172: Let’s Find Her Together!

Kang Wei didn’t know how he made it out the door.

He couldn’t think about taking anything with him.

After his car accident, his family had forbidden him from driving. These past two years, he’d focused on building his career. Beyond his other investment ventures, his furniture brand had grown increasingly successful. Now people called him Boss Kang or Director Kang, and he truly lived a life with chauffeur service!

If Kang Wei had been thinking rationally, he should have called his driver to take him to the airport.

But Kang Wei couldn’t wait for the driver now. His heart had been hollowed out, and he couldn’t care less about family rules.

He didn’t know where the car keys were. The Jeep 212 that Du Zhaohui had given him as compensation was parked in the residential compound.

Right, Shao Guangrong often borrowed the car – where had he put the keys?

Kang Wei’s hands trembled as he called Shao Guangrong to ask about the car keys. Shao Guangrong sensed something was wrong. Kang Wei had other cars, and this Jeep 212 was just collecting dust. Why was he suddenly asking about its keys?

“Kangzi, what’s happening? Why do you need to drive? Didn’t your chauffeur return to Beijing with you?”

Kang Wei’s throat felt blocked. He couldn’t explain to Shao Guangrong, just hoarsely asked about the keys.

Shao Guangrong felt Kang Wei had lost his rationality. Under these circumstances, he definitely couldn’t let Kang Wei drive. He pressed until Kang Wei finally spoke:

“Xiao Dan, something’s happened to Xiao Dan. I need to go to the Northwest to find her.”

Shao Guangrong’s heart sank.

In the past, he would have thought Kang Wei couldn’t let go, still being so concerned about Sun Yujun two years after their breakup – what kind of man was that? But only after experiencing it himself did Shao Guangrong understand. He asked himself if he could forget Xiao You in two years… the answer was no!

“How are you getting there? You can’t drive – that’s too slow. What time is your flight? I’ll come take you!”

“4 o’clock.”

Was it 4 o’clock?

Kang Wei struggled to look at his watch, unable to distinguish between the hour and minute hands, completely unaware of the current time.

Shao Guangrong sighed with relief over the phone: “There’s time. It’s not even 1 o’clock yet. Wait at home for me to pick you up. Use this time to calm down and think about what to do when you get to the Northwest. How can you help Xiao Dan if you’re running around like a headless fly?”

True, running around like a headless fly wouldn’t help Xiao Dan.

But he had no connections in the Northwest – what help could he offer?

Kang Wei covered his face. Xiao Dan had been missing in the Gobi Desert for four days.

Everyone was heading home for New Year – why hadn’t Xiao Dan come home?

Why was she so stubborn, so foolish? Even if she wanted to serve others, she needed to stay alive first!

That was the Gobi Desert in the Northwest, the most desolate place, now in the coldest winter season. People couldn’t find food in the desert, neither could wild animals. How dangerous it was to get lost there—

Kang Wei couldn’t bear to think further.

He refused to accept the possibility that Sun Yujun had become wolf food.

Yes, he had to help. Even if there was just a slight chance, he had to save Xiao Dan.

Kang Wei called Kang Lianming, struggling to explain the situation. Kang Lianming took it seriously:

“You go to the Northwest first. She’s a Huaqing University student who went to teach in response to the Ministry of Education’s call. The government won’t ignore this – people are already conducting rescue operations. I’ll ask about the situation there immediately. Xiaowei, you need to stay calm especially now. No matter how important Xiao Dan is to you, you need to be clearheaded. The calmer you are, the better chance you have of saving her. The more panicked you are, the more likely you’ll lose her. Uncle knows you’ve matured a lot these past two years – it’s time to put that maturity to use!”

“Uncle, I understand!”

He couldn’t break down. If he did, only others would search for Xiao Dan, and Kang Wei couldn’t accept that.

After hanging up, Kang Wei forced himself to wash his face to clear his mind. Cold water mixed with salty drops on his face, and in the mirror, he saw his eyes were bloodshot.

He needed to stay calm.

Shao Guangrong arrived in less than half an hour, honking frantically downstairs:

“Come down! Don’t take your car – I’ll drive you!”

Kang Wei wiped his face hard and hurried downstairs.

Cold wind whipped at his neck and face, stinging his skin, but he didn’t care at all.

Xiao Dan must be suffering much more right now.

She was lost in the desert – did she have any food with her?

She must be starving.

She must be thirsty.

She must be freezing.

When Shao Guangrong asked, Kang Wei didn’t know the specific reason, only that this was Sun Yujun’s fourth day missing.

Shao Guangrong didn’t comment, just focused on driving.

When they arrived, he got out with Kang Wei and walked ahead of him:

“Come on, why are you standing there? My work unit should be starting holidays these days too. I’ll go to the Northwest with you. More people means more help – let’s find Xiao Dan together.”

Kang Wei couldn’t refuse.

This was why even though Shao Guangrong used to be a big-mouthed drunk, neither Kang Wei nor Zhou Cheng had ever looked down on him.

Because when it came to loyalty, Shao Guangrong was second to none.

“Good, let’s find Xiao Dan together.”

Shao Guangrong comforted him, “Heaven protects good people. I figure since Xiao Dan went to the Northwest to do good deeds, she’ll be safe. When I say let’s find Xiao Dan, I mean in two ways, understand? What’s between you and Xiao Dan isn’t anything else – it’s just yourselves. Kangzi, I’ve figured it out – face and pride mean nothing. Two people being together is better than anything!”

Kang Wei nodded.

He heard Shao Guangrong’s words but didn’t agree.

He wasn’t going to reconcile.

Xiao Dan’s life was most important. If Sun Yujun could return safely, even if it meant he could never be with her in this life, Kang Wei would accept that.

Life was above everything.

Being alive was best.

Love was secondary.

Kang Wei arrived before Xia Xiaolan and Gu Zhengqing, with Shao Guangrong as an addition. Xia Xiaolan looked at Gu Zhengqing.

Gu Zhengqing waved them over: “Come together, we’ll talk on the plane!”

Sun Yujun’s teaching location was remote, several hundred kilometers from the nearest airport. After landing at the local airport, they took a helicopter. They’d left Beijing at 4 PM, but by the time they reached Sun Yujun’s village, it was deep into the night.

“No one in the village is resting – they’re all searching for Teacher Sun, along with county police and militia…”

An official-looking person approached them.

It was now the night of Sun Yujun’s fourth day missing.

Kang Wei didn’t go inside, deliberately standing in the courtyard. The Northwest winter was truly too cold, with huge temperature differences between day and night. How could Sun Yujun endure in the desert?

“Does the aircraft have fuel? I want to search for her!”

Shao Guangrong wanted to hit him.

What good was fuel when none of them knew how to fly?

Xia Xiaolan stopped Kang Wei:

“Kang Wei, you’d better hear the situation. Senior Sun didn’t disappear alone. Two brothers in the village are her students. These brothers have no parents, only a grandmother. The three of them survive by raising sheep. This winter, wolves killed several of their sheep. They took hunting rifles to get revenge on the wolves, and Senior Sun went missing while trying to find them!”
