Chapter 64: Infrared Light

Chu Li didn’t answer Mu Yunjin’s question, but simply turned and left.

Mu Yunjin pursed her lips and glared at Chu Li’s retreating figure, silently grumbling to herself that it would be like traveling with a half-blind person, yet he still insisted on moving at night.

At the thought of Shuiyun Temple, Mu Yunjin felt a heaviness settle over her.

That thousand-year-old tree, the modern alarm sound that trapped Consort Rong—these were matters she pondered repeatedly but couldn’t make sense of.

Somewhere deep in her consciousness, she felt something pulling at her.

As night fell, Mu Yunjin sat in her bedchamber, hearing someone gently knock on the outer door, followed by Ding Xian’s voice: “Princess Consort, we can depart now.”

“I understand,” Mu Yunjin replied with resignation.

She rose, found a ribbon, and simply tied her hair in a ponytail. She had deliberately chosen clothes that would be easy to move in, then walked out.

In the courtyard, Chu Li was sitting at the stone table drinking tea. Hearing movement from Mu Yunjin’s doorway, he turned to look.

His brows immediately furrowed, and he spoke with some disdain, “Why are you dressed like that? This Prince isn’t taking you to kill someone.”

Even Ding Xian couldn’t help but smile. “Princess Consort, dressed like this, you truly have the air of a female warrior.”

“I am a female warrior,” Mu Yunjin raised her chin slightly. Though displeased, she had no intention of going back to change.

“Let’s go,” Mu Yunjin stepped forward, looking at Chu Li.

Chu Li nodded.

The three left through the back door of the Sixth Prince’s Mansion, where the black xuan-wood carriage was waiting.

Mu Yunjin and Chu Li sat inside the carriage, with Ding Xian driving at the front.

Sitting in the carriage, the light was dim. Chu Li didn’t take out Mu Yunjin’s jade pendant, and the two simply sat upright in the darkness.

Mu Yunjin leaned back, arms crossed, inexplicably feeling tense.

Soon, the carriage stopped.

“Your Highness, Princess Consort, we’ve arrived,” came Ding Xian’s voice from outside.

Hearing this, Mu Yunjin rose first and walked toward the carriage exit. Before leaving, she turned her head to look at Chu Li. “Wait a moment, let me bring the lantern in.”

Chu Li paused, a flicker passing through his eyes.

After getting off the carriage, Mu Yunjin took the lantern from Ding Xian, then lifted the carriage curtain and shone the light inside.

Chu Li followed the light and slowly stepped down from the carriage.

“Where are we going?” Mu Yunjin asked after they had alighted.

“To the chamber where Master Kongshi lived,” Chu Li replied calmly.

Hearing this, Mu Yunjin furrowed her brows. “Going to a deceased person’s room in the middle of the night—isn’t that creepy?”

“With this Prince here, what are you afraid of?” Chu Li countered, giving Mu Yunjin a cool glance.

Mu Yunjin pressed her lips together, blocked by Chu Li’s words and unable to retort. So she could only cross her arms and walk toward Master Kongshi’s residence.

About a quarter of an hour later, the three stopped in front of a chamber named ‘Siyuan’ (Thinking of the Distant).

At this time, Master Huaiyuan was already waiting at the door.

“Greetings, Sixth Prince, Sixth Prince’s Consort,” Master Huaiyuan bowed to the two.

Chu Li nodded slightly. “Master, please lead us inside.”

“Yes.”

With those words, Master Huaiyuan took out a key, unlocked the door of the Siyuan chamber, and with a creaking sound, pushed open the door.

At this moment, the room was pitch black.

Seeing this, Master Huaiyuan lit the prepared lanterns, and he and Ding Xian carried them as they entered.

Upon entering, Mu Yunjin discovered that the room was very simply furnished. It contained only a wooden bed and a wooden bookshelf. The bed was empty, while the bookshelf held several books.

After looking around, everyone focused their attention on those books.

Mu Yunjin was also curious. She walked over, picked up a book, and flipped through it. After reading a few pages, she found it contained mostly scriptures.

Seeing these scriptures, Mu Yunjin frowned slightly, closed the book, and pulled out another one.

Chu Li and Master Huaiyuan watched this scene, exchanging a glance.

When Mu Yunjin opened this book, surprise flashed in her eyes.

Because at the end of this book, the page numbers were marked with Arabic numerals 1, 2, 3, rather than the common one, two, three.

This made Mu Yunjin’s heart skip a beat as she secretly wondered: Could this Master Kongshi truly have come from modern times?

With this thought, Mu Yunjin pressed her lips together slightly. The fact that she, as a modern person, appeared here didn’t mean there weren’t similar cases before her.

With these thoughts, Mu Yunjin became even more curious about Master Kongshi.

Flipping through the book with 1, 2, 3 markings, Mu Yunjin was particularly patient, turning the pages one by one. After going through more than ten pages, she saw two English letters.

F. W.

Mu Yunjin’s brow furrowed even more. She closed the book and looked at the cover, but there wasn’t a single word on it.

“F. W.,” Mu Yunjin murmured to herself, her thoughts drifting to the modern alarm sound.

Darkness, alarm sound, formation, F. W…

As Mu Yunjin thought of these, a straight line seemed to suddenly form in her mind, connecting them all.

After a while, Mu Yunjin formed a bold hypothesis.

If she remembered correctly, the code F. W. should refer to the English physicist F. W. Herschel, the scientist who discovered the principles of infrared light.

So, the flat path where nothing was visible to the naked eye but still blocked things was using the principle of infrared light.

Therefore, when someone tried to approach, an alarm would sound.

But infrared barriers could be easily breached, yet the formation completely prevented people from entering. It seemed that Master Kongshi had also infused his power into it.

So with the infrared light present, people couldn’t see the formation set up by Master Kongshi’s power.

This Master Kongshi was truly remarkable.

With this realization, Mu Yunjin finally felt that she had completely clarified the matter. She was one hundred percent certain that Master Kongshi must also have come from modern times.

“Mu Yunjin, you’ve figured it out, haven’t you?”

From the beginning until now, Chu Li hadn’t missed a single expression on Mu Yunjin’s face—from her initial surprise to her final look of revelation. He knew she had discovered the secret of the formation.

Hearing Chu Li’s voice, Mu Yunjin’s thoughts returned. She glanced at Chu Li, then looked around, and a realization dawned on her.

It seemed he had been suspicious of her for some time.

“This old monk has seen this book before, but the characters in it are truly strange. This old monk has never understood them.”

“It seems today the Sixth Prince’s Consort has deciphered these characters?”

Seeing that the two had already made their determination, Mu Yunjin felt she couldn’t evade further. She could only speak with lowered eyes, “I might know the principle behind the formation.”

“But I may not be able to break it.”

As a modern special agent, she had encountered these invisible infrared beams before, but typically needed devices like night vision goggles. However, this was a world from thousands of years ago—where would such things exist?

“Are these all of Master Kongshi’s belongings?” Mu Yunjin raised an eyebrow.

“There are some more in the storehouse. Would the Princess Consort like this old monk to take you there?” Huaiyuan asked.

Mu Yunjin nodded. “Take me to see.”

Walking toward the storehouse, Chu Li pressed his lips together, his brows furrowed. He glanced at Mu Yunjin. “How confident are you?”

“I’ll know after I see the storehouse,” Mu Yunjin raised an eyebrow as she stepped into the storehouse.

Master Huaiyuan led Mu Yunjin to a large chest and opened it. “These are all of Master Kongshi’s belongings.”

Mu Yunjin made a sound of acknowledgment, then began to search.

At this moment, the top layer of the chest contained mostly kasayas (monk’s robes) and prayer beads. Mu Yunjin grew impatient and continued digging deeper.

In the end, she searched through the entire chest but couldn’t find what she was looking for.

“Nothing?” Chu Li stepped forward, frowning as he looked at Mu Yunjin.

Mu Yunjin shook her head and sighed slightly, feeling somewhat dejected. Then she extended her hand to put Master Kongshi’s kasayas and prayer beads back into the chest one by one.

When her hand touched the last kasaya, Mu Yunjin exclaimed softly, her eyes lighting up with joy. She picked up the kasaya and tore it in half.

Master Huaiyuan was about to intervene, but due to Chu Li’s presence, he could only watch this scene. “Amitabha, what a sin, what a sin.”

After tearing open the kasaya, a small black disc fell out. Mu Yunjin bent down to pick it up and held it to her eye for a look.

She then snapped her fingers. “Let’s go to the dark chamber.”

A moment later, the group arrived once again at the formation they had seen before.

Mu Yunjin held the small disc tightly, then breathed on it and gently wiped it with the corner of her clothes.

She then squinted one eye and looked ahead through the small disc.

When she saw countless red light beams arranged in complex patterns, she knew all her earlier conjectures were true.

The alarm sound came from infrared beams.

With this thought, Mu Yunjin put away the disc, reflecting that since there was an alarm sound, there must be a mechanism controlling it.

Otherwise, the alarm wouldn’t sound without reason.

Thinking of this, Mu Yunjin gave a mocking laugh and shook her head helplessly. It seemed that after arriving in ancient times, Master Kongshi hadn’t been idle at all.

He had thoroughly researched modern technology.

“Take a look,” Mu Yunjin placed the small disc in her palm and handed it to Chu Li.

Chu Li looked at the black disc, took it, and then held it to his eye to look forward.

In an instant, Chu Li’s expression changed.

Seeing this, Master Huaiyuan also became curious. “Your Highness, let this old monk see.”

Chu Li handed the disc to Master Huaiyuan.

Master Huaiyuan took the disc and looked through it, then exclaimed in surprise, “Such a wondrous and hidden formation exists in this world!”

“What is this thing? How can it see what our naked eyes cannot?” Master Huaiyuan was also quite curious about the small disc in his hand.

Mu Yunjin curved her lips slightly. “It can’t be resolved quickly. Is there any mechanism hidden somewhere in this dark chamber?”

“Yes, right beneath those red lights,” Master Huaiyuan pointed to the floor beneath the infrared beams ahead.
