Zhang Zhong Jiao – Chapter 31

Wen Liang couldn’t be blamed too much.

The packaging of those wet wipes was quite misleading, especially since Chen Die had sent him a message saying to just get something with black packaging.

In the end, Chen Die didn’t let Wen Liang go buy again, belatedly realizing she could ask the makeup artist who was also staying at the hotel.

The next day, she was awakened by Chen Shao’s phone call.

Chen Die stretched her leg and reached her arm out from under the blanket to grab her phone from the bedside table.

As soon as she answered, Chen Shao said, “Save me.”

Chen Die was still bleary-eyed. “Huh?”

“Come to the company quickly.”

Chen Die was completely confused. “What’s going on?”

“If you keep asking, you’ll never see your brother again.”

Chen Die: ???

Who acknowledged you as my brother?

Chen Shao repeated “hurry up” three more times, then imperiously hung up on Chen Die.

Was this person truly mentally ill?

Chen Die didn’t rush. Since she’d been given time off, she leisurely stayed in bed for a while. Her leg was stiff when she first woke up.

After washing up, she ordered breakfast from the hotel, ate it in her room, changed her clothes, and by the time she was ready to leave, an hour and a half had passed.

She took the elevator down, and as soon as she walked out of the hotel, she saw that familiar car.

Immediately, Zhu Qicong got out, walked around the car, opened the trunk, took out a folding wheelchair, and pushed it in front of Chen Die. “Miss Chen, Chairman Wen instructed me that if you needed to go out, I should take you.”

Chen Die looked at the wheelchair with complicated feelings.

“I’m going to Yiming Entertainment.”

“Let me take you.”

Zhu Qicong pushed the wheelchair forward again, afraid that Miss Chen might still be angry with Chairman Wen and refuse to get in the car.

Fortunately, Chen Die just gave the wheelchair a disgusted look before limping to the car, opening the door, and getting in.

Chen Shao truly didn’t understand how such an annoying creature could exist in this world.

Originally, he hadn’t let others know that he had signed Chen Die, and Chen Shuyuan had never thought in that direction. But after yesterday’s incident, Chen Shuyuan somehow learned that one of the culprits who had elevated Chen Die to her current position was Chen Shao.

Without a word, early this morning, the princess stormed into his company like a shrew to confront him.

The princess only acted sweet and lovely in front of her grandfather and father. With others, her temperament was utterly detestable.

Of course, Chen Shao wasn’t a good person either.

After having his assistant stop the princess, he immediately called Chen Die.

He didn’t want to have a shouting match with a shrew-like Chen Shuyuan. He just wanted to call Chen Die over to attract Chen Shuyuan’s fury, giving himself some peace.

But after waiting and waiting without seeing Chen Die arrive, Chen Shuyuan managed to break through the multiple layers of assistants and finally invaded the CEO’s office.

An hour later.

Chen Shao felt he was starting to hallucinate from all the noise. The words Chen Shuyuan had been yelling kept repeating and circling in his ears.

Buzzing continuously.

Chen Shao pressed a button, and soothing light music flowed through the office.

Finally rescuing his eardrums that had been tortured for an hour.

There were two knocks on the office door.

The assistant said, “Mr. Chen, Miss Chen Die is here.”

Chen Shao turned his office chair and opened his eyes.

Even though Chen Die had fallen from a horse and gone to the hospital just yesterday, at first glance she still looked as glamorous as ever. Compared to the torture Chen Shao had just endured, it only made him more frustrated.

His two sisters, one real and one fake, were each more annoying than the other.

The assistant brought Chen Die into the office and then left. Chen Die didn’t stand on ceremony with him, sitting down across from him. “What did you call me for?”

“I’m not your brother anymore.”

Chen Die nodded. “Okay, Mr. Chen, what did you call me for?”

“…” Chen Shao straightened his back. “Chen Shuyuan just came here and made a scene.”

Chen Die raised her eyebrows.

“Did she do that yesterday?” Chen Shao asked.

“I think so.”

“How is it that Wen Liang allowed Chen Shuyuan to still have that leg to run over here today?” Chen Shao narrowed his peach blossom eyes, looking at her languidly. “Little sister, your charm seems to have diminished.”

Chen Die rolled her eyes, seeing that Chen Shao was just causing trouble for no reason.

“You called me here just to say this nonsense?”

“Between siblings,” Chen Shao waved his arm, “what’s wrong with maintaining our relationship?”

As he spoke, he leaned closer across the desk. “Little sister, are you interested in getting rid of Chen Shuyuan? I’m sick of her.”

“No,” Chen Die said bluntly. She put her hands in her pockets and leaned back in the chair, looking up. “I have no interest in your entire Chen family.”

Chen Shao clicked his tongue.

As he finished speaking, the assistant connected the intercom.

“Mr. Chen, Old Master Chen is here.”

Chen Die was startled.

The Chen family’s business empire was established by Old Master Chen years ago. Now in his eighties, his physical health had remained robust. Though he had delegated some authority to his children, the real power of the Chen family was firmly grasped in his own hands.

Soon after the assistant’s notification, Old Master Chen pushed open the door.

Despite his advanced age, the old master looked energetic, with his beard and hair neatly trimmed, walking in with large strides using a cane.

Among the Chen family members, Chen Die had the best impression of Old Master Chen.

After she began living with Wen Liang, Old Master Chen secretly came to find her several times, hoping she would return to live with the Chen family. He had promised that the other children of her generation wouldn’t bully her, but Chen Die had always refused.

Old Master Chen couldn’t do anything—he couldn’t exactly kidnap a child back to the Chen family. He just left his phone number with her, saying that if she ever needed help, she could contact him.

That number had remained in Chen Die’s phone contacts, but she had never dialed it.

She could understand the older generation’s emphasis on blood ties, but she truly couldn’t understand or forgive how they had casually and carelessly disrupted her life without considering the consequences.

Chen Die turned around.

Old Master Chen saw her and quickly recognized her. He opened his mouth, hesitated for a moment, then said, “Chen Die is here too.”

It sounded like a normal greeting.

Old Master Chen had just learned that Chen Die had signed with Yiming Entertainment and had come to ask Chen Shao about it. He hadn’t expected to encounter Chen Die as well.

The assistant brought in three cups of tea.

Old Master Chen sat down next to Chen Die and asked gently, “Are you alright? I saw in the newspaper that you fell from a horse?”

Chen Die said, “I’m fine.”

Beside them, Chen Shao immediately interjected, “Fine my ass. Grandfather, look at her leg. It was Chen Shuyuan who did this to her yesterday.”

Chen Die: “…”

Even in front of Old Master Chen, Chen Shao had no intention of pretending to have a harmonious sibling relationship. He didn’t care that there was no evidence proving Chen Shuyuan was responsible and simply tattled.

But he did successfully divert Old Master Chen’s attention to Chen Die’s leg.

She was wearing long pants, so the extent of the injury wasn’t visible.

“Yuanyuan did this?”

Old Master Chen hadn’t known about this before.

Chen Die wasn’t easily bullied, but with Chen Shao’s dramatic embellishment beside her, she felt like she was being kicked when she was down. It made it awkward for her to speak up.

She pressed her lips together. “Not sure who it was.”

“See that!” Chen Shao slammed the table forcefully. “Grandfather, Chen Shuyuan is truly too much! She’s bullied Chen Die to the point where she doesn’t even dare speak up!”

Chen Die: “…”

What was wrong with this person?

Chen Die realized she truly couldn’t spend too much time with Chen Shao. On average, she wanted to hit him once every ten minutes.

Old Master Chen frowned and asked Chen Shao, “What happened? Explain clearly.”

So Chen Shao rattled off a highly embellished account of yesterday’s events to Old Master Chen, adding plenty of dramatic details.

…Men’s desire for revenge was terrifying.

Chen Die kicked him under the table with her uninjured left leg. “Just shut up already.”

Old Master Chen was quite surprised by her action. He looked at her, then at Chen Shao, and asked, “You two have a good relationship?”

Chen Die said, “He’s my boss.”

Chen Shao said, “Pretty good.”

“How’s your leg? Did Ah Shao send someone to pick you up today?” Old Master Chen asked.

Chen Die answered, “It’s okay. I came by myself.”

Old Master Chen gave Chen Shao a disapproving look, then continued asking Chen Die, “I heard you’re living alone now?” He was very careful to avoid mentioning Wen Liang.

Chen Die knew what he was about to say and remained silent.

Sure enough, Old Master Chen continued, “I know you’re busy with work, but if you have time, why not come back home to live? Your leg is injured, and you need someone to take care of you.”

“Back where?” Chen Die laughed softly, calmly questioning, “Can that even be called home?”

“I believe your injury has something to do with Yuanyuan. I’ll ask her about this when I get back. I understand if you don’t want to live under the same roof as her. Or is there somewhere else you’d like to stay that’s more convenient? I can arrange for someone to take care of you.”

“No need,” Chen Die said.

Old Master Chen was speaking politely, so Chen Die couldn’t keep a stern face. “I have no intention of going back.”

Old Master Chen sighed, not knowing what else to say.

After all these years, Chen Die’s attitude had remained just as firm.

He chatted with Chen Shao for a while longer and then stood up to leave. He had noticed that Chen Die and Chen Shao seemed to get along well, thinking this might be a breakthrough, so he didn’t want to stand between them at his age.

After he left, Chen Die also got up to say goodbye.

“Little sister.”

Chen Die turned her head and looked at him.

“Are you not interested in that family fortune?” Chen Shao raised his eyebrows.

“You don’t seem interested either.”

Otherwise, he wouldn’t have behaved so impudently in front of Old Master Chen.

Chen Shao smiled and patted the desk. “I have my own company. I won’t starve to death.”

“What a coincidence,” Chen Die blinked. “I should also have the ability to keep myself from starving.”

It was noon when she left Yiming Entertainment.

The autumn sun was no longer harsh but pleasantly warm. A row of maple trees had been planted along the small path, their leaves burning red.

Originally, after Old Master Chen’s “enlightenment,” Chen Shao finally found his conscience and asked if she wanted a driver to take her back. Chen Die refused. Walking downstairs, she discovered that Zhu Qicong was still waiting.

Chen Die walked over. “Don’t you have work to do?”

Zhu Qicong said, “Chairman Wen has temporarily handed over the upcoming work matters to others.”

Zhu Qicong took her back to the film set. Chen Die didn’t want to affect his work, so she let him leave first.

Entering the set, Qi Cheng was the first to see her and quickly walked over. “Are you alright? Why did you come back? I was planning to visit you after filming finished today.”

“I’m fine. I just came to see how things were going. I’m much better now,” Chen Die said. “I’m sorry my situation has affected your filming schedule.”

Among their group, Qi Cheng had the fullest schedule. Occasionally, he had to make time to record shows, and right after the scheduled end of filming, he had another program to participate in.

Because many of Chen Die’s later scenes involved action sequences, and it was unrealistic for her to continue filming action scenes right after being injured yesterday, Feng Zhi moved all of Qi Cheng’s scenes forward, leaving the scenes between the male and female leads to be filmed after Chen Die recovered.

“There’s nothing to be sorry about. Falling from a horse was completely unexpected.”

Chen Die slowly made her way over.

But she quickly noticed something strange.

Previously, the crew members had treated her as a newcomer, interacting with her quite casually. But today, as soon as she arrived, her treatment immediately rose to the same level as Qi Cheng’s.

As soon as she approached the seats, someone immediately stood up to offer her the closest seat.

Then someone brought her a cup of water, and their way of addressing her changed from “Chen Die” to “Sister.”

Though “Sister” did make her sound a bit old.

Little Qi, who usually got along best with her, had just finished touching up Wang Yunxi’s makeup for her scene. She stood to the side, watching Chen Die, hesitating whether to come over.

Chen Die waved to her, and when she came closer, asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Sister Chen Die…”

Chen Die raised her hand to interrupt, reminding her, “You’re older than me.”

“…Then what should I call you?”

“What did you call me before?”

Little Qi hesitantly asked, “Would that be too disrespectful?”

Chen Die was amused. “What’s going on with all of you?”

Little Qi stared at her for a while, then sighed, moving closer to whisper in her ear, “Well, it’s because of what happened yesterday. Everyone just found out that you and Chairman Wen are boyfriend and girlfriend. You’ve been so low-key, never mentioning it before.”

Chen Die finally understood why everyone was acting so strangely.

“No, we’re not in that kind of relationship,” Chen Die said.

Little Qi asked curiously, “Then what is it?”

“No relationship.”

“Pfft.” Little Qi pouted. “Who believes that? By the way, when we were chatting privately before, we thought Director Lu was interested in you.”

Before Chen Die could respond, Lu Chuan walked over and said quietly, “Chen Die, I’d like to speak with you.”

Little Qi immediately ran off tactfully, leaving the seat for Lu Chuan.

“I haven’t had a chance to apologize to you about yesterday,” Lu Chuan said.

“Hmm? What are you apologizing for?”

“Chen Shuyuan came to the set because of me. It was my failure to handle my relationship with her properly that led her to act that way, so I need to apologize to you.”

That wasn’t the only reason Chen Shuyuan had done this.

Chen Die pressed her lips together and waved her hand. “This isn’t your fault.”

“I’ve made it clear to you before that I like you,” Lu Chuan said, looking into her eyes. “Yesterday, I clarified everything with Chen Shuyuan. I won’t let her hurt you again. Can you tell me what you’re thinking now?”

Chen Die’s hand holding the water cup paused as she turned to look at him.

“My thoughts haven’t changed from before,” she said straightforwardly. “Lu Chuan, I don’t think we’re compatible.”

“Is it because of Wen Liang?”

Chen Die was startled. “Hmm?”

“Is he your ex-boyfriend?”

“…”

Lu Chuan was truly perceptive.

His ability to observe people was exceptional.

At the same time, the voice of the central figure of their discussion suddenly appeared behind them. “Chen Die.”

The man’s voice wasn’t loud. His tone was even, his voice magnetic and deep.

But as soon as it sounded, it immediately attracted the attention of everyone around.

Wen Liang also noticed the gazes turning toward him. He nodded slightly in acknowledgment, then walked to Chen Die’s side and asked in a low voice, “Why are you running around with an injured leg?”

“…”

Chen Die swore that in all the years she had known Wen Liang, she had never heard him use such a gentle tone.

It immediately gave her goosebumps.

It was too unfamiliar.

Feng Zhi, who had been focused on filming, turned to look over as well, only now noticing that Chen Die had arrived.

“Why has Chairman Wen come at this time? Is it to see Chen Die?” Feng Zhi asked.

“Yes, I came to take her to lunch. Is she free to leave now?”

“Of course, she can go. We gave her the day off today anyway,” Feng Zhi smiled, teasing, “Chairman Wen is hard-hearted, only letting us know about your relationship when filming is almost over.”

If yesterday they were only suspicious, today with him coming to pick her up for lunch, it could be confirmed.

Wen Liang curved his lips in a slight smile, his gaze casually sweeping past Lu Chuan beside them. He raised his hand and gently put his arm around Chen Die’s shoulder. “We haven’t officially established our relationship yet. I’m still pursuing Chen Die.”

Chen Die couldn’t move her leg, so she could only let Wen Liang’s arm rest on her shoulder.

But had this dog of a man taken the wrong medicine today??
