideways glance, she looked no different from before, yet with an added charm.

Wen Liang was moved by the sight, his interest piqued. He called the nanny to take Wen Zhijing and Wen Zhiling upstairs to sleep, then promptly took Chen Die upstairs to begin his main course.

Early the next morning, they were supposed to record the first episode, but since it was still early, there was no rush to get up.

Chen Die had been worn out the night before, and she was still asleep when Wen Liang opened his eyes.

When they were trying to get pregnant, the two had been wild and unrestrained, but since truly experiencing what it meant to have “sweet burdens,” Wen Liang had become very cautious each time, not wanting to create another pair of Jingbao and Lingbao.

He lay on his side, staring at Chen Die in his arms for a while, his thoughts wandering.

He recalled what Chen Die looked like when they first met. The young girl’s personality had changed a lot, and her appearance had matured somewhat, becoming increasingly radiant and vibrant. Even now, with her face bare and eyes closed, she was still striking.

Chen Die rested on his arm. Wen Liang held her close, kissing her lips, his rough palm cupping her jaw and caressing it.

In her drowsy state, Chen Die squinted, and made a few soft sounds, wanting to push him away but unable to muster the strength as she had just woken up.

“Wen, Wen Liang.”

When she spoke, her voice was slightly husky, with the end of her words trailing off softly, yet it seemed to hook onto Wen Liang’s nerves.

His temple pulsed suddenly, and he deepened the kiss, murmuring: “Hmm?”

“We’re about to leave to record the show, stop it…”

Once Wen Liang acted like a beast, he couldn’t stop. The temperature in the bedroom rose, his breathing became heavier, and his hands grew increasingly forceful.

Just as they were getting intimate, the little yellow dog somehow pushed open the bedroom door, leaped up, and stepped right on Chen Die’s leg.

Chen Die was startled, feeling guilty like a thief. She suddenly found strength from somewhere and directly kicked Wen Liang, who had been on top of her, away.

Maybe she had kicked a sensitive spot, as Wen Liang hissed, frowning. It took a good while before he could breathe out and cursed softly at the wagging tail at the foot of the bed.

Chen Die muttered: “How did it get in?”

Wen Liang, having been rudely interrupted, combined with his morning grouchiness, looked increasingly grim. Finally, he declared: “I’ll slaughter it sooner or later.”

Chen Die laughed: “You can say that to me, but would you dare say it to the brother and sister?”

Wen Liang scoffed lightly: “What wouldn’t I dare to do?”

Chen Die couldn’t be bothered to argue with him about his dignity as a father.

With Xiao Huang causing such a disruption, the brother and sister soon ran into their bedroom as well. Wen Liang, having been thwarted and unable to continue, was in a bad mood for the entire day.

After breakfast at home, the family of four set off for the airport to participate in the recording of the final episode of “Flower Babies.”

As is customary with variety shows, the final episode typically adopts a sentimental tone, especially for family-oriented observational programs like theirs.

The content of this recording was simple, without difficult or easy tasks like the previous episodes that often made the children cry.

The four families sat together in a circle to chat, mostly discussing topics about their children. The little ones, having become familiar with each other over these days, had gone off to play together.

In the end, the production team asked the parents to enter separate rooms for individual interviews.

Although Wen Liang had done business interviews before, this was his first variety show interview. Chen Die worried that he wouldn’t know what to say, gave him extra instructions.

Wen Liang waved his hand, very confident: “Don’t worry.”

“…”

He walked into the interview room.

The host was already prepared, with questions collected from the show’s audience. Everyone had been quite curious about Wen Liang and Chen Die’s love story.

However, facing Wen Liang, the host didn’t dare to ask too much.

After a moment, the host approached nervously and asked: “Mr. Wen, can we start recording now?”

Wen Liang nodded calmly.

“We have several questions from the netizens, ten in total. If there are any you’re not comfortable answering, please let me know, and we can cut them out later,” the host said in advance.

“Alright, go ahead.”

“Everyone is particularly interested in your romance with Ms. Chen Die. The first question is: how long have you been together now?”

This question felt distant now. Wen Liang didn’t like reminiscing and hadn’t deliberately kept track of how long they’d been together.

He calculated in his mind and answered: “About ten years.”

Even the host was surprised by this number: “That long?”

“We met early on.”

“I’ve heard people talk about the seven-year itch in relationships. There were also rumors online about you and Ms. Chen Die breaking up in the past?”

Wen Liang paused but ultimately answered candidly: “Yes, we were apart for a time. I wasn’t good enough to her before, but fortunately, after many twists and turns, we’ve settled down.”

The host continued: “After the show aired, your interactions with Jingbao and Lingbao have drawn a lot of attention and laughter from the audience. Lingbao even cried once that her father didn’t love her. Although viewers saw this as a joke, did you ever explain this to our brother and sister?”

Wen Liang: “No.”

Host: “…”

His answer was too quick and decisive, leaving her unsure of what to ask next.

Fortunately, after a moment of silence, Wen Liang continued.

“But my wife must have already explained it to them. Although she never mentioned it to me, I know she wouldn’t let anyone misunderstand me, even if they’re our children who are too young to know better, speaking without filter.”

Wen Liang smiled, and his face, which had been cold until now, finally softened with this smile, no longer so intimidating.

Since turning thirty, he had gradually lost touch with his former friends, and with Chen Die and the two children, his entertainment activities had become fewer and fewer, and his personality had become much more stable than before.

Although it appeared that he had been constrained by family, no one knew how willingly he embraced it.

“Chen Die is a very soft-hearted person. Although I don’t care about others’ misunderstandings, and she knows I don’t care, she still worries about whether even the slightest thing might affect my mood. Between us, it’s more like she’s using her soft heart to protect me very meticulously.”

“I’m a businessman, I know how to find weaknesses and strike at the core. From the beginning, I knew Chen Die was soft-hearted, and I’ve used that to bully her many times.”

Seeing that Wen Liang had finally started to engage in the interview, the host relaxed and asked with a smile: “Was your past separation due to what you call ‘bullying’ Ms. Chen Die by taking advantage of her soft heart?”

“No.”

Wen Liang rubbed his face: “I have many flaws and am too lazy to change them. I’ve continued to take advantage of her soft heart to bully her many times.”

He recalled when they had first confirmed their relationship.

He knew, of course, that he had wronged Chen Die before. By all rights, he should have been the one to confess, along with an apology and promise.

But he refused. He was proud and arrogant, insisting that Chen Die admit her love for him first.

He smiled and added: “Fortunately, she’s used to indulging me.”

The host remarked with a laugh: “I see other families where husbands indulge their wives, but in your case, it’s Ms. Chen Die indulging you?”

Wen Liang: “She’s a good person. In this world, she might be the only one who can put up with me.”

“Many online say that your reaction to crying children is the most authentic response from parents in real life—sometimes being so angry that you want to stuff them back into the womb. Are you satisfied with this noisy family life of four?”

He answered lazily: “It’s not bad.”

“Last question: Chen Die was crowned Best Actress right after her debut and has won numerous awards since. She’s starred in many works that people love, and many of her on-screen relationships have left deep impressions on fans. Do you feel jealous or dissatisfied about this? After all, in dramas, Ms. Chen Die performs romantic scenes with many popular, handsome male celebrities.”

“I have nothing to be jealous of.” Wen Liang smiled, his chin slightly raised, seeming to return to the boldness of his youth when he first met Chen Die.

He declared arrogantly but firmly: “For Chen Die, no one could be better than me.”
