Chapter 55: Bride

Zhou Yu thought to herself, Qing Hang is quite reliable. “That won’t happen. He treats Wanyue especially well.”

“They must have just gotten together recently, right? Still in the honeymoon phase,” Yang Huimin had only heard one sentence earlier. Cheng Wanyue’s lovey-dovey manner was even unfamiliar to her. “With Yueyue’s temperament, who knows if it will last for days. Is she bringing her boyfriend home for dinner?”

Cheng Yuzhou said, “He’s coming for the wedding, so it’s a good opportunity to meet the family.”

“This child, she didn’t tell us earlier. We haven’t prepared anything.”

“She wanted to give you a surprise. No need for preparations.”

“Whether it’s a surprise or not doesn’t matter, as long as it’s not a shock. Her father was just talking about it a few days ago, saying that Yan Ci still hasn’t dated anyone, and how suitable they would be together. Isn’t childhood sweethearts the trend now?”

Yan Ci had grown up under Cheng Guo’an’s watch, and they knew everything about him.

“Wanyue and Yan Ci are just friends,” Zhou Yu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Aunt, don’t worry. The person Wanyue likes is no worse than Yan Ci.”

Yang Huimin shook her head helplessly. “Forget it, worrying serves no purpose. We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

She had initially wanted to knock on the door to find Cheng Yuzhou for something, but with Cheng Wanyue’s interruption, she’d forgotten about it.

The door was closed. Knowing the room had good soundproofing, Cheng Wanyue turned on the speaker, put the phone aside, and lay on the sofa, casually flipping through a magazine.

Qing Hang had just left the director’s office. He stood in the spacious, bright corridor calling Cheng Wanyue. Outside the glass windows, the sky was tinted a light pink by the sunset, and the sunlight stretched its shadow long across the floor.

He had barely rested today, busy from morning until evening.

But now he had a girlfriend.

He heard Cheng Wanyue constantly yawning. “Didn’t sleep well?”

Cheng Wanyue had woken up very early today and only napped for half an hour at noon. “I should help a bit too. The wedding isn’t inviting too many people, just some relatives, friends, classmates, and colleagues.”

“Who’s the best man?”

“You don’t know him.”

If he didn’t know, that meant it wasn’t Yan Ci.

The main characters of a wedding are the bride and groom. The bridesmaids and groomsmen merely stand together, perhaps arm in arm.

Qing Hang suddenly realized he was being too petty and awkwardly changed the subject. “How’s Meiqiu? Is it adapting well?”

“It’s next to me,” Cheng Wanyue would pet Nuomi one moment and then rub Meiqiu the next. “It felt a bit uneasy the first night, but it’s much better today. If you can video call, I’ll show it to you.”

Qing Hang heard her calling Meiqiu “baby” on the other end of the phone.

“I want to see you.”

“…Then I’ll let you take a look.”

Cheng Wanyue hung up and switched to a WeChat video call. Qing Hang held his phone low, giving a deadly camera angle.

She could see the white coat he was wearing, with two pens in his chest pocket. His Adam’s apple was particularly prominent from this angle, but before she could say anything, he was called away by a colleague. He hurriedly ended the video, only managing to say that he would call her again after work that evening.

Chi Yue was still waiting for her to send her location. After some thought, since she was asking for a favor, it would be better to talk in person, so she arranged a place to meet.

Chi Yue had a performance yesterday and was taking a few days to visit Nanjing.

He was well-known in his circle, having one foot in the entertainment industry, yet his world was much simpler than the complex entertainment scene.

Cheng Wanyue arrived ten minutes late. Chi Yue had ordered a coffee and a dessert for her.

He placed a small jewelry box on the table, containing the earring she had lost.

“Thanks,” Cheng Wanyue had left with a mission. Although Chi Yue appeared to be a big shot and not easy to ask for favors, she had to try. “What are your plans for the 5th?”

Chi Yue’s original plan was to return to Beijing on the 5th. “If you’re asking me out, I’m available 24 hours that day.”

“I’d like to ask for your help. My brother is getting married, and the band we booked ran into a small problem. You won’t need to sing for long, just five or six songs.”

“I can help, but how will you thank me?”

Cheng Wanyue was generous. “Name your price. I can afford it, no matter how expensive.”

Chi Yue raised an eyebrow with a smile. “As it happens, I’m not short on money either.”

“Then I’ll treat you to a meal?” Cheng Wanyue had seen Chi Yue’s performance videos. His pride was well-founded. “If your demands are too excessive, I’ll find someone else.”

Her sincerity wasn’t great, but Chi Yue happened to appreciate this approach.

“I’m quite easy to deal with. Now that you’ve found me, you won’t have the chance to find anyone else—they’re not as good as I am anyway. I’m assuming there will be many flowers at the wedding venue? I’m allergic to pollen, so I’ll need to wear a mask.”

This meant he had agreed.

Cheng Wanyue hadn’t expected it to be this easy. A perfect wedding was most important; she could owe this favor now and find an opportunity to repay it later.

“That’s no problem. Wearing a mask won’t affect your good looks.”

“I’ll arrive a bit early to coordinate with the musicians. Are you responsible for the drums?”

“I’m a bridesmaid, and wearing a dress would be inconvenient. Don’t worry about this—they’re all professionals and won’t lower your standards.”

“Alright, I’ll be waiting for that meal you promised.”

With the matter settled, Cheng Wanyue hurried home without even finishing her coffee. Chi Yue had a friend nearby, so he stayed at the café to wait.

He found Cheng Wanyue’s Weibo account, which took some effort.

One day, while a group of friends was drinking at his bar, someone noticed him looking at Cheng Wanyue’s Weibo and jokingly asked if he was interested in her.

That day, he learned by chance that they had almost met at last year’s music festival. He had gone to the venue but had been injured during rehearsal and had gone to the hospital, missing her.

They could have met earlier.

The wedding was held at Xuanwu Lake. Chi Yue arrived very early on the morning of the 5th. Xuanwu Lake has several entrances, and he wandered around, unable to find the place. Cheng Wanyue was probably getting anxious waiting, so she asked him to share his location on WeChat so she could pick him up.

Xuanwu Lake was a park where locals came to stroll, but it was large and considered a scenic spot, with many tourists during the holiday.

Cheng Wanyue finally relaxed after finding Chi Yue. They chatted as they walked, and as they approached the wedding venue, she reminded him to put on his mask.

There was a breeze today, and many flower arrangements at the venue.

Chi Yue had monolids, and wearing a mask gave a very different impression than without one. Yang Huimin, watching from a distance, thought this young man looked fierce and not particularly reliable, but indeed seemed like someone Cheng Wanyue would like.

As they approached, Cheng Wanyue introduced Yang Huimin: “This is my mother.”

Chi Yue removed his hat to greet her. “Hello, Auntie. My name is Chi Yue.”

Yang Huimin smiled. “Hello, thank you for your trouble today.”

“No need to be so polite. It’s my pleasure,” Chi Yue helped Cheng Wanyue carry some things. “Auntie, please go ahead with your tasks. Wanyue and I will go over there to meet the musicians.”

Yang Huimin nodded, and after they walked away, she let out a long sigh, feeling quite uncomfortable inside.

Qing Hang headed straight to the venue after his plane landed. Cheng Wanyue couldn’t get away, so Yan Ci went to pick him up. The electronic screen was playing a video of Cheng Wanyue and Zhou Yu performing “Calabash Brothers” at an elementary school Children’s Day event, with Cheng Yanqing beside it nearly dying of laughter.

Despite the crowd, Qing Hang immediately spotted Cheng Wanyue. He had seen her in a bridesmaid dress before, but that night when she tried it on wasn’t as formal as today.

She turned around, saw him, and ran toward him, holding up her dress.

For a moment, Qing Hang mistakenly thought this was their wedding, and Cheng Wanyue was his bride.
